1 VEGETOS Vol. 24 (2) : (2011) Phycodiversity of Rajasthan-III. Aquatic Algal Flora : A Compilation Pushpa Srivastava* Department of Botany, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur (Raj.)India There is hardly any water body which has not been explored in Rajasthan for the collection of aquatic algae which encompasses 9 classes i.e. Chlorophyta, Charophyta, Bacillariophyta, Xanthophyta, Chrysophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, Rhodophyta and Cyanophyta. So far 425 species comprising of 111 genera have been enlisted. Keywords: Aquatic algae, diversity, genera, species, Rajasthan INTRODUTION Aquatic algae has an edge over the algae from other habitats of Rajasthan. First report on the occurrence of fresh water algae has been extended by Blatter and Halleberg as early as 1920, who noted the presence of species of Chara in Kaylana lake and an artificial pond between Seu and Badka at Jodpur. The mass majority of aquatic algae of this area have been reported from the lakes of Rajasthan. Pichola lake (Vyas 1968), Kaylana lake (Blatter and Halleberg 1920), Lal Sagar, Takhtsagar, Balsamand, Jodhpur (Bhandari 1952, Goyal 1964 a and b) and Mansagar, Shiv doongri and Ramgarh lakes, Jaipur ( Goel et al, 1981, Trivedi 1982, Dadheech and Srivastava 1984, 1986, Bajaj and Srivastava 1985, Srivastava 1987, Sharma 1985, Singh and Srivastava 1990, Habib and Chaturvedi, 1994), and Foysagar, Ajmer (Yadav and Bhardwaj ) and Achalgarh (Shah and Gajaria 1992). Other algae have been reported from several water bodies i.e. tanks, especially Akhey Rajji s tank at Jodhpur (Bhandari 1952, Goyal 1964 a and b ), wells (Bhandari 1952, Goyal 1964), Ponds (Blatter and Halleberg 1920, Bhandari 1952, Goyal 1964 a and b, Gupta 1972), Puddles (Bhandari 1952, Gupta 1972, Bajaj and Srivastava, 1985a and b, Dadheech and Srivastava 1984), pools (Bhandari 1952, Gupta 1972), Bundhs (Bhandari 1952, 1955), Kunds ( Goyal 1964 a, b, Gupta 1972, Bhandari 1961) rivers (Bhandari 1952) and water streams (Gandhi 1955). Bhandri (1952) described about 107 species belonging to 77 genera mainly from Chlorophyta, Cyanophya, Bacillariophyta and Xanthophyta which were collected from a variety of water bodies at Jodhpur like Chapsani bundh, Motikund, Akhey Rajji tank, Mandore ponds, Ummed Bandha, Kalyana, Ranisar, Takhtsagar, Balsamand, Lalsagar, Luni river, Deokund, Bijolai, Gangelaw and Ratananda. Bhandari (1955) also described a rare alga of Rajasthan Characiosiphon rivularis Lyeng from Ummed bundh and reported an abnormal conjugation in Spirogyra brazilliensis (Nord.) Trans., collected from Moti kund in Shah et al. (1992) have further added a few Xanthophyta. A systematic description of aquatic algae of Jodhpur has been added to our knowledge by Goyal (1964 a and b). His flora comes mainly from Lalsagar, Takhtsagar, Kaylana, wells at Mandore, Motikund, Akhey Rajji s tank, and Balsamand. The reports included algae belonging to Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta. Gupta (1972) explored blue green algae from various localities in Rajasthan mainly from Kota, Ranthambore, rice fields of Salumber, Pushker at Ajmer, Jhalawar and Pools of Mount Abu. A group of algae which is cosmopolitan in its distribution but meagerly reported from Rajasthan is Bacillariophyta (Diatoms). Gandhi (1955) published fresh water diatoms from Pratapgarh for the first time. These diatoms were collected from rain water stream merging in a rivulet Jakam and finally pours into the Som tributary of Mahi river. His record added five new species and two new forms to the already known *Corresponding author [email protected] 186

2 Pushpa Srivastava list of diatoms, Gopal et al. ( 1981), Trivedi (1982) and Habib and Chaturvedi (1992) added a dozen diatoms from Mansagar, Shiv doongri and Ramgarh lakes of Jaipur. Significant contributions are on record which have filled in the lacunae in the algal floristics of Rajasthan. Vyas (1968) recorded the presence of Dinophycean and Chrysophycean algae from Pichhola lake in small number. Euglenophyta, known for its abundance and rich organic contents has been reported from this region. Four species of Phacus (Vyas 1968) besides Euglena acus (Trivedi 1982) are the only Eugleninae reported so far from Rajasthan. School of algae at Jaipur is actively engaged in exploring the algae of this area (Dadheech and Srivastava 1980, 1984, Bajaj and Srivastava 1985 a, b, Dua and Srivastava 1987, Srivastava 1987, Singh and Srivastava 1990 a and b) and reported few Chlorophytes mainly the Chlorococcales and Cyanophytes from Ramgarh lake and ponds at Ajmer road. A reare alga Compsopogan alwerensis (Jain and Srivastava 1997) marked the presence of red algae in Rajasthan. Table 1. Algal flora reported from Rajasthan CHLOROPHYTA Chlamydomonas sp. 16 Pushpa Srivastava CONCLUSION Most of the area of the state of Rajasthan falls under arid and semiarid zones due to Thar deserts. Its noteworthy that most of the algal species have been reported from aquatic habitats of Rajasthan. The flosistic composition covers around seven algal classes i.e. Chlorophyta,(including Charophyta), Euglenophyta, Bcillariophyta, Xanthophyta, Rhodophyta, Chrysophyta, Dinophyta and Cyanophyta, According to Prasad (1984), 2475 genera and species of algae have been reported from all over the world. In India, 660 genera and 5,136 species have been recoded so far. Out of this, 241 genera and 690 species have been listed from the state of Rajasthan. From aquatic habitats of this state, 111 genera and 425 species have been accounted of which around half of the algal forms have been reported from fresh water habitats. It deserves a special mention that this state is rich in rivers and their tributaries but the river flora remained totally unexplored. REFERENCES Bajaj Veena and Srivastava P (1985).
