SOLUTION BROCHURE Universal Edge Service Innovations Propelling Service Provider Growth Universal Edge Revolutionized with Application Service Capabilities, Network and Service Virtualization, and Programmable Platform

Key Challenges for Service Provider Growth Cloud, content, and mobile services are set to drive revenue growth over the next decade, as depicted in Figure 1. However, over the previous decade, many rapid shifts in technologies have enabled any Internet-based company to provide voice, video, messaging, and enterprise-it as Internet applications, without necessarily having to provide Internet access to those applications. These Internet-based applications have led the demand for higher data usage and faster connectivity in the last mile, forcing network service providers (NSPs) to upgrade and expand their networks with huge investments in fiber (FTTX) and mobile broadband (4G/LTE) buildout without the necessary additional monetization. In the middle mile, the Content Delivery Network (CDN) distributes and caches content by leasing network connectivity from NSPs at wholesale prices, while selling CDN services at premiums. This leaves NSPs transporting huge amounts of content that congest their networks without any additional monetization. Similar value chain marginalization of NSPs is also happening in the hosting and managed services business, where Internetbased entities are offering high value cloud services to enterprises on top of the commoditized Internet access provided by the NSP. As the role of NSPs in the cloud, content and mobile service value chains is increasingly under margin pressure, and the cost of keeping up with traffic demand continues spiraling upwards, the key challenge for NSPs in an ecosystem that weans subscribers away from NSP offered services is how to reinvent service models in a way that significantly increases monetization and average margin per user (AMPU). Mobile spending >$1.3 trillion by 2012 or 35 percent of the technology economy >$6 billion mobile apps today will grow to $55 billion by 2012 MOBILE Global cloud market to grow from $40.7 billion to more than $241 billion in 2020 CLOUD CONTENT Online Video Delivery Revenue >$1.7 billion in 2012, doubled from 2011 Figure 1: Growth opportunities for NSPs over the next decade 2

Juniper Networks Solution Portfolio for Service Provider Growth Juniper Networks doesn t think NSPs need yet another round of application service silos. These solutions not only create me too NSP offerings, but they also lack the flexibility required to benefit from the broader application ecosystem, thereby resulting in dead investment and status quo. Juniper s approach for this challenge is to get NSPs higher up in cloud, content and mobile service value chains by bringing strategic value generators for these ecosystems to the NSP service edge with unparalleled service flexibility and agility. This approach allows NSPs to develop and de-risk new business models for cloud, content, and mobile ecosystems generating higher monetization, and AMPU, while protecting network investment. To this end, Juniper Networks revolutionizes industry s first open and programmable Universal Edge platform with: 1. Strategic value generators for cloud, content, and mobile service monetization from both downstream subscribers and upstream providers 2. Flexibility in creating monetization services for residential, business, and mobile networks to optimize costs 3. Agility in creating and customizing services to win in the cloud, content, and mobile ecosystems By revolutionizing its industry-leading Universal Edge with service expansion, scalability, and agility (as illustrated in Figure 2 and as detailed in subsequent sections), Juniper Networks delivers solutions to the challenges facing today s NSPs. Service Expansion Service Scalability Service Agility Programmable Platform Network and Service Virtualization Application Service Capabilities Highly Scalable MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers Figure 2: Universal Edge service innovations for NSP growth Highly Scalable MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers Juniper Networks MX2020 and MX2010 3D Universal Edge Routers are the newest platforms in the Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers family. These powerful new routers replace clusters of edge routers otherwise required for handling growth in bandwidth intensive residential, business, and mobile services. Deployment ease with operational simplicity and economics are among the primary objectives for the MX2000 line of 3D universal edge routers. Another unique aspect is full investment protection and common sparing ability for all Juniper Networks Trio-based cards across the MX Series portfolio. The MX2020 brings the highest number of 100GbE, 40GbE, 10GbE, and 1GbE ports, providing 800 Gbps per slot and 80 Tbps full-duplex system capacity in a single rack unit with twice the subscriber scale compared to the competing offerings. This leaves more slots available for integrating Layer 4 through Layer 7 network and application services cards. 3

