OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital Five years of innovation, growth and quality care

Message from the President Bruce P. Hagen When Dublin Methodist Hospital opened its doors in January 2008, it marked an important milestone for OhioHealth as well as for healthcare in central Ohio and beyond. With the support of the Dublin community, we were able to create the first hospital in the nation to integrate totally digital, wireless technology with evidence-based architecture to create a unique high tech, high touch healing environment. The welcome we received from community leaders and the people of Dublin, from the very beginning of our planning efforts in 2004, was integral to that success. Five years later, we continue to grow and expand and our partnership with the Dublin community is more important than ever. We have expanded our surgical services; added radiation oncology and breast health services; and enhanced cardiac care with a Heart Failure Clinic. Already this year, we ve opened a new Heart and Vascular diagnostic catheterization lab and launched construction for an expanded maternity care unit. Within the Dublin community, we are playing a vital role in supporting development of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. We also are proud to support important initiatives such as Healthy Dublin, Project SEARCH, the Dublin Irish Festival, the Memorial Tournament, the Dublin Foundation Emerald Celebration and more. And we re just getting started. Our campus was designed for growth. As a system, we are always looking for new ways OhioHealth can better serve Dublin residents close to where they live, and we re already making plans for what comes next. Financially, we are ahead of our projections and have met or exceeded all targets since We ensure affordable care for the community through continual expense management and focus on operational efficiency. As a result, we are among the lowest-cost hospitals in central Ohio, and our internal performance metrics show we effectively balance quality and service with a positive work-life balance for our associates. On behalf of all our physicians, associates and volunteers, I want to thank you for your support. We look forward to continued growth and innovation to better serve our community in the years ahead. 3 Dublin Methodist Hospital Innovative Design, Centered on the Patient After five years of growth and evolution, Dublin Methodist remains true to the original vision of a new kind of hospital centered on the patient. While hospitals have traditionally been designed around the needs of doctors, nurses and administrators, when Cheryl Herbert joined as Dublin Methodist s first president, she had a different idea. Her goal was to transform a former farm field into a hospital featuring an innovative, healing environment designed from the ground up with patient needs as the primary concern. The results of that planning process are evident today as soon as a visitor enters Dublin Methodist s lobby. Nature is a powerful healing force; a two-and-a-half story waterfall and live trees set the tone. Interior courtyards allow natural light to reach nearly 90 percent of all spaces. Thirteen gardens are situated in quiet courtyards and rooftop settings where patients and loved ones can enjoy nature, meditate and talk. Reflecting OhioHealth s mission, faith is a major component of the hospital s design, which includes a chapel to accommodate the needs of all religions. Our vision was to build a hospital that embraced patients, their loved ones and everyone involved in helping patients get well, said Cheryl Herbert, President, dublin methodist from That meant creating a unique environment for the people who give that care physicians, nurses, lab techs, pharmacists and more. We want patients and families to feel as comfortable during their stay as they do in their own home, said Herbert. Patients stay in private rooms, which studies show reduce stress, improve infection control and enhance confidentiality. The rooms are large to provide ample space for visitors and caregivers and include comfortable sleeping couches. Loved ones may come and go without restrictive visiting hours. To ensure privacy, patients remain out of public spaces any time they must be in gowns. Growing Employment 2008: 2012: To create the ideal culture, the nursing staff was carefully chosen from a long list of applicants. Working at Dublin Methodist meant they were the chosen ones, said Herbert. We emphasized 507 Employees 656 Employees that we really were a family because everyone was working together for so long and doing so many things to ensure an excellent patient experience from the first day. The culture is further enhanced through a strong volunteer base. Dublin Methodist is the only OhioHealth hospital with a waiting list of community members ready to volunteer. 3

Community Support Critical to Success The local community was also key in planning Dublin Methodist. Four years before the doors opened, the management team was in regular contact with community leaders and civic groups about the vision for Dublin Methodist and what it would offer. From the earliest outreach, city leaders recognized the benefits of having a hospital located in Dublin it would bring jobs as well as attract residents and businesses to the community. The Dublin community was very welcoming to us, said Cheryl Herbert, President, dublin methodist from Top city officials told us having this kind of healthcare facility would in essence complete the community and help attract new businesses and residents. We chose to be part of Dublin because they wanted us here and gave us so much support and that support continues today. 4 OhioHealth dublin Methodist HOSPITAL Five years of innovation, growth and quality care

