2 ADULT ENGLISH Cork English College Cork English College is a centre of excellence for language teaching. CEC was established in 1978 and since opening has trained more than 40,000 students from all over the world. CEC is inspected regularly and is recognised by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. We are an authorised Cambridge Examination Testing Centre and an authorised IELTS Examination Centre. Programme Details This full-time programme of English and Academic study is designed to meet the needs of prospective international postgraduate students who need to improve their academic English in addition to developing subject specific knowledge in their chosen area of study. The programme equips each learner with the academic language skills in addition to the subject-specific and IT skills needed to pursue a course of study in an English-speaking university. The course consists of three core components: EAP - Academic English and IELTS Preparation Study and Research Skills Masters Preparation Programme (3 options) Learners on the University Pre Masters Programme will complete a course in English for Academic Purposes in addition to preparing to take the IELTS examination (International English Language Testing System). Through the Masters Preparation Programme the following options are available: Business / Computing / Social Sciences Science / Health Engineering / Mathematics During seminars and tutorials, learners will work with qualified tutors to carry out individual and group research projects and build on their subject-specific knowledge within their areas of study. Learners will also attend a number of lectures related to their Masters Programme. All options include work with a variety of software packages and platforms and students are expected to gain competency in using computers to organize and retrieve information, produce texts and prepare presentation visuals. 3 Masters Preparation Programme Options Students participate in seminars and projects designed to familiarise them with conducting library and web-based research, producing research papers and presentations, and referencing source material. Students work co-operatively with tutors to develop a learning and research plan that will meet their needs and prepare them for their specific Masters course. CEC works with the student s chosen university to ensure that they build on their knowledge within their specialty while at the same time improving the linguistic, research and technology skills they will need in order to succeed in their Masters course. Students undertake subject-based tutorials, seminars and lectures in one of three optional areas: Business / Computing / Social Sciences Science / Health Engineering / Mathematics Transferring to third level course: On successful completion of the Cork English College Foundation Programme, student progress to study their chosen Masters degree programme. 4 Programme Objectives and Outcomes Programme Objectives: To provide learners with the practical skills and knowledge needed to make a successful transition to third level education. To introduce students to Masters degree level studies by improving study skills such as essay writing, presentations, referencing of essays, use of sources, and research methods. To help students to achieve the necessary English language level to gain entry on to their chosen Masters programme. To assist students in all aspects of the application process for Masters programmes. To ensure that all students have a sufficiently sound knowledge of essential IT skills. To enable students to evaluate and apply knowledge in their particular field of study. To promote the concept of independent learning. Assessment: Continuous assessment across all components will be based on seminar participation, portfolio work, presentations and research projects. Final assessment will include completion of a mini-thesis. Academic English will be assessed by means of scheduled progress tests and 3 IELTS examinations throughout the course. On successful completion of this programme, learners will be able to: Demonstrate 6.5 in the IELTS examination, scoring no less than 6.0 in any one paper. Participate effectively in personal and group study context using the tools and strategies of formal higher education. Demonstrate the capacity to take responsibility for own learning in a managed context. Pursue a 3 rd level Masters programme delivered in English, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired on the pathways programme. Demonstrate confidence in their ability to use English in an academic environment and in social settings. This will be evidenced by an independently assessed IELTS score. 5 Learner Profile Learners on this programme will enjoy working with people and be good communicators with the ability to receive and express ideas and information confidently to others through various methods. They will have a natural curiosity to acquire the skills necessary to conduct research and show independence in learning. They will be reflective with a capability to assess and understand their own strengths and limitations in order to support learning and personal development. Entry Criteria Learners seeking entry to this programme will: Have successfully completed a primary degree and be able to provide transcripts translated where necessary Will have a level of English equivalent to IELTS 5.5 (no less 5.0 in any one skill) or a recognized equivalent. Course Dates: 4th January th August Course Timetable: This is a full time course comprising 24 contact hours per week. Where can I study after I complete the programme? In order to apply candidates must complete CEC Pre-Masters Application Form Application form for chosen university (available from CEC) Applications must also be accompanied by supporting academic documentation: IELTS Certificate or accepted equivalent (5.5 overall, with not less than 5.0 in any skill) Official academic transcripts of undergraduate qualifications 2 Academic References Copy of Passport (photo page only) Graduation certificate Official documentation of any other academic/professional non-degree qualifications 500 word personal statement reflecting your interests, qualities, experience and why you wish to undertake your studies in your chosen university, plus a copy of your CV/resume. Official documentation of any other academic/professional non-degree qualifications On receipt of the appropriate documentation, we will present this to the university. If you comply with the academic entry requirements for the university, a conditional letter of offer will be issued.