MX Series routers deliver a single platform optimized for the convergence of business, residential, and mobile service delivery, with a single, open operating system that enables service innovation and offers significant cost advantages. As a result, the Universal Edge delivers unmatched quality of experience and application service integration in a scalable solution. Application Service Capabilities Integrated with the MX Series Application Services Modular Line Card (AS-MLC) is purpose-built for enabling processing, storage, and bandwidth intensive application services on modular MX Series routers. It is an x86-based line card with modular processor and solid state drive. The first application on AS-MLC is Juniper Networks Junos Content Encore, which brings intelligent content caching and streaming capabilities to the network edge, which allows NSPs to rapidly create multi-screen TV delivery and CDN services or optimize network and user experience with transparent content proxy right at the the Universal Edge. Juniper Networks Junos Web Aware provides policy-based identification, redirection, and filtering of HTTP streams, as well as the ability to insert tags into HTTP headers. With these capabilities, service providers can offer new services such as parental control and threat mitigation, can drive traffic to special offers, and can provide actionable demographic information to advertisers without compromising subscriber privacy. Network and Service Virtualization MX Series Virtual Chassis configuration allows NSPs to manage multiple MX Series routers as a single platform, providing a fully redundant Universal Edge solution that scales beyond the limits of a single chassis. At broadband and business edge, it offers improved service-level guarantees and resiliency, while maintaining operational simplicity with member chassis that can be geographically dispersed. At the data center edge, it simplifies data center network design and optimizes network utilization in contrast to traditional L2 and L3 data center designs. Juniper Networks Junos Node Unifier provides a single touch point for clustering thousands of Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches or QFX3500 Switch ports to the MX Series router by centralizing management and automating device configuration running Juniper Networks Junos operating system. It offers several deployment options including port fan out or port multiplexer, L2 switching for server port aggregation, and L3/ MPLS routing on the EX Series or QFX Series satellite switches. Juniper Networks JunosV App Engine is a comprehensive software solution that enables network operators to easily deploy and scale both Juniper and third-party network applications. Traditional network architecture uses bump-in-the-wire or tethered appliances for each application, and typical server virtualization platforms offer compute and storage optimization by hosting these appliances. JunosV App Engine goes beyond this typical virtualization. It unifies network application provisioning, management, and performance by redefining the network architecture to a single Junos OS device with a virtual plane, where multiple physical appliances collapse into a virtual machine (VM) cluster with multiple operating systems running network applications. Most important, JunosV App Engine allows network applications to access the control plane and service plane of MX Series routers and the new virtual plane, thereby enabling NSPs to customize their value-added offerings. JunosV App Engine also provides centralized visibility and control of these applications from Junos OS. The JunosV App Engine delivers agility by integrating applications written in any language, that run in any OS environment, without spending the time to port the code of existing applications to Junos OS. It also delivers flexibility by providing network node tethered and router integrated line card-based deployment options. Juniper Networks JunosV Firefly delivers industry-leading Junos OS security services like stateful firewall and IPsec VPN, packaged as a virtual machine. JunosV Firefly furthers Juniper s integrated security for virtualized data centers by allowing service providers to easily scale large cloud deployments while ensuring each customer s traffic is completely isolated and secure from other users within the cloud. This reduces costs as NSPs can leverage their VMware and kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) infrastructure and enables them to develop revenue-generating, managed security services. 4

Programmable Platforms Juniper Networks Junos SDK challenges the paradigm of closed and non-extensible software powering network devices. It opens up Junos OS and JunosV App Engine enabled devices to allow NSPs to rapidly rewire their service delivery, thereby bringing the software platform-like agility they need to win in the application service ecosystem. For Junos OS devices, Junos SDK offers NSPs the opportunity to build applications for the device local control and service planes. For network applications hosted on the JunosV App Engine, it offers remote routing and system language-agnostic middleware APIs for NSPs to extend their applications in various operating systems. Juniper Networks Junos Space is a secure and scalable software platform offering comprehensive element management system/network management system functionality to support both physical and virtual Juniper devices. It enables NSPs to build and deploy applications that manage and analyze network elements for security, VPNs, and media domains. It also helps NSPs manage their network investments, while providing the extensibility that customers, partners, and developers require for service flexibility and agility. Junos Space Content Director is a Junos Space application that provides the efficient, centralized configuration management of multiple Junos Content Encore platforms deployed throughout the service provider network. It allows remote management and provisioning of the entire caching infrastructure, and it also provides standard interfaces for interoperability with existing operations support systems (OSS). Path Computation Client, which increases application performance and network efficiency by steering traffic through the most efficient paths, is now a Junos OS feature. It allows NSPs to quickly and cost-effectively roll out new services while maximizing network resources. Innovating Cloud, Content, and Mobile Services with Universal Edge Figure 3 illustrates the blueprint of Universal Edge service innovations that enable service provider growth in the cloud, content, and mobile service ecosystem as described below. This assures service performance and security from the customer premise to the cloud data center, unlike competing offerings which are delivered over the unmanaged Internet. NSPs can provide such performance 5