Dublin Methodist Hospital Garnering Attention from Around the World The new facility drew a positive response from patients and families as well as the local community and beyond. In the first year, Dublin Methodist hosted more than 150 tours for hospital leaders from across the country and around the world. This wider recognition resulted from Dublin Methodist s participation in the Pebble Project, a joint research project between the Center for Health Design and healthcare systems dedicated to improving the environment in hospitals. As part of this small, select group of hospitals, Dublin Methodist was able to convert hard medical evidence into a healing environment. At the time, Dublin Methodist was better known nationally than it is locally, said Herbert. We were one of the first hospitals to put the whole package together building design, culture and technology and people wanted to see how it worked so they could adapt the ideas for their organizations. The response from patients was especially gratifying. In its first full year of operation, Dublin Methodist received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades, a national healthcare ratings organization. The award placed Dublin Methodist in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationally and was one of only 10 hospitals in Ohio to achieve the designation. Being ranked among the best is a reflection of our quality of care, said Bruce Hagen, current president, dublin methodist hospital and grady memorial hospital. While we re a small community hospital, we deliver pioneering treatments for our patients and an exceptional level of service that is uncommon among hospitals of our size. Receiving this honor verified that our caregivers and physicians have developed a truly special hospital that ensures each patient has an outstanding experience, said Bruce Hagen, who in 2010 succeeded Herbert as president. Hagen joined Dublin Methodist after serving as president of OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, bringing with him more than 30 years of healthcare experience. 5

This designation is the most competitive national hospital quality award in the country, recognizing hospitals that deliver the highest quality care by preventing medical errors, reducing mortality for high-risk procedures and reducing hospital readmissions for patients being treated for conditions like pneumonia and heart attack. Most Wired Hospital Every year since its opening, Dublin Methodist has been recognized as a leader in using technology to improve patient care, safety and satisfaction by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 from Healthgrades, a leader in helping consumers make informed choices about America s healthcare providers. Midas + Platinum Quality Award Recognized among the top five percent of hospitals on key measures of quality care in

Expanding Capabilities to Serve the Community Over the past five years, Dublin Methodist has never stopped growing to better serve the community. Surgery By offering an outpatient-like experience for inpatient procedures, Dublin Methodist has become a popular destination when surgery is required. Based on a strong response from the community, two operating rooms were added in 2009, for a total of six operating rooms, opening the way for dramatic surgical growth. Spine surgery was added in 2009, and since, Dublin Methodist has solidified its leadership position in the care and treatment of spinal conditions ranging from fractures and spine injuries, to scoliosis and osteoporosis to herniated disks. Our orthopedic surgeons work closely with our neurosurgeons, physiatrists and pain management team to provide comprehensive, individualized care. The following year Dublin Methodist, in partnership with foot and ankle physicians, created The Foot and Ankle Center of Excellence. Today foot and ankle surgery is one of the highest volume specialties at Dublin Methodist, and some of the country s top orthopedic surgeons are practicing here. In fact, an orthopedic surgical team at Dublin Methodist performed the world s first Prophecy Total Ankle Replacement by using the newest TAR technology, a computer program designed to help the surgeon map out the exact surgical plan before the patient even arrives at the hospital. This technology reduces time in the operating room, allows for a safer procedure and helps improve the surgeon s accuracy on implant placement all leading to better outcomes for the patient. In addition to foot and ankle and spine procedures, Dublin Methodist provides surgical expertise in general surgery, endoscopy, ENT, gynecology and urology with more surgical innovations to come. As part of patient-centered care, Dublin Methodist has improved efficiency while expanding services, as reflected in reduced time between cases and high ratings for on-time starts. Reflecting Dublin Methodist s growing national reputation, video technology was added to one operating room to allow broadcast of surgeries across the country to support medical education. The Breast Health Center offers patients privacy, comfort and support of dedicated Breast Health Nurse Navigators who guide patients through treatment and provide connections as needed to breast surgeons at Dublin Methodist. Mammograms Increase Nearly 7% Since 2009 Radiation Oncology For patients being treated for cancer, sometimes daily radiation treatments are part of the therapy. Having a convenient location with the latest treatment options is just what patients need during their treatment. Riverside Methodist Radiation Oncology at Dublin Methodist Hospital opened in 2011, offering the latest and most effective treatments for all stages and types of cancer, including a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The Dublin Methodist program is an extension of the program based at Riverside Methodist Hospital with access to the same physician expertise, staff and leadership team. The expanded breast health services met a growing demand, reflecting in growth to approximately 9,000 mammograms in : 8, : 8, : 8, : 8,958 Heart and Vascular OhioHealth physicians provide some of the areas best heart and vascular care at Dublin Methodist, supported by a diverse team that includes nursing, pharmacy, dietetics, health education, home health, social services and cardiac rehabilitation. Comprehensive cardiovascular inpatient and outpatient services, utilizing physician expertise from Riverside Methodist and OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, include advanced cardiac imaging and testing, heart disease prevention and management and a Heart Failure Clinic that opened in May To further enhance services, a Heart and Vascular diagnostic catheterization lab opened in February

