Your financial adviser can help you decide on the best funds to choose, in line with your attitude to risk and your retirement objectives.
4 i2live retirement solutions i2live products i2live consists of three essential retirement planning products: i2live Accumulator a simple personal pension plan to consolidate and grow your assets i2live Drawdown capped drawdown* pension product with an Income Guarantee Option i2live Annuity a flexible annuity offering income choice and growth potential with an Income Guarantee Option. Whatever stage you ve reached in your retirement, you are free to select the product that s right for you and to move seamlessly from one product to another, keeping the same investment strategy if you wish *. Both our income products allow you to remain invested in equities and offer the option of a guaranteed minimum income to ensure your income will never fall below a certain level, whatever happens to the markets. The importance of expert advice By keeping your pension fund invested in a suitable range of funds, you will have access to potential growth which could help to combat the effects of inflation and prevent your income from being eroded over time. Remember, the performance of your chosen investment funds can go down as well as up and past performance is not a guide to the future. Choosing where to invest is dependent on a number of factors. Your financial adviser will help you to understand these and see how they apply to your personal situation. * Please note you can only convert an i2live Accumulator to an i2live Drawdown policy from 6 April 2015 if you already have an existing i2live Drawdown. This is because we cannot create new drawdown policies from 6 April 2015 as we are not offering flexi access drawdown contracts. * Capped drawdown - an income withdrawal product with an HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) set limit on the amount of income that can be withdrawn in a year.

6 Working in partnership with Morningstar OBSR Independent experts Morningstar OBSR provides independent research and forwardlooking fund ratings to help investors identify appropriate high quality investments. It maintains the integrity of its qualitative research through a rigorous methodology that involves face-toface meetings with fund managers and quarterly fund reviews. The ratings that emerge from Morningstar OBSR s research indicate whether its analysts conclude that a fund can outperform its peer group and/or relevant benchmark on a risk-adjusted basis over the long term. A Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating of Gold, Silver or Bronze is acknowledged to be a sign of quality. What determines Morningstar OBSR Analyst Ratings? The Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating evaluates funds on five key pillars, considering both numeric as well as qualitative factors. This approach notably puts only partial weight on past performance and backwardlooking risk measures and does not dismiss funds that have underperformed or have limited track records. The five pillars are: People - quality of a fund s investment team, based on factors including its experience, stability, structure, communication and alignment of interests with fund shareholders. Process - quality of investment process in terms of both security selection and portfolio construction and whether it is sensible, clearly defined and repeatable. In short, does the fund have a competitive advantage. Also judges whether the process is effectively implemented and whether the portfolio is consistent with the stated process. Parent - quality of the parent organisation, including capacity and risk management, recruitment and retention of talent, incentive pay, and culture of stewardship. Performance - evaluation of long-term returns, consistency of performance in different market conditions and performance relative to manager changes and changes in asset size. Price - evaluation of expense ratios, performance fees and trading costs, within the context of the relevant sales channel and market or cross-border region.
7 A guide to Morningstar OBSR Analyst Ratings A Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating of Gold, Silver or Bronze is acknowledged to be a sign of quality for a fund. Advisers refer to Morningstar OBSR Analyst Ratings when selecting suitable funds for their clients. Gold rating A Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating of Gold is the highest rating. It is awarded to funds that are Morningstar OBSR s highest conviction recommendations. By giving a fund a Gold rating, Morningstar OBSR expresses that the fund demonstrates powerful investment processes and disciplines which its analysts believe will translate into exceptional long term performance. Silver rating Funds with a Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating of Silver are high conviction recommendations. They are of superior quality with notable advantages across several of the criteria Morningstar OBSR considers when analysing each fund s investment process and track record. A fund which is Not Available means that we and Morningstar OBSR are satisfied that the fund justifies a place within the endorsed range but is not currently rated by Morningstar OBSR. A fund which is Not Endorsed is deemed to be one that has experienced significant change which may prevent the fund from being able to deliver the fund objectives consistently. Your financial adviser will provide you with the latest information on fund ratings in relation to your specific investment objectives. Morningstar OBSR only rate actively managed funds so the passive funds within the range will not be given a rating. Please note: For the latest Morningstar OBSR Analyst Ratings of our funds, please visit our website Your financial adviser will help you to understand these and see how they apply to your personal situation. Bronze rating A fund which achieves a Morningstar OBSR Analyst Rating of Bronze is a commendable one. It shows advantages that clearly outweigh any disadvantages and gives us the conviction to award a positive rating. Neutral rating These are funds in which Morningstar OBSR do not have a strong positive or negative conviction. In its judgment they are not likely to deliver outstanding returns, though they are not likely to underperform.. Negative rating These funds possess at least one flaw that Morningstar OBSR believes is likely to significantly hamper future performance. These faults lead it to consider these funds inferior to their peers and likely to underperform. Exceptional Very Good Good
8 Selecting funds Designed with your retirement in mind The i2live fund range has been specifically designed to support long term strategies for retirement, enabling you to keep your pension fund invested with the opportunity to offset the effects of inflation by providing the potential for income growth. 11 11 Income Guarantee Option requirements Guaranteed minimum income for life The Income Guarantee Option provides a floor below which income cannot fall. In order for our income products to provide you with the option of a guaranteed minimum income for life, we have had to place some restrictions on the proportion of the fund that can be invested in equities when the Income Guarantee Option is selected. Maximum equity risk proportion for Income Guarantee Option purposes All pension funds listed in this guide are available for use when the income guarantee has been selected. However, for the portion of your investment to which the guarantee applies, you must not exceed the maximum equity risk proportion. More details are available in the Terms and Conditions (these are available from your financial adviser or us on request). The maximum equity risk proportion we have allocated to each fund are for income guarantee purposes only and do not necessarily reflect the actual underlying assets within the fund. If you select the Income Guarantee Option, we will regularly check whether you have exceeded the equity limit. Where it has been exceeded we may ask you to switch your investments so that you meet the requirement. More details are available in the Terms and Conditions. If the Income Guarantee Option is not selected there are no restrictions to the funds that can be selected. Your financial adviser is best placed to help you put together an investment strategy that both meets the requirements of our Income Guarantee Option and reflects your pension requirements, so please ensure you seek their advice when selecting your i2live pension funds. Please note that from 31 December 2012 you may have to pay your adviser directly for this advice.
