In dialogue sessions participants will get to know each other, explore the present state of Humanist 1
2 Closing Drinks T Thursday 19th November Chaplaincy in each others countries, and reflect on what they expect of the upcoming symposium Workshop 2 - Methodology, Skills and Competences by Carmen Schuhmann and Guest Professor Jan Hein Mooren and Student Annelieke Damen Lunch Break We start this workshop with the introduction of a theoretical framework for understanding humanist chaplaincy. In general, humanist chaplains work with people who feel disoriented in life or search for new, more inspired ways of living. We theorize humanist chaplaincy as a practice of supporting people in their attempts to (re- )orient themselves in life. In a humanist perspective, there is no given vision of the good life that may function as a universal orienting system in people's lives. People need to find their own, unique way towards a good life at the least a liveable life, at best an inspired and full life. We explore what this implies for methods, competences and skills of humanist chaplains. In particular, we address the role of chaplains' own orientation in life their values, sources of inspiration and visions of the good - in humanist chaplaincy Workshop 3 - Rituals and Ceremonies by Joanna Wojtkowiak and Guest Chaplain Neanske Tuinman Informal Dinner In this lecture and workshop we will explore the different meanings and expressions of rituals. While traditional rituals have been decreasing in secular society, new ritualizations are emerging, especially in moments of existential concerns. What is a ritual and what elements does it consist of? How can ritual be used in the context of existential counseling? A guest celebrant will demonstrate the power of ritual Workshop 4 - Chaplaincy in Belgium by Freddy Boeykens. In this workshop we will explore the ins and outs of Humanist Chaplaincy in Belgium and what services demens.nu, its member organizations and its centers (called huisvandemens) offer: ceremonies, counseling, community building and information. 2
3 Friday 20th November Workshop 5 - The Humanist Chaplain within Organizations by Carmen Schuhmann and Guest Chaplain Leentje den Boer Lunch Break This session focuses on the special role of humanist chaplains in the organization. On the one hand, humanist chaplains have a critical role to play in organizations. They address situations where the humanity of people tends to disappear behind fixed organizational images and stereotypes. In particular, it is the task of the humanist chaplain to promote agency and resilience of individuals in the organization. On the other hand, humanist chaplains have a constructive role in organizations, as they need to take the well- being of all people in the organization into account. In particular, humanist chaplains have, at the meso- level, the task of creating dialogical spaces. Here they may facilitate dialogue between the many different and sometimes conflicting - voices within an organization Workshop 6 - Humanist Chaplaincy and the challenges of the 21rst Century by Caroline Suransky. Processes of globalisation have a profound effect on the social context in which Humanist chaplains work in the Netherlands and indeed throughout Europe. Societies become increasingly culturally diverse and new problems and possibilities appear in people s daily lives. Just to name a few: think of issues related to freedom of expression and/or the right to insult and the case of Charlie Hebdo, think of the many Syrian refugees and their war traumas which they carry with them as they become part of the social fabric of European communities, think of how seriously worried many people are about consumerism, the use of fossil fuels and climate change. Living and working in such complex plural realities requires Humanist Chaplains to critically reflect on their own world view and how they can professionally contribute to help people live a meaningful life in a just society. Being a Humanist Chaplain in the 21rst century means focusing on important new ethical and existential questions which arise amidst social change. TEKST In this workshop, we will explore what this could mean for chaplains who work in the fields of Care, the Justice system and the Defence Force, but also in newly emerging fields beyond the traditional institutional frameworks. These include terrains of policies and practices of e.g. (social) media and (local) initiatives in sustainable development, but also in diverse other fields in which a fast growing number of self- employed Humanist professionals try to create opportunities. Saturday 21th November Field Trips 9.15 Bus departure Workshop 7 - A secular approach to spiritual care in Utrecht University Medical Center by Willem Blokland at the department of spiritual care, Utrecht University Medical Center. 3
4 Lunch Break 13:00 14:00 Transfer by bus How do we as chaplains (Humanist, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist) work in our hospital? Why do we work in the way we do? How do we bring the existential domain into the open in different ways for patients, doctors and nurses? Workshop 8 - Counseling in the Dutch Armed Forces by Norbert de Kooter and colleague Humanist Chaplains of the Dutch Armed Forces at Military Training Centre Beukbergen in Huis ter Heide. In Beukbergen our hosts will give an insight in their work and learn us about missions and counselling in specific army situations. Special attention is being payed to organizational developments and strategic considerations regarding humanist chaplaincy in a military organization. Their contributions will be followed by a conversation between participants Dinner At: Beukbergen with our hosts Arrival in Utrecht TEKS Sunday 22th November Workshop 9 - Through a Narrative Lens by Ada van Arnhem and Reine Rek Closing remarks by Wilma Reinders In this last workshop we explore the lessons learned during the symposium. What knowledge and experiences are useful and how do you want to apply those back home? Via a narrative approach we reflect on questions like how do you want to present yourself as a Humanist Chaplain? or how to present the Humanist Chaplain to organizations or to your society? Wrapping up of the conference and Goodbye T 4
