4 WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK INLET WORKS / HEADWORKS

1. INLET WORKS / HEADWORKS: ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS THE KEY TO OPTIMUM EFFICIENCY. It is crucial for the subsequent purification and recycling processes, that solids are efficiently separated from industrial or municipal wastewater. Therefore, Bilfinger Water Technologies provides machine solutions which can be ideally adapted to suit the respective requirements and conditions. Our machines for the further processing of extracted (recyclable) materials present a sound overall concept for the first stage when employed in combination with our rakes and screens, conveying systems and shut-off devices. The central task of the inlet works / headworks is the separation of coarse solids such as rocks, wood, foliage, sanitary products, toilet paper, etc. and also sand and grease. Reliable pre-treatment of the wastewater is crucial for all subsequent treatment processes. Blockages and obstructions are prevented in downstream biological and / or physical processes and the general strain on the plant is eased. 1. Inlet works / headworks: Coarse screening Fine screening Screenings treatment The optimal adjustment of screen gap widths and sieve hole diameters are of particular significance here. For a convincing screening result in municipal and industrial applications, these must be perfectly tuned to the respective medium, volume of flow and local installation conditions. Reliable conveying systems and shut-off devices ensure the intake / discharge and transport of water and substances. Sand treatment Primary and secondary clarification Bilfinger Water Technologies can deliver individual com ponents or develop complete solutions which are tailored to your specific needs. 6 COARSE SCREENING. Bilfinger Water Technologies supplies the entire range of coarse and fine screening systems. Bar screens with grab cleaner, climber screens and revolving chain screens have proved to be highly successful in coarse screening processes. As the first stage of the inlet works / headworks, coarse screens are employed to retain coarse solids and thus protect all further downstream treatment stages. The individual design of the bar rack enables a high cleaning performance and even coarse or bulky screenings, such as stones or wood, can be reliably removed. As the gap widths are designed in graduations, our coarse screens can also be utilised for fine screening. The coarse screen systems supplied by our top quality brands PASSAVANT, JOHNSON SCREENS, NOGGERATH and GEIGER are employed in the separation of heavy screenings upstream of pump stations and in the inlet areas of wastewater treatment plants. Our PASSAVANT Shut-Off Devices are also suitable here, for the adjustment of water volumes and the protection of the plant during overhauls. We offer you tailored solutions for a wide range of requirements and installation conditions. 1. 9 FINE SCREENING. Bilfinger Water Technologies is also renowned for continuous development in the field of fine screening. We aim to ensure a reliable, defined and targeted separation of fine substances such as fibres and floating matter, in order to optimise downstream processes and to protect the environment. After bulky screenings have been separated in the coarse screening stage, fine contaminants such as hair, fibres, sanitary articles or paper still remain in the wastewater. The narrow gap widths of fine screening rakes and sieves are excellently suited for the removal of such substances and the safeguarding of subsequent treatment phases. 1. Inlet works / headworks: Coarse screening In order to guarantee a reliable and efficient screening process, Bilfinger Water Technologies offers a broad portfolio of rakes and screens which are tailored to your individual requirements. PASSAVANT Shut-Off Devices ensure efficient adjustment of water volumes and reliable protection of installations during overhauls. Fine screening Screenings treatment Our machines can be optimally integrated into existing plants and lead to a significant stabilisation of the operational process. Operating companies benefit from a longer service life and a high level of availability due to low-maintenance and low-wear operation. 10 SCREENINGS TREATMENT. Efficient, ecological and responsible: Bilfinger Water Technologies develops effective and economic solutions for the environmentally-friendly disposal of screenings from municipal and industrial applications, both with and without substrate wash-out. The waste from coarse and fine screening processes, which poses hygienic concerns, must undergo further processing before disposal, due to its organic content and the build-up of odours. The soluble organic matter is washed out of the screenings by means of special washing systems. The screenings are subsequently dewatered in presses to decrease the water content and reduce the weight by up to 85 per cent. Apart from clearly positive aspects with regard to the environment, this leads to a substantial reduction in disposal costs. Moreover, a return of recycled waste from industrial applications into the materials cycle is often viable. 1. 