Imaging Dublin Methodist offers diagnostic and therapeutic inpatient and outpatient imaging services including CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, digital radiography and fluoroscopy, ultrasound, bone density and digital mammography. We also offer Interventional Radiology (IR) and have plans to relocate IR to a new Heart and Vascular diagnostic catheterization lab in 2013 so that services are located in one convenient setting for patients. IR procedures include both diagnostics and injection treatments. Emergency Care Like the rest of the hospital, the Emergency Department is designed to ensure a quiet, comfortable experience that promotes a speedy recovery. As the only Emergency Department in the community, Dublin Methodist plays an important role in access to care and provides an entry point to the entire OhioHealth system if needed. Emergency Visits Increase 36% 2009: 24, : 29, : 31, : 33,613 Sports Medicine The OhioHealth Sports Medicine Center opened in December 2012 with a focus on helping injured athletes and active adults get back into the game more quickly and efficiently than ever. Located at the former Dublin Health Center facility, the OhioHealth Sports Medicine Center provides fellowship trained sports medicine physicians, rehabilitation and imaging at a single location for patients who would otherwise need to travel to multiple sites for different phases of care. 10 OhioHealth dublin Methodist HOSPITAL Five years of innovation, growth and quality care

Dublin Methodist Hospital Women s Health The first baby a boy was born just after the January 2008 opening, and the pace has accelerated over the past five years as more than 5,500 babies have been born at Dublin Methodist. In 2012, we set a record for the number of babies delivered at Dublin Methodist, and we re just getting started. Construction began in January 2013 to add an additional seven post-partum rooms and expand the Level II Nationwide Children s Hospital Special Care Nursery. 46% Increase in Deliveries One Baby at a Time Dublin Methodist is a popular choice for expectant mothers for many reasons. The hospital devotes 34 rooms to new mothers and their babies. Each of the nine birthing suites is private, spa-like and has a large family area and a full-size sleeper sofa for the mother s support person. Two C-section rooms are also available if needed. The labor and delivery team includes board-certified obstetricians, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists and neonatologists, along with certified lactation consultants. In addition, certified nurse midwives collaborate with physicians and may be involved with your initial assessment or as labor progresses. 2009: 1, : 1, : 1, : 1,689 11

Excelling in All Success Measures OhioHealth implemented a balanced scorecard approach for each of its hospitals to measure success in four key areas: quality, service, finance and worklife and Dublin Methodist is proud to be among the system s top performing hospitals. Recognized for Quality Dublin Methodist has been nationally recognized for quality care and patient safety from leading industry analysts, thought leaders and publications. We continue to implement new programs and seek new opportunities to maintain top quartile performance. Committed to Service Our patient centered design provides the foundation for exceptional care, and the hospital s annual Press Ganey customer service scores further demonstrate commitment to service. Patients randomly receive a survey called the Hospital Customer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) from Press Ganey to rate how well the hospital performed against several indicators including quiet, cleanliness and responsiveness. Dedicated to Worklife Balance OhioHealth strives to provide a positive worklife balance including competitive compensation, career and diversity training, flexible scheduling, recognition opportunities and special events and discounts. This coupled with the positive and collaborative work environment between physicians and associates at Dublin Methodist is among the many reasons OhioHealth has been named to FORTUNE magazine s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the past seven years. OhioHealth also surveys its physicians each year using a survey tool from Press Ganey. OhioHealth has ranked first or second among health systems nationally, and Dublin Methodist consistently boasts high scores for physician satisfaction. Financially Responsible We are proud of our financial strength, are ahead of projections and have met or exceeded all targets since Because of continual expense management and a focus on operational efficiency, Dublin Methodist is among the lowestcost central Ohio hospitals. 12 OhioHealth dublin Methodist HOSPITAL Five years of innovation, growth and quality care

