1 Master's degree (1) The Master of Science degree programmes are consecutive researchoriented degree programmes in business studies. The programmes are intensive, full-time study programmes that, against the background of the challenges and changes in the professional world, equip students with the ability to recognize scientific and practical problems for themselves, to analyse and develop solutions to these problems using academic methods and theories, and successfully communicate and responsibly implement these solutions in organizations and institutions. In contrast to the more generalized Bachelor's degree programmes, the Master of Science degree programmes focus on acquiring a deeper understanding of the selected specialist subjects. The programmes qualify graduates to assume management positions in their specialist areas and to pursue doctoral studies. (2) In accordance with the relevant provisions of these Study and Examination Regulations, graduates in these degree programmes are awarded the academic degree "Master of Science (MSc)". (3) The Master s programmes constitute a second professional degree in the field of business studies. The international dimension of the Master's programmes prepares students for a professional career in an international environment. In addition, the programmes aim to lay the foundation for an eventual continuation of academic work within a doctoral programme. Cornerstones of the Master s programmes are academic excellence, practical relevance, internationality and personal development. (4) Taking the previous degree programme into account, each graduate from the Master s degree programme will have acquired at least 300 ECTS credits on completion of studies. (5) To achieve the set objectives, students are required to demonstrate aboveaverage motivation and willingness to perform and an interest in business issues. 2 Admission to the Master's programme (1) Requirements for admission to the Master s degree programme at EBS are the following: a. Proof of a Bachelor s degree from a German or foreign university or from an institution recognised as equivalent. The first degree qualification must comprise a minimum of 180 ECTS credits. b. Proof of knowledge worth at least 30 ECTS credits in the field of methods/business studies/economics. At least 10 of these 30 ECTS credits must be in quantitative methods. The 30 ECTS credits must include at least one course each in the areas of finance, accounting, marketing, strategy and economics. In addition, for the Master in Finance at least 10 ECTS credits must be from the field of finance. 2

Furthermore, at least 15 ECTS credits must be in quantitative methods. This knowledge can have been gained through the first degree qualification or equivalent achievements. c. Proof of internships or professional experience amounting to a minimum of 10 weeks during or following completion of the first degree. The minimum acceptable duration of each internship is 5 weeks. d. Proof of very good English language skills demonstrated by an official TOEFL or IELTS score report or by comparable skills. e. Proof of above-average verbal, qualitative and logical skills documented by an official valid GMAT, GRE or alternatively the EBScore test. f. Successful completion of the oral admission process (Personal Master s Assessment, PMA). (2) The Admissions Committee decides on admission to the Master s degree programme on the basis of the applicant s qualifications and the result of the oral admission process. There is no legal claim to admission to the Master s degree programme. (3) Admission to the degree programme will be categorically denied if the applicant does not meet the requirements laid down in 2 para. 1 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht. 3 Admissions process (1) The oral entrance examination (Personal Master s Assessment, PMA) consists of a personal structured interview lasting approximately 50 minutes to assess the candidate's personal and social competence. (2) The Admissions Committee will decide on changes to the entrance examination or on exemptions from the oral entrance examination in justified cases. 4 Study begin, standard duration of study, programme structure (1) Requirements for commencing study are admission to the programme, conclusion of the Study Agreement, payment of the enrolment and tuition fees as set forth in the tuition charges and fees schedule, and enrolment at EBS in accordance with the stipulations of the state of Hesse's Higher Education Act. (2) As a rule, the programme starts with the Fall Term of the first year of studies. The precise date for the start of the lecture period will be determined by the University and announced in the usual manner in good time. (3) The academic year starts on 1 August of a calendar year and ends on 31 July of the following calendar year. The Fall Term begins with the start of 3

