1. Current Embedded Networking Approach
Definition: LAN LAN = Local Area Network connecting computers on short distances with high speed rates. A LAN example is Ethernet. Ethernet = a LAN developed originally by Xerox Corporation based on a CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect). coaxial cable (10 Mbits/sec - 200/500m) twisted pairs(10/100mbits/sec m) optical fibre (1 Gbits/sec m) The Push for Embedded Networking Version 1.0 5
Definition: WAN & embedded networking WAN = World Area Network connecting computers on high distances with lower speed rates. A WAN example is Internet. Internet = a WAN dedicated to connect many computer (heterogenous) networks and based on a common addressing system and communication protocol suite called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). When a LAN run TCP/IP protcol, its is called «intranet». Embedded Networking = embedded device integrated in a product that will allow this product to be connected to and exchange data on LAN or WAN with a specific or standard protocols (Ethernet or Internet). The Push for Embedded Networking Version 1.0 6
Networking Generic Needs There is a large panel of market needs coming from the ever growing pressure for competitiveness. To add value to product in order to stay competitive To meet customers specific needs and be able to benefit from that advantage To share information in real time To reduce the servicing costs To remotely monitor and diagnose To eliminate the local storage and the update of maintenance and repair literature And so much more The Push for Embedded Networking Version 1.0 7
Current Embedded Networking status LAN Custom protocols on serial line: Taylored hardware/software Expensive servicing costs Limited number of possible suppliers Standard protocol: Application specific standard protocol: Fieldbus, CAN, Expensive servicing costs, limited number of possible suppliers No «universal standard protocol» WAN Very limited solutions range Hired line with specific limited protocols TCP/IP -> specific protocol PC-gateway + communication board The Push for Embedded Networking Version 1.0 8
2. New facts in Embedded Networking
New Networking Components Dramatically lower hardware costs with specific components (Moore s Law) A vending machine could incorporate remote diagnostic and Internet connectivity for about (processor, software: IP stack, interface with machine controller, modem, wiring, connectors) Significant technology improvements and volume efficiencies now makes embedded networking cost-effective for almost any application Reduced size of networking hardware Minimal board space requirements Open Source availability allows lower software development costs Information technology is becoming significantly cheaper, smaller and better. The average price of a microchip continues to drop as the performance levels improve. The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Ethernet = the winner (1/3) Ethernet won in the office environment Ethernet is wining in the industrial automation sector Solution to the «determinism» problem: Switched Ethernet directly connects the sending and receiving nodes through inexpensive switches High speed (100 Mb/sec) at low cost is to be compared to low speed and high cost of proprietary networks and filedbus networks All of the fieldbus consortia are racing to redefine their basic protocols so that they work on Ethernet and Internet protocols. Foundation Fielbus HSE, Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet, IDA,Modbus/TCP, are industrial protocols all based on IP over Ethernet Ethernet TCP/IP is an universal standard The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Ethernet = the winner (2/3) Secondary problems must still be addressed: Powering field devices from data cable is not available Fragility of RJ45 connectors Lack of hardware safety validation Overheads of Internet protocols Lack of intrinsic safety barriers for Ethernet The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Ethernet = the winner (3/3) Some figures The manufacturing and process control world market will be nearly 100% Ethernet within the next 4 years vs. 5% currently The manufacturing and process control via Ethernet market will reach around $3,5 billion by 2003 High-speed Ehternet networks are expected to dominate control-level networks for process control in the next 5 years The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Ubiquity of the Internet A. Growth of IP-related networks Data traffic is more than doubling every year Internet protocols are open standards This network infrastructure is available B. Metcalfe s Law The more network nodes there will be, the less costly it will become The value of a network increases exponentially with the number of nodes C. Internet browsing is a widespread common knowledge A + B + C Ubiquity of the Internet in everyones life around the world ; there are more and more connected people each day around the world The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Standard Wireless Solutions Advantages of wireless are obvious Wireless, no cabling, cheap Flexibility: you take your connectivity with you Components and standards become available Bluetooth is available as a single component IEEE b (11 Mb/s) IEEE a (54 Mb/s) with full CMOS solutions Internet on GSM modem The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Pervasive Internet is coming! The Push for Embedded Networking Version
3. New Trends in Embedded Networking
Pervasive Internet (1/2) The Pervasive Internet involves the extension of Internet connectivity to all devices: Home automation, Vehicle telematics, Internet-based building Industrial controls, Smart-energy, E-medicine represent emerging aspects of the Pervasive Internet. The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Pervasive Internet (2/2) The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market Perspective: The Connected Home The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market Perspective: The Connected Office Building Building control and automation in USA Control systems alone: 30 billions USD Services : 150 billions USD Applications dedicated to Lighting system, elevators, HVAC, energy consumption Optimisation leads to huge savings 1 extra Celsius degree is 1 million USD for a chain operator with 800 locations The market is also starting for small office buildings The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market Perspective: The Connected Factory The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market Perspective: the Wireless World The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market Perspective: Internet Appliances growth The Push for Embedded Networking Version
4. Factors of Success Analysis
Market evolution (1/2) Level of Performance of Device Required By Users Non-Networked marketplace Unfilled needs Non-networked Products High profit margins Med-high growth High volumes Profits come from the product/device Transition point Networked Marketplace The device becomes secondary to the value it brings to the customer. Services become the means to cultivate an ongoing customer relationship. Networked Product is good enough and therefore irrelevant / invisible. Now, it should support the customer experience. Networked Products Low product profit margins Average growth Mixed volume segments Profits come from consumables, services, and content Time The Push for Embedded Networking Version
Market evolution (2/2) Billions of Networked Sensors, Controls, Devices (Pervasive Era) 100s of Millions of Users (Dot Com Era) Millions of PCs (PC Era) July, 2000: Honeywell s Alert Manager integrates maintenance and operations information for industrial plants Beginnings of the Pervasive Era November 8, 2000: Whirlpool s Integrated Home Solution Will Use Powerline Networking & Device Control Software For Internet-connected Appliances January 18, 2000: GE, Sunbeam, AT&T, Motorola, Invensys, and emware Team To Deliver Networked Devices For Businesses & Homes June, 2001: GM Onstar Is Used In 32 Of GM s 54 Vehicle Lines And Has More Than 1 Million Subscribers June 7, 2001: Standards April 30, 2001: Baxter Healthcare and RF Technologies Sign Agreement To Jointly Market Asset Tracking Technologies September 8, 2000: EPRI offers Internet-based energy load management systems for suppliers and consumers Emerge For Talking Dishwashers and Connected Appliances Growth Over Time The Push for Embedded Networking Version
