3 Eczema: The secrets your GP won t tell you Eight million people in the UK have some form of skin disease such as eczema and this number grows every day. These skin diseases are the reason behind the majority of the UK s GP visits, according to the British Skin Foundation. Eczema can affect both adults and children one in every five children and one in every 12 adults suffers with eczema. Regardless of age, the symptoms remain the same. The skin is: Itchy Red Dry Scaly Inflamed Cracked Sore The majority of doctors also prescribe an emollient and steroid system to help people manage their condition on a daily basis. What aren t the doctors telling you about steroid creams? Steroid creams only reduce the symptoms they don t fix the underlying cause. This means that when you come to the end of a course of treatment, any improvement you may have seen in your skin could disappear. Prolonged use of steroid creams can cause the skin to thin. This in turn makes it more susceptible to cracking which is, as we all know, one of the symptoms of eczema that sufferers are trying to eliminate. It can also lead to skin atrophy, rosacea, and the inhibition of melanocyte activity. 3

4 Research has shown that 56% of patients react badly to the petrochemicalbased products that are prescribed. As eczema-prone skin is already in an incredibly sensitive state, the prolonged use of chemical products will only exacerbate the situation resulting in frustration and despair for patients. A study undertaken by Birmingham Children s Hospital found that over half of the prescriptions given to children for their eczema resulted in an allergic reaction. This means that children who already had skin allergies were being prescribed products that were actually doing more harm than good. How do doctors decide on treatment? Sadly, this is done on a trial and error basis. When it comes to choosing which specific products are to be used, along with the strength of each product, doctors have to make judgement calls which means they might not always get it right. As a result of this practice, patients can find themselves having to try a number of combinations that don t work, before they find the one that does. Perhaps then, it s no surprise that the National Association of Primary Care Review (Summer 2008) found that 66% patients assessed the effectiveness of conventional NHS treatments as poor or very poor. What alternatives are there? It s worth trying to identify some of the things that trigger an eczema flare up. Typically these are: Skincare and detergents Diet and food Environmental factors Stress It makes sense to try to avoid products that contain detergents, soaps, and perfumes as these can cause flare ups. Foods such as dairy, wheat, fruits, and nuts are another common cause of flare ups so try to avoid these for a few days to see if there s any improvement in your condition. You can then reintroduce the foods into your diet and work out which ones trigger a flare up. Many eczema sufferers also find that their eczema is made worse by factors in their environment such as pet hair, dust, and even the 4

5 temperature inside their home. If you too get affected by such things, try to wear cotton clothes and use natural products wherever possible.
