1 216 S. Pleasantburg Drive Greenville, SC Buck Mickel Center CNC Machine Operator Class Greenville Technical College CCD (Career and Corporate Development) has structured its CNC Machine Operator class to teach the valuable and desirable skills sought by local industry. One of its goals is to raise skilled labor levels available throughout the county and state of South Carolina. The CNC Machine Operator class consists of 150 contact hours (4 modules) plus completion of 144 hours of online Immersive Software courses outside of class. Inside this packet you ll find more information about the class, expected completion rates, opportunities for employment and further education, and flyers with class dates and the virtual training environment. Modules Covered During Class During class, we cover 4 modules: 1. CNC Math 48 hours 2. Basic Measuring Tools, Safety Awareness, Quality Assurance, Production and Processes 16 hours 3. Print Reading Manufacturing/Mechanical Drawings 32 hours 4. Intro to CNC Lathe & CNC Mill Operations 54 hours Immersive Software & Immerse2Learn.com Outside of Class Immersive Software simulates the machine and the CNC controller. Students complete the Immerse2Learn online courses and tests outside of the classroom, over the internet. At a minimum, students should expect to spend at least 144 hours to complete Immersive Software. The online courses include learning modules, quizzes and a pretest that students work through before taking tests/exams. They can listen, read and watch, then work the modules on the computer. Students may review modules as often as they d like until they master the material. Students are required to score an 80 or above on all tests and exams. If they score below an 80, the test/exam will be reset and they will need to re take it until they pass with an 80 or above. What Students Learn We met with 12 companies in Greenville County. They told us they wanted to have a class which would produce a student who could: read a print, upload a program, preset the tools, run the program, measure the part and make offset to first piece the part out with 100% conformance on dimensions and tolerances. While we are not teaching a programming class, students do write and run a program for the CNC Mill and Lathe: CNC Mill Program: Students will write and run a program, which includes profile, pockets, drill holes for a bolt hole pattern, holes on an angular line and holes on different position on the print.

2 216 S. Pleasantburg Drive Greenville, SC Buck Mickel Center CNC Lathe Program: Students will write and run a program for a step shaft that has an undercut, threads, drilled and bored hole. Completer Students = Prepared Trainee Please remember that students spend 150 hours in class this would equal to or less than 4 weeks full time in the workplace. We regard completer students as trainees. Consider what you would expect of a new employee that has had 4 weeks of on the job training working at your company. What do you expect them to know? We believe that if our student meets or exceeds this expectation, then we are doing our job. What will we know after the student finishes the class? He or she will know if this is a career they are interested in. We and the students will know whether they have the technical ability to learn and perform this type of skilled job. Completer students will be prepared for further training at your facility. Goals After Completing the Class Please remember that the class represents about 4 weeks on the job. These are not highly skilled students, but you can consider them as pre screened for the potential and ability to learn and grow. Completing the CNC Machine Operator training is just the first step before they continue further education and on the job training. Employment Our goal is that any company looking for apprentices, CNC operators, or QC technicians would bring completer students in at an entry level. Companies/Staffing Agencies could use this program as a screening tool for finding potential skilled labor. We anticipate that companies or staffing agencies would perform thorough background checks and drug screenings as well as complete an interview process to decide whether the student is a good fit for their team. Our feeling and goal is that we will show a better placement rate and retention rate than any staffing agency, two year institution, or four year institution when these procedures are established and maintained. Further Education We encourage the student to go further and pursue an associate degree in Machine Tool Technology or Engineering while employed at your facility. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions about the CNC Machine Operator Program at Greenville Tech. In closing, we believe we have created a program that will produce fantastic future employees for your company, and others. We will monitor and adjust the program to continually help the student succeed but, ultimately, it is up to the student to meet that expectation. From Day One, we will communicate expectations to the student. If they do not meet these expectations, they will not complete the program. We cannot and will not recommend any student who cannot complete the program. We are trying to increase the skilled workforce in the county and state. This is the first of many steps to train and put the people to work. Thanks, Scotty Nicholson [email protected] (864)

3 The CNC Machine Operator program is divided into two parts or phases. Phase I consists of four in class modules. Phase II consists of 144 online course hours.