13 SAND TREATMENT. Bilfinger Water Technologies sand separators and sand washers are utilised to reduce the water content, or respectively the organic content, in wastewater treatment processes and thus contribute to both cost effectiveness and the protection of the environment. The rise in waste disposal costs is forcing the operators of sewage networks, wastewater treatment plants and industrial enterprises to separate reusable materials from waste materials. Our compact and robustly constructed sand separators and sand washers, for the treatment of grit trap screenings and sewer deposits, offer the possibility to transform the septic waste of today into a hygienically safe commodity of tomorrow. These installations are characterised by a high degree of individuality, which is determined by the wide differences in the respective process media, catchment areas and recycling paths. The cleaning process is supported in the grit traps by additional aeration systems which stir up floating matter and prevent organics from settling. As aeration alone is not sufficient, sand washers are then utilized to wash out the organics and ensure the separation of the organic content. The result: lower investment and operating costs which lead to a perceptible reduction in disposal costs. Bilfinger Water Technologies also supplies combined and complete solutions which unite the entire inlet works / headworks in one system. 1. 14 PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CLARIFICATION. The aim of the primary and secondary clarification processes is to remove all floating and settleable solids, as far as possible, and to draw off clear water. Bilfinger Water Technologies develops robust, low wear scraper technologies for the removal of sediments in circular and longitudinal tanks, which are suitable for a wide range of installation conditions and requirements. Primary clarification is normally installed downstream of the grit removal and completes the inlet works / headworks. After biological processing, the water / sludge mixture is separated in the secondary treatment process. In order to separate the water from the solids, the wastewater is allowed to settle in sedimentation tanks so that the sludge is deposited on the tank bottom and the treated water can be drawn off via the launder channels. The sludge sediment is removed by means of scraper blades or suction pipes, whilst the floating matter is scraped from the surface of the water into an outlet channel. The scrapers move at a very low velocity, to avoid a renewed disturbance of the sediment from the bottom of the tank. 1. 16 SHUT-OFF DEVICES. Control and transport systems are a fundamental part of process-based wastewater treatment: products supplied by Bilfinger Water Technologies make a substantial contribution to the safeguarding of process reliability, from the regulation of water inlets and outlets, to the conveying of wastewater and waste material, to flood protection. PASSAVANT Shut-Off Devices play a central role in the management of flows of water / wastewater in drain and sewer systems: they enable a targeted regulation of water inlets and outlets, ensure the transport of water within municipal or industrial pipe, sewer and tank systems and offer reliable flood protection. PASSAVANT Shut-Off Devices are also employed in rain water retention systems, drain network shafts, reservoirs, dams and the cooling towers of power stations. Bilfinger Water Technologies can build on more than a hundred years of experience in the development and production of uncased shut-off devices. Strict quality standards guarantee a high level of safety and reliability, right down to the smallest detail. 1. 19 2. THE BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT: THE HEART OF THE MODERN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESS. The highly complex requirements of the biological treatment must be viewed as a whole, under varying environmental and framework conditions, assessed and then implemented. Bilfinger Water Technologies develops tailored concepts to satisfy your specific needs, which ensure stable degradation processes and comply your demands regarding resource and cost efficiency. After the inlet works / headworks, carbon and nitrogen compounds and phosphate remain dissolved in the wastewater and must be removed by means of biological processes. As these substances act as natural fertilizers, their disposal without further treatment would mean an over-fertilisation of bodies of water and have far-reaching consequences for the ecosystem. In order to remove these harmful substances, the wastewater undergoes a number of individual processes. The nitrification process requires an oxygen rich environment to enable carbon degradation and oxidation of ammonium to nitrate. In the subsequent denitrification phase, this nitrate is converted to nitrogen and thus removed from the water. The removal of phosphates is supported with an anaerobic environment in the Bio-P-Phase. The wastewater / activated sludge mixture is enriched with the necessary oxygen by means of aeration systems. The water / sludge mixture, formed in the biological treatment, flows into the downstream secondary settling tank where sedimentation occurs. After the sludge has been deposited, the clarified water flows into the receiving water course. Bilfinger Water Technologies has the benefit of many years of experience in the field of wastewater treatment and creates a wide range of concepts and technologies for the entire biological treatment of modern wastewater treatment processes: from aeration technology in the aeration tank, to process engineering optimisation measures, to scraper technology for circular and longitudinal tanks. 2. Biological treatment: Aeration technologies System solutions for energy and process efficiency BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK 19