assurance and security for cloud services hosted by them or by other cloud providers to offer the choice of cloud applications and providers to their enterprise customers, and to allow monetization opportunities from both the cloud service users and providers. Due to the fact that the competing Internet-based cloud service providers turn services up quickly, the key technical challenge in realizing such an offering is service velocity. Rapid creation and delivery of managed cloud services are quite challenging, not only because they require terminating hundreds of customer VPNs with myriads of VMs in the data center, but also because they cross the organizational boundaries of NSP networking and IT departments. Juniper s Universal Edge service innovations solution delivers a strategic value generator by seamlessly extending customer VPNs to cloud data centers: Integrating provider edge (PE) routers and L4 to L7 services at service point-of-presence (POP) with massive scale and port density Collapsing layers of data center routing, switching, and security devices otherwise required with the MX Series Virtual Chassis configuration Simplifying management of thousands of VM interfaces over Juniper s top-of-rack (ToR) switches using the Junos Node Unifier Extending integrated security to inter-vm interactions with JunosV Firefly Above Universal Edge service innovations maintain logical cloud customer separation at massive scale and security with high resiliency from customer premise to cloud VMs, while expediting service creation and improving network utilization. NSPs can accelerate deployment of managed cloud and hosting services by pulling high touch customer premise equipment (CPE) functionality like address assignment, Network Address Translation (NAT), firewall services, multicast, resiliency, and SNMP monitoring onto the MX Series provider edge router. This significantly improves the economics of existing services and the offering of new managed services such as software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications to enterprise customers. Universal Edge service innovations also provide service agility not possible with L2-L7 PE routers, subscriber services routers, and data center routing and switching devices offered by other vendors. Content Service Value Generator New Content Monetization Services NSPs are attempting to address the challenges of ever increasing Internet video traffic, which incurs huge costs without providing any incremental monetization. NSPs have an opportunity to bring strategic value into the content value chain by building contentcentric new services such as: Multi-screen TV and video service streaming premium TV content and movies to connected consumer devices (e.g., tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs over various HTTP adaptive streaming protocols) to attract and retain TV subscribers, generate new revenue, and differentiate from competitors Content delivery infrastructure building the edge caches and delivery infrastructure that provide CDN service to enterprise customers, online media companies, and multi- NSP CDN federation Transparent caching intelligently caching highly popular video content close to the edge of the network by serving it locally instead of traversing the network for each request, thus providing significant reductions in bandwidth and dramatically improving network scale and efficiency The key challenge for NSPs is flexibility in building these content-centric services at various network locations depending upon the business model. Universal Edge service innovations solve this challenge by integrating intelligent caching and adaptive streaming capabilities with the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers. The Application Services Modular Line Card (AS-MLC) running Junos Content Encore creates a high-performance edge caching and streaming platform on the modular MX Series routers that allows NSPs to turn up content-centric services with great flexibility for residential, business, and mobile networks. It also protects NSP investment in the MX Series infrastructure 6

and reduces the space, power, and cooling requirements while simplifying qualification, deployment, and operations of new content services. With JunosV App Engine, NSPs can create value-added network applications by chaining traffic on the MX Series service plane and JunosV App Engine virtual plane, preserving MX Series performance and optimizing the general-purpose compute platforms. Mobile Service Value Generators Enabling New Revenue and Margins Juniper Networks MobileNext enables NSPs to find new ways to accelerate the revenue potential for IP services. Juniper Networks Network Optimization Services help NSPs achieve operational excellence by reducing network complexity, consolidating network elements, and increasing service availability, performance, and scale. In NSP service POPs, Network Optimization Services provide router-integrated service orchestration and delivery via subscriber- and service-aware traffic treatment, intelligent load balancing and traffic steering, sophisticated network monitoring, advanced security services, and nextgeneration network addressing functions like Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) and DS-Lite. Universal Edge service innovations further Juniper s MobileNext solution and Network Optimization Services value propositions with: An edge caching platform (AS-MLC running Junos Content Encore), which enables NSPs to execute any video traffic management and content service strategies (e.g., transparent proxy video optimization and multi-screen video delivery) without creating new service silos and the banks of content streaming and storage appliances that would otherwise be needed Junos Web Aware, which enables monetization with new services such as parental control and threat mitigation, driving traffic to special offers, and providing actionable demographic information to advertisers without compromising subscriber privacy Summary Universal Edge Propelling Service Provider Growth Over the Next Decade Juniper s Universal Edge service innovations bring strategic value generators for the cloud, content, and mobile ecosystems to the NSP service delivery infrastructure with complete service flexibility and agility. Thus, as summarized in the table below, NSPs can develop and de-risk new service models for higher monetization and AMPU while protecting their network investment. Table 1.
