MAINFRAME DOW NSIZING The business challenge Downsizing makes it possible to migrate legacy applications from an expensive technology platform such as a mainframe to a cheaper one like an Intelbased platform, for instance while at the same time maintaining at least the same level of performance and security: Cost reduction - Downsizing the mainframe reduces operational outlays (such as license costs and maintenance costs) by using productivity tools. Personnel costs are also lower because less technical staff is required. Ease of data migration - The migration process to the new system includes the conversion of obsolete data storage systems to relational databases. This opens the possibility to access data using SQL, instantly making the task of accessing data much easier. Improve performance - Performance can be improved thanks to open-platform technology by simplifying database access and a better integration of other IT systems. Key findings The size of mainframe organizations evaluating migrations of some or all their workloads, as measured in millions of instructions per second (MIPS), has grown dramatically in the past two years, to around 2,000 to 3,000 MIPS and higher. Downsizing has emerged as a relatively low-cost, low-risk approach to shifting workload quickly and saving on hardware and software costs. Code transformation technology has improved dramatically over the last several years and is often used to shift workload to newer platforms and languages, while preserving its inherent business value. Recommendations Consider downsizing when the existing applications still represent valid commercial business processes or government agency missions. When shifts to modern platforms also imply greater interest in newer languages, evaluate code transformation solutions to evolve the application from legacy skills dependencies. Rewriting existing business applications offers the greatest flexibility, albeit at the greatest cost and risk. Gartner Research 25/03/2016 4

MAINFRAME DOW NSIZING Value Argumentation Value Proposition Summary The downsizing practice allows to migrate a legacy application from an expensive technology platform such as a mainframe to a cheaper one like an Intel based platform, maintaining at least the same level of performance and security. The downsizing is made through a GFT framework that delivers methodology, tools and resources to respond to this demand, maintaining application stability and IT system integrity using a Rapid Technological Evolution approach vs. IT Platform Big Bang Value Statements High quality migration through the usage of GFT automatic software analysis and generation architecture called GET GFT Enterprise Transformation Testing is facilitated by the use of the same data of the legacy applications Maintenance costs reduction through the usage of productivity tools Database access simplification Better integration with the other IT systems Technology innovation with no impact to the final users Value retention: the migrated application implements exactly the same application logic of the original application that has been developed over the years of maintenance / enhancements 25/03/2016 6
MAINFRAME DOW NSIZING Addressing the challenge The GFT Mainframe Downsizing offering is composed of the following services: Assessment - In order to define a modernization strategy that is in line with the customer goals and, at the same time, in line with the business and IT requirements, the project begins with an assessment that will clearly identify the scope of the supply, highlighting the criticalities of the project and giving a correct size of the total cost and duration of the project Proof of Concept (PoC) - The assessment can be completed with a Proof Of Concept project, to certify the results that have been defined during the assessment phase. Source Code Transformation Most of the times, a downsizing project requires changes in the applications to better fit to the landing platform. Source Code Transformation has a great advantage compared to rewriting the application, because it retains the value of the original business logic: cheaper and safer! This is possible through GET (GFT Enterprise Transformation) Architecture that is composed of a set of tools and software components that are customized depending on the specific project requirements. GET Technology is a GFT asset, that means that all required customizations and changes can be done directly by GFT. GET Technology offers automatic generation of a new version of source code from a pre-existing source code basing on defined conversion rules. Conversion rules can be applied to make automatic changes on the code (i.e. enlarge a field) or even to change the language (i.e. from COBOL to Java) 25/03/2016 7
MAINFRAME DOW NSIZING Addressing the challenge Testing is one of the most important service of a downsizing project. A well organized test phase will identify all the problems before the go-live that will be easier. Depending on the criticality of the application, the testing phase can arrive to be defined as a parallel run, where the original and destination environments applications are ran with the same data, and results (data reports and messages) will be compared to highlights possible differences Go-Live Go-live planning, tests and support are part of the go-live service Post Go-Live support a defined period of assistance is normally planned after the go-live phase. The first phase of the go-live support is normally performed on-site. After the migrated applications are considered stable, another period of on-call support can be planned. 25/03/2016 8