12 Fund risks A guide to Morningstar OBSR fund types In order to assist advisers to identify appropriate funds to meet their clients requirements Morningstar OBSR have categorised funds as follows: Managed Funds Passive Direct Multimanager Invested in instruments that track the markets; allocations follow the sector peer group. Invested in equities, bonds, cash, property and other instruments; allocations determined by the manager. Invested in funds such as Unit Trusts and OEICs; allocations determined by the managers who believe they are able to add value through asset allocation at the asset class level and/or the geographical level as well as through manager selection. Equity Funds Core Core Plus Specialist Guaranteed / Protected Funds are well diversified and tightly controlled against benchmarks and therefore performance is likely to be similar to the relevant index, albeit with the possibility of incremental outperformance over the medium to long term. Invested with an awareness of benchmark but positions and therefore returns may deviate significantly, meaning these funds have higher risk levels relative to market indices and peer groups than Core funds. These are funds which are managed with little or no reference to main market indices and peer groups therefore performance will be idiosyncratic. A fund with some level of protection, not necessarily guaranteed, designed to limit the downside risk. Such protection comes at the cost of limiting upside return potential. Fixed Interest Funds Sovereign Grade Strategic Mixed Assets A fund which invests almost exclusively in highly-rated government debt. A fund which invests predominantly in investment grade corporate debt. These funds may also invest in sovereign debt and there may be some latitude at the margin to invest in high yield debt. A fund which invests in sovereign, investment grade and high yield debt with no structural bias towards any and where the fund manager is free to asset allocate across all three. A fund which invests predominantly in fixed income securities, but may also invest in equities. Such funds may also invest in hybrid securities such as convertibles and preference shares. Property funds Companies Mixed Invested in property shares only. These shares are issued by companies which invest in property. Because they are listed they are relatively liquid, albeit with some sizeable bid offer spreads or they may introduce a diliution levy in the case of single priced funds causing a sharp drop in its single price from the offer level to the bid level. Invested in a mixture of property shares and direct property holdings, which are highly illiquid. As a result, funds may refuse to allow investors to withdraw their money for an extended period to avoid being forced to sell properties at distressed levels. Your guide to individual fund risks When selecting funds, we want to ensure that you are comfortable that you have made your choice with an understanding of the types of risk involved. Your financial adviser will explain any risks related to the funds you have selected as part of the advice process, but the following table is designed to show which risks are most likely for each of the funds. The purpose of this information is to capture the broad risks associated with the i2live pension fund range. Sun Life Financial of Canada provide the fund type for the Managed and Property funds. Whilst this fund falls into the ABI sector of Guaranteed/Protected you should note that the protection within this fund is not guaranteed. You should also note that the fund aims to be of lower risk than an equity based investment and is designed for the more cautious investor.
14 Potential risk a b c d e Past performance should not be taken as a guide to future performance; the value of your investments, and any income received, can go down as well as up and you may not get back the amount of your original investment. Funds that invest predominantly in sub-investment grade bonds - those with a rating of BB or less from credit rating agency Standard & Poor s or Ba or less from credit rating agency Moody s - have potential for higher returns than investment grade bonds but are also subject to greater risk. Bond funds - the value of a bond will fall if the issuer s credit rating is reduced and there is a risk of default, or non-payment, from the bond issuer. Funds with exposure to less developed overseas markets pose greater investment risk than funds invested in more established markets. These emerging markets funds can be more volatile than investments in more developed markets and the value of your investments could move sharply up or down. Funds that invest in overseas markets are exposed to changes in exchange rates. If the currency of your country of residence gains strength against the currency of your investment, the value of your holding may be reduced. f g h i j k Funds with a relatively small number of holdings can be more volatile than funds holding a larger number and wider spread of investments. Funds that invest predominantly in smaller companies are subject to greater risk than funds invested in larger, more established companies. Funds that invest predominantly in cash may be affected if an institution which they invest in experiences financial difficulty. A Fund of Funds is a fund that invests in other funds, and as such may be subject to higher costs, due to management charges on each underlying fund as well as for management of the Fund itself. Funds with direct investments in property may be subject to greater risk. The value of property is generally a matter of a valuer s opinion rather than fact. There may also be challenges when it comes to selling property. Inflation, over time, may erode the buying power of your investment.
