1 DEREE COLLEGE SYLLABUS FOR: PS 4154 INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY- LEVEL 6 3/0/3 (REVISED SPRING 2015) UK CREDITS: 15 PREREQUISITES: PS 3012 Theories of Personality-Level 5 CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the field of counseling psychology. The course utilizes a scientist/practitioner approach to familiarize students with the assumptions, theories, strategies, applications, and ethical and legal considerations related to counseling psychology. This course is not designed to teach students how to conduct psychotherapy. RATIONALE: Students will be introduced to the basic counseling theories, the core requirements and socio-cultural competencies necessary to becoming a counseling psychologist. Emphasis will be placed on the various employment opportunities and settings in the field, the roles and functions of counseling psychologist in these settings. A key component of the course is that students are self reflective and challenge themselves to think critically about theory, research, and practice. This course is intended for graduating psychology majors who are particularly interested in pursuing graduate studies in counseling psychology and related fields. LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand historical evolution and the current position of counseling psychology within the psychology discipline, particularly the philosophical and professional distinctions between counseling psychology and other mental health professions. 2. Identify roles, functions, preparation standards, credentialing, and licensure of counseling psychology. Have a working knowledge of the BPS and APA code of ethics and standards of practice, of ethical decision-making processes, and of basic legal guidelines in the field. 3. Demonstrate detailed knowledge of counseling theories, particularly of the core approaches to counseling: psychodynamic, existential-humanistic, behavioral, cognitive, integrative approaches. 4. Critically evaluate counseling psychology research, including process and outcome research. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of key issues and major topics in counselling psychology, such as but not limited to reflective practice, therapeutic relationship, personal therapy, supervision, and professional boundaries. 6. Develop an in-depth knowledge of diversity issues, including worldview, race/ethnicity, gender, social class, spirituality, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental status, and equity issues in counseling. 7. Gain an understanding of the settings where counseling psychologists work and how the context affects their work. METHODS OF
2 TEACHING AND LEARNING: Lectures, class experiential activities, group discussions, a portfolio and a term paper. ASSESSMENT: Formative Assessment 0% Video class discussions and reflections Portfolio-Summative 60% The Portfolio assessment includes two types of assignments: Personal Beliefs Statement (1500 words). This statement outlines students' motivations for choosing the counseling psychology field. Self-Reflection Papers on different topics presented in class. Critical Review Paper- Summative 40% Students will write a critical review paper of the empirical evidence on one of the following topics: Personal Therapy, Online Counseling, Mandated Counseling. As these topics are still debates in counseling psychology students will need to draw their conclusions based on existing empirical evidence (2,500-3,000 words). Formative assessments enrich students' learning experiences Portfolio assesses the Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 6, 7.