Dublin Methodist Hospital Leveraging the Strengths of the OhioHealth System Dublin Methodist was designed as much more than a standalone hospital it is part of the broader OhioHealth system, which enhances the resources and range of treatment options available to patients. This system approach allows Dublin Methodist to operate specially monitored eicu intensive care beds linking to intensive care experts at Riverside Methodist to enhance the safety for critically ill patients. The Radiation Oncology unit opened in 2011, is a direct extension of the program based at Riverside Methodist, with the same physicians and staff. In addition, the Dublin Methodist medical team is part of the OhioHealth Stroke Network the first of its kind in Ohio. Following a stroke, every second counts and immediate, expert intervention is essential to preserving brain function and preventing disability. Through the OhioHealth Stroke Network, physicians at community-based hospitals, like Dublin Methodist, use advanced telemedicine technology to quickly connect to critical care and stroke specialists at OhioHealth hospitals. Geographic barriers are removed and doctors collaborate in real time to make crucial diagnostic decisions as if they were in the same room. Whenever possible, patients remain in their local hospital. If necessary, patients can be transferred to our Comprehensive Stroke Center at Riverside Methodist or our Primary Stroke Center at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. To enhance service for referring physicians and their patients, Dublin Methodist s participation in the OhioHealth Transfer Center streamlines patient transfers and bed management among OhioHealth s five central Ohio hospitals. The Transfer Center helps ensure patients can be transferred when necessary to OhioHealth facilities where accepting physicians are available, thus maximizing resources and improving efficiency. The Dublin Methodist campus also includes an OhioHealth Urgent Care facility to provide immediate medical care right in the Dublin community, with access to the entire OhioHealth system should patients need it. Also reflecting a growing role within the OhioHealth system, members of the Dublin Methodist team have key leadership roles at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware. This approach streamlines operations while enabling the hospitals to share best practices and processes to enhance quality, service and efficiency by establishing consistent practices at both facilities. It also enables the hospitals to collaborate as needed to ensure excellent service across both facilities. 13

Connected to the Community Dublin Methodist is committed to playing an important role in the health, well-being and growth of the community. As part of an OhioHealth partnership with Honda, which has major manufacturing operations in Marysville, we play an important role in providing executive health assessments and health and wellness education sessions for Honda employees. In addition to managing our special care nursey, Nationwide Children s Hospital Close to Home is located on our campus, providing the community with convenient access to urgent care. In 2012, OhioHealth announced that Dublin Methodist will play a key role in training medical students at the Dublin campus for the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine development about a mile from the hospital. Dublin Methodist, as well as other OhioHealth hospitals, will play a key role in supporting clinical rotations and expanded residency and fellowship training opportunities. 14 OhioHealth dublin Methodist HOSPITAL Five years of innovation, growth and quality care

Dublin Methodist Hospital Giving Back Dublin Methodist plays an important role in supporting key local events, such as the Dublin Irish Festival, the Memorial Tournament, the Dublin Foundation Emerald Celebration and The Emerald City Half Marathon. For several years, Dublin Methodist has worked closely with the City of Dublin to drive the growth of Healthy Dublin, a community-based health and wellness initiative designed to improve overall health and well-being by encouraging healthier lifestyles. Dublin Methodist physicians and clinical staff support educational activities, health assessments and screenings. Through Project SEARCH, Dublin Methodist helps students with physical and development disabilities explore healthcare careers. Seniors from Dublin and Hilliard high schools participate in year-long internships designed to smooth their transitions into the working world. Since launching in 2010, the program has helped 24 students with 92 percent placement and 13 graduates joining the OhioHealth team. 15
