1 Oregon State University Cascades Campus Graduate Level Master of Arts in Teaching Program Application Packet I. MAT Program Application: Submit one (1) complete application packet to: Office of Enrollment Services, Cascades Hall, 2600 NW College Way, Bend, OR Will be considered on a space-available basis. The application packet should contain the following. Applicants are strongly advised to keep copies of all materials submitted. 1. This application checklist signed and dated (p. 1). 2. Program Application, Initial Teaching License (p. 4). 3. Form B, Subject Matter Competency List(s), typed or formatted on a computer, can be downloaded from (pp. 5 6). 4. TSPC Character Questions form, signed and dated (see p. 7). 5. Three letters of recommendation (please use attached form for each person, p. 8). One letter must come from an educator who has observed you in a formal school setting, attesting to your competence in working with school-age children at the authorization level(s) you are seeking. A second letter must attest to your academic ability. The third letter may fit into either of the above categories or be from an employer. 6. One unofficial copy of the transcript from each college and university attended, (including OSU if applicable). 7. The Student Teaching Placement Portfolio This packet is sent to public school principals when requesting student teaching placements. It will include: a. Student teaching placement request cover letter (sample on p. 10). b. Resume (sample on pp.11-13). c. Career Goal Statement essay. See attached Student Teaching Placement Portfolio Instructions to develop your packet (see p. 9). If completed, please include copies of passing test scores for the following tests with application packet: 8. Required tests: a. CBEST or all three subtests of the PRAXIS PPST, and the b. ORELA Multiple Subjects Exam, Subtests I and II. Passing scores on these tests are required before entering the program in June II. Graduate Admission Application (to be done in addition to MAT Program Application): 1) Submit online: 1. Electronic graduate admissions application (necessary for admission to all graduate degree programs). 2 GRADUATE LEVEL MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING PROGRAM Initial Teaching License Application Packet Oregon State University Cascades Campus offers a Professional Teacher Education Program to prepare public school teachers for 21 st century schools in early childhood (age 3 - grade 4) and elementary (grades 3-8). In this packet you will find: Admission information for the Master of Arts in Teaching Program; Application Procedures; Program Application, Initial Teaching License; Form B; TSPC Character Questions; Recommendation Form; Teaching Authorizations; Test Information. Should you have questions, please contact OSU-Cascades Admissions at ADMISSION TO THE MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING PROGRAM Admission to the Professional Teacher Education Program is selective and competitive. Consequently not all applicants are admitted. Applications received after December 1, 2008 may be considered on a space-available basis only after all those received by December 1, 2008 have been fully considered. Within OSU s Guiding Principles, the Professional Teacher Education Program recognizes a responsibility to society to contribute to its social, aesthetic, and economic well-being. Diversity is a key to the success of our programs. Our programs open the doors wider for any groups that are underrepresented or that have suffered from discrimination. While acceptance as a graduate student is not required to begin the Initial License program, you must be admitted as a graduate student to complete the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Students not admitted to a degree-granting program are not eligible for financial aid of any kind. Admission into the licensure program is contingent upon passing the CBEST or PRAXIS PPST, and the ORELA Multiple Subject Examination, Subtests I and II. Admission Requirements and Criteria 1. A bachelor's degree (necessary for admission to all graduate degree programs), documented by official transcripts of grades. 2. Minimum grade-point average of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter credits of graded undergraduate work and all work completed thereafter (necessary for admission to all graduate degree programs), documented by official transcripts of grades. 3. Competence in subject matter for desired teaching areas (documented by Form B and transcripts of grades). 4. Competence in working with school-age children or youth at the age level at which the candidate is seeking licensure in schools or social service settings; experience in public school settings is required (at least 90 hours working with students in a formal school setting documented by letters of recommendation, interview, statement of professional goals, resume). 5. Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication (documented by letters of recommendation, basic educational skills test score, written statement of professional goals, resume, and interview). 6. Sincere and appropriate desire to become a public school teacher and an understanding of the life demands placed on a teacher (documented by letters of recommendation, statement of professional goals, resume, and interview). 7. Truthful answers to Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) character questions (documented by the TSPC Character Questions form). Note: Successful applicants by Oregon law must submit one fingerprint card for processing by the Oregon State Police and the FBI before beginning the student teaching field experience. 2

3 APPLICATION PROCEDURES 1. Applicants are responsible for assuring that all sources of admission evidence (other than interview results) are in their application files at Office of Admissions, OSU-Cascades, 2600 NW College Way, Bend, OR by the application deadline. Also, applicants are responsible for assuring that all Admission Requirements and Criteria are addressed by sources of evidence other than interview results, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, resume, etc. 2. Applications are reviewed by screening committees to identify candidates who are qualified based on the evidence available. 3. Following the initial screening, qualified applicants are required to interview with OSU faculty members. The interview may also include public school educators. The interview team adds its assessments to the applicant s file. The applicants will also complete an on-site writing sample at the interview. 4. Following the interview, the faculty for the teacher education program considers all evidence and makes admission recommendations to the Department Chair. 5. Applicants who complete the application process above are notified of the program admission decision in writing by US mail. CAREER GOAL STATEMENT ESSAY (see below) GUIDE FOR WRITING CAREER GOAL STATEMENT ESSAY The Career Goal Statement is an essay describing your professional teaching goals and/or purposes and motivation for wanting to be a teacher. The essay is sent to public schools when we request placements for internships. Your essay will be carefully reviewed by university faculty, mentor teachers and school administrators to help determine your eligibility for student teaching. It should represent your best writing. Approximately 500 words in length, or about 2 typed, double spaced pages Be sure to add your name and the title Career Goal Statement to the top of the essay. What made you want to be a teacher? 14 OREGON TEACHING AUTHORIZATIONS After January 15, 1999 all new Oregon teachers must meet the requirements of new TSPC-designed levels of authorization. The OSU-Cascades MAT Program prepares students for the Oregon Initial I Teaching License in two authorizations, Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. The following is a list of the authorizations and their corresponding age and grade levels: Authorization Age/Grade Levels Early Childhood Education Age 3 - Grade 4 Elementary Education Grades 3-8 TESTING INFORMATION Prior to entering the MAT program in June, all students must take and pass the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) OR all three subtests of the PRAXIS PPST. In addition, the Oregon Educator Licensure Assessment Multiple Subjects Examination (ORELA MSE) Subtests I and II are required. Copies of passing scores need to be received by the MAT program prior to June. 14