AERATION TECHNOLOGIES. Aeration tanks and the respective aeration equipment are at the core of modern biological wastewater treatment plants. Modern wastewater technology calls for efficient aeration systems which ensure a high level of technical flexibility with maximum oxygen enrichment values. 2. Biological treatment: Aeration technologies System solutions for energy and process efficiency Biological treatment in the aeration tank is aided by microrganisms which absorb and process dissolved substances. Aeration systems play an important role hereby, as they create an oxygen rich environment and promote the mixing of the sludge and water. Bilfinger Water Technologies offers a wide range of efficient aeration systems for the effective introduction of oxygen into the activated sludge, which are designed to meet various challenges and to be utilised in different applications, according to your specific requirements. Our technologies are characterized by their constantly high level of oxygen enrichment, robust and resilient construction and application flexibility. The biological treatment is followed by the separation of the water / sludge mixture in the secondary clarification process. This final stage of the biological treatment aims to remove, as far as possible, all the floating and settleable solids and draw off clear water. In order to achieve high throughput rates and low turbulence levels, Bilfinger Water Technologies provides robust and almost turbulence-free scraper technologies for circular and longitudinal tanks which are also highly suitable for primary and intermediary clarification tanks. 20 WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT

SYSTEM SOLUTIONS FOR ENERGY AND PROCESS EFFICIENCY. The various partly counter-directional processes in wastewater treatment plants place heavy demands on technical implementation procedures. A comprehensive approach is, therefore, required to ensure efficiency in the implementation of optimisation measures. This is the only way to concurrently achieve the highest level of cleaning performance, stable degradation processes and minimal energy consumption. 2. Biological treatment: Aeration technologies System solutions for energy and process efficiency The efficiency of wastewater treatment plants is determined by optimal tuning of all prevailing conditions such as, for example, ph-values, concentrations of substances, the use of precipitants and the required energy input. We develop transparent and user-friendly systems to efficiently optimise and coordinate your specific treatment processes. Apart from the tailored oxygen input control for the aeration process, we supply a large number of additional modules (process water dosing, precipitant dosing, recirculation control, sludge age control, etc.) and also solutions for pond treatment plants. Our systems run with high operational reliability, have flexible measuring technology and achieve optimal process results with low energy consumption and reduced operating costs. Therefore, climate-damaging CO 2 emissions can also be reduced. Hundreds of wastewater treatment plants are already profiting from our holistic approach to the optimisation of their processes. Our portfolio includes: INTECH Process Efficiency AQUALOGIC and ENERLOGIC : Load dependent aeration control and further important processes relating to biological treatment e.g. precipitant dosing, recirculation, sludge age control, etc. INTECH Process Efficiency AQUALOGIC LAGO : Modification concept for the improvement of performance in pond treatment plants INTECH Process Efficiency TSM-MODUL : Mixing system to improve efficiency in use of precipitants BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK 23

3. SLUDGE TREATMENT: ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY DISPOSAL AND EXTRACTION OF RAW MATERIALS. Increasing demands on the quality of wastewater, growing concerns regarding the disposal methods used to date, and the need to retrieve raw materials from wastewater currently provide the framework for the planning of sustainable treatment technologies. In the primary clarification stage, sewage sludge accrues when organic substances are degraded. This has to be purified, recycled or disposed of but there are currently no competent standard procedures for further processing. In some counties the disposal of sewage sludge is carried out at landfills, for example, whilst in others some of the sludge is used as a biological fertiliser in agriculture. As an unrestricted disposal of sludge is no longer possible at every location and the pollution levels of the fertilizer are a cause for environmental concern, the demand for efficient and sustainable concepts for sludge treatment is increasing. Regardless of subsequent disposal methods, it is advisable, from an economic point of view, to prepare the sludge for downstream processes. Separation procedures, in which solids are removed from the water phase, play a central role. Sludge treatment is necessary to reduce the volume and mass of sludge which accrues in the wastewater clarification process and to improve the possibilities for further utilisation. The effectiveness of the separation process has a decisive influence on the volume of sludge to be transported and disposed of. With these aspects in mind, Bilfinger Water Technologies develops a wide range of systems and machines for sludge thickening and dewatering processes. 3. Sludge treatment: Sludge thickening Sludge dewatering 24 WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK SLUDGE TREATMENT

SLUDGE TREATMENT WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK 25

SLUDGE THICKENING. Sewage sludge is continuously produced in the course of wastewater clarification processes, which is either utilized in further processing or disposed of. A rapid concentration of the solids and a reduction of the sludge volume are the basis for the efficient treatment and disposal of wastewater sludge in downstream processes. 3. Sludge treatment: Sludge thickening Sludge dewatering The quantity of primary and surplus sludge is reduced as a result of sludge thickening procedures and disposal costs are, therefore, lowered. Special stirring and scraping mechanisms reduce the water content of the sludge in the sludge thickening tank and enable a continuous removal of still pumpable, free-flowing sludge into a collection hopper. Mechanical thickeners are used when rapid thickening is required for sludge which cannot be stabilised. These are suitable for both high and low throughput volumes and enable a high thickening concentration, in an economic process with low polymer consumption. With its PASSAVANT gravity thickeners and the PASSAVANT Belt Thickener FluX-Drain, Bilfinger Water Technologies offers particularly economic solutions for your specific application requirements. In addition to the planning and installation of entire fully operational sludge thickening plants, it is possible to easily integrate our systems into existing structures. 26 WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK SLUDGE TREATMENT