1. The business challenge 2. Addressing the challenge 3. Examples of successful approaches 4. Benefits of working with GFT
Project Example TV Advertising Company The challenge The IT System was hosted in outsourcing by an important international player and it was much expensive. Also the 80% of the applications were written in APS, a Cobol generator that was acquired by the company to standardize and speed up the developments. Those kinds of tools were quite diffused in 80s. Targets: Saving Remove the constraint of APS because of the difficulty to find resources with the correct skills on the market The engagement Scope: Project of 1 year with a team of 4 resources, migration to an open platform and conversion from APS to structured Cobol. Key Factors: Support of customer technical and functional team (for testing) Involvement of specialized GFT team with high technical skills Usage of GFT syntax analyzers and conversion tools Delivery through a consolidated migration methodology The outcome IT System migrated from main frame with MVS to a UNIX system APS programs migrated to organized and structured Cobol programs 170 DL/I segments converted into Oracle tables 30 VSAM indexed files converted into Oracle tables 800 MVS JCLs converted into korn shells. Main frame scheduler replaced by a UNIX scheduler, all interfaces with external system have been reengineered All programs tested first by GFT resources (unit and integration testing) then by the customer team (UAT) Results: Saving: more than 60% All programs are now written in Cobol that makes the maintenance easier More flexibility: all application data are now stored in a relational DB that makes extremely easy to be accessed from external 25/03/
Project Example Oil & Gas Italian Company The challenge The Oil & Gas company had 6 different local IT application systems to manage the 6 production plants in Italy. The applications were hosted by specific hardware and operating systems (CCC - Concurrent Computer Corporation) with big problems of reliability and huge performance problems. Targets: Increase the reliability Improve the performance The engagement Scope: 6 Projects for a total of 2 years with a team of 4 resources, migration from CCC to an open platform. Key Factors: Support of customer technical and functional team (for testing) Involvement of specialized GFT team with high technical skills Usage of GFT syntax analyzers and conversion tools Reuse of most of the customized tools after the first project Delivery through a consolidated migration methodology The outcome IT System migrated from CCC with a proprietary operating system to a UNIX system batch and online Cobol programs converted indexed files converted into 600 Oracle tables OS JCLs converted into korn shells. Proprietary TP Monitors (2 different types) have been rewritten using C language to be run under UNIX environment All programs tested first by GFT resources (unit and integration testing) then by the customer team (UAT) Results: The new systems are now running on open platform servers, that have been structured to grant a high availability of the service. With new CPUs the performances have been increased by 5 times Unrequested but appreciated result: saving of 30% 25/03/
Project Example Gas Turbine French Company The challenge The full IT System was hosted in a mainframe with a very old version of the operating system, managed by a French public company, that communicated to the customer that the mainframe outsourcing service would have been discontinued in a short time. They had to choose to move the system AS IS to a new mainframe somewhere, or to start a downsizing project. Targets: Grant the continuity of the service Saving The engagement Scope: Project of 1 year with a team of 4 resources, migration to an open platform. Key Factors: Support of customer technical and functional team (for testing) Involvement of specialized GFT team with high technical skills Usage of GFT syntax analyzers and conversion tools Delivery through a consolidated migration methodology The outcome IT System migrated from main frame with DOS/VSE to a UNIX system batch and CICS Cobol programs converted and 200+ Assembler programs reengineered 230 multi-record VSAM indexed files converted into 600 Oracle tables DOS/VSE JCLs converted into korn shells. Custom developed scheduler migrated to the new platform, CA utility DRET rewritten in C language to be operational on UNIX. All interfaces with external system have been reengineered All programs tested first by GFT resources (unit and integration testing) then by the customer team (UAT) Results Saving: more than 70% The new system is now running on an open platform with same security level and increased performance, granting the continuity of the service More flexibility: all application data are now stored in a relational DB that makes extremely easy to be accessed from external 25/03/