SLUDGE DEWATERING. Dewatering is one of the most important processes in the entire water treatment procedure. As the burning of sewage sludge, or its disposal at a landfill site, both involve costs, sludge dewatering pays off, particularly when several tons accrue each day. 3. Sludge treatment: Sludge thickening Sludge dewatering After the sludge has been stabilised and thickened, as far possible, it still retains a fluid consistency. The mechanical sludge dewatering process then enables the separation / removal of a portion of the sludge water and thus reduces the total volume. Flocculating agents are added, which effect a separation of the water from the sludge as a result of different electric charges. Sewage sludge can be used in agriculture, in so far as it complies with statutory sewage sludge regulations. The disposal methods are either burning or landfill sites, depending on the local framework conditions. Bilfinger Water Technologies, with its PASSAVANT and JOHNSON SCREENS brands, provides economic sludge dewatering processes which achieve optimal results with low polymer consumption. The technical procedure involves the separation of water in a continuous process with a combination of separation by gravity and by pressure. Mechanical dewatering is always recommended when there is a demand for economically viable volume and weight reduction, with a maximum possible solids concentration, combined with an optimal yield of clarified water. Our machines are universally adaptable and are, therefore, amongst the most utilized sludge dewatering machines worldwide. SLUDGE TREATMENT WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK 29

4. FINE AND MICRO-SIEVING / SCREENING THE FINAL STEP TOWARDS CLEAN WATER. Micro-sieving / screening is the last stage in the water intake procedure and plays a particularly important role as downstream installations such as pumps and capacitors must be reliably protected against breakdowns. Solids and / or contaminants are separated from the liquid phase and removed for disposal or recycling. With its rotary drums, micro screens and underdrain systems for gravity filters, Bilfinger Water Technologies offers effective and economic solutions for water purification, wastewater treatment and the processing of recyclable material. Fine and micro-sieving / screening is based on mechanical processes. Various screening technologies form the basis for the separation of liquids and solids and are decisive to the success of practical applications. Screening is carried out either statically or dynamically, whereby both processes can be effected in a continuous or discontinuous mode. Rotary drum, micro and underdrain screens are employed for fine and micro-sieving / screening in gravity filter systems. Micro screen systems with rotating drums are an effective and cost effective alternative to conventional rakes and screens in municipal wastewater technology applications. Our underdrain screening components are suitable for use in the purification of drinking or process water and also as a third clarification stage or for complex filtration applications. 4. 32 ROTARY DRUM AND SIEVE SYSTEMS. Rotary drum screens separate, filter and sieve floating matter and particles from liquids, process water and wastewater. Each rotary drum screen is specifically designed for the respective application. A differentiation is, therefore, made between screen types which are loaded internally or externally. When ultra fine particles have to be filtered out of flows of water and wastewater, micro-sieving / screening technologies come into play. 4. Fine and micro-sieving / screening: Rotary drum and sieve systems Underdrain screening systems Bilfinger Water Technologies has a broad portfolio of internally and externally loaded rotary drum and micro screen systems, which have been successfully employed for many years in the separation of solids and liquids in municipal wastewater treatment plants and for the treatment of industrial process water. The heart of the internally loaded screen design is a robust rotating screen drum in which the solids are retained, carefully dewatered and then discharged from the system. Externally loaded rotary drums are particularly suitable for floating, greasy and sticky solids which can be reliably separated via the surface of the rotary drum screen. Micro screen rotary drum systems are an effective and economic alternative to conventional screening systems in municipal wastewater treatment plants and are excellently suited to the treatment of surface water. Micro screen rotary drum systems can be used in a wide range of applications as they offer the possibility to utilise diverse meshes made of a wide variety of materials. Our micro screens can reliably filter out the finest particles from flows of water and wastewater with a convincingly high separation performance and low cost in continuous operation. 32 WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK FINE AND MICRO-SIEVING / SCREENING

UNDERDRAIN SCREENING. Bilfinger Water Technologies offers underdrain screening systems for filter installations as an optimal and cost-effective solution for the filtration of water, wastewater and process water, in order to improve wastewater collection and provide an optimal distribution of air and water in the backwash tank. 4. Fine and micro-sieving / screening: Rotary drum and sieve systems Underdrain screening systems JOHNSON SCREENS TRITON UNDERDRAINS are a drainage system offering the optimal solution for both new installations and filter refurbishment, which is employed as an alternative to the conventional filter nozzle bottom in wastewater treatment plants. These systems are mainly installed in open filter tanks but special applications are also possible in closed pressure filters. The system guarantees optimal collection and distribution of filtered wastewater with a direct retention of the filtered material. The main advantages of the JOHNSON SCREENS TRITON UNDERDRAINS are their low construction height and variable gap widths of up to mm. The gap can be adjusted to suit the filter material and supporting layers are, therefore, no longer necessary. The TRITON UNDERDRAINS are available in stainless steel and PVC and guarantee a high level of strength and durability with maximum open surface area. They thus offer you the opportunity to optimise the efficiency of your treatment plants. FINE AND MICRO-SIEVING / SCREENING WE MAKE WATER TREATMENT WORK 35