the academic year on 1 August and ends on the following 31 December. The Spring Term starts on 1 January and ends on 31 July with the end of the academic year. (4) At the beginning of each academic year, the University will publish a current listing of study courses (Course Guide). This Course Guide will provide an overview of the courses offered by the University structured in semesters and modules. It includes the following information: course number, name of the course, status (compulsory or elective course), name of the lecturer, course objectives, number of ECTS credits, course format, examination procedures, and literature. (5) Modules offered are worth whole ECTS credits only. (6) Deviations from the programme structure are possible only in the case of justified exceptions and are subject to decision by the Examination Board. (7) The standard duration of study in the Master of Science degree programmes is 18 months and includes two semesters at EBS, one study semester abroad and one compulsory internship. (8) The Master of Science degree programmes comprise a total of 120 ECTS credits, generally distributed over the duration of the programmes as follows: a. 1st year of study: 57 ECTS credits for modules at EBS + 18 ECTS credits for the Master's thesis (written part 1) b. 2nd year of study: 30 ECTS credits for the study abroad + 6 ECTS credits for the Master's thesis (written part 2 + oral part defence) + 9 ECTS credits for the compulsory internship. 5 Study abroad (1) In principle, all students may complete their study abroad at all Englishspeaking EBS partner universities. Study abroad at non English-speaking universities requires proof of adequate skills in the respective foreign language. The relevant requirements are determined jointly by the Directorate Education, International Programmes and the EBS Language Instiute and will be communicated to the students in good time. (2) The allocation of study places abroad is in accordance with a set procedure determined by the University, whereby a ranking is established on the basis of the entrance scores of all students in accordance with 2 para. 1e. (3) In addition to the study places abroad at partner universities offered by EBS, students may complete their study abroad at other foreign universities of their own choice. In this case, the student must submit a separate application to the Associate Dean International Relations. The relevant requirements are defined by the Directorate Education in cooperation with International Programmes and will be communicated to the students in good time. 4

(4) Course achievements and examinations at the partner university abroad must amount to 30 ECTS credits in each semester or correspond to a full load abroad. The courses to be taken abroad must be submitted for approval to the EBS Examinations Office as part of a Learning Agreement before the start of the semester abroad. Only those courses will be recognized that have not already been taken at EBS. (5) The grades achieved during the semester abroad are entered into the calculation of the EBS Master s degree grade. They will be converted according to the EBS conversion table for grades abroad and recorded as German grades/quotients. 6 Dual degrees (1) By extending the compulsory semester abroad to a full year spent abroad selected students have the opportunity to gain an additional, international Master's degree. (2) To be admitted to a dual degree programme, students must fulfil the admission requirements of the respective partner university abroad. The final decision on acceptance to the dual degree programme lies with the partner university abroad. (3) Should there be only a limited number of places available, the choice of students will be made by the partner university. In the event that the partner university delegates the choice to EBS, places will be allocated on the basis of the rankings established in accordance with 5 para. 2. (4) Successful completion of the Master's degree programme at EBS is not contingent upon successfully completing the degree abroad. Providing that all compulsory examinations at EBS have been passed, students are awarded the academic degree Master of Science. (5) International Programmes and the EBS Language Institute support and assist students in selecting and applying for a dual degree programme. (6) Students who take part in a dual degree programme may, on request, defend their Master's thesis (defence) after completing the year abroad. (7) Achievements of students who aim for a dual degree by spending two semesters abroad are entered into the calculation of the Master s degree grade at to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits only. 7 Courses (1) The academic environment shall be conducive to the best-possible education. Therefore, courses will fundamentally follow the principle of teaching in small groups or be complemented by tutorials. The time required for self-study must be adequately taken into account by the lecturers when designing their courses. (2) Courses may take the following format: 5

a. lectures b. tutorials, as a rule in connection with lectures c. seminars and colloquia d. project work, case studies or business simulations e. other innovative course formats. (3) Primary study materials (lecture materials) will be provided to the students for each course in the University's usual manner. (4) At the end of a course students will anonymously assess the performance of the lecturers, indicating at the same time the actual workload required for the course. 8 Internships (1) In the Master of Science degree programmes one internship in a study programme relevant field and lasting at least 6 weeks must be completed after the 3rd study semester. Alternatively, the internship may be completed before the study semester abroad. (2) To be recognized as (compulsory) internships, the practical work must basically fulfil the following requirements: a. the duration of each individual internship should not be less than the minimum duration of six weeks; b. compulsory internships may not be completed in a student's own business or in a business where the student is a member of the management; c. an internship reference or equivalent confirmation in German or English must be submitted to the Examinations Office (template is available from the University) (3) At the end of the compulsory internship, students are required to write a practical paper dealing with a specific project from their internship, which they analyse using scientific methods. (4) The internship and the practical paper are worth a total of 9 ECTS credits and are an integral component of the Master's degree. The quotient of 60 examination points awarded for the practical paper is entered into the calculation of the Master's degree grade. 9 Master's thesis (1) As the final examination completed during studies, the Master s thesis should demonstrate the student's ability to deal independently with a subject to a prescribed date using adequate scientific methods and a clear approach. It consists of writing the actual Master s thesis as the written part of the examination and an oral examination ("thesis defence"). Both parts 6

of the examination must each be passed and may each be repeated only once. The written part of the examination must be the result of the student's own work, with the exclusive help of admissible aids and within the prescribed completion time. It will be reviewed by a minimum of two examiners (assessors) in separate evaluations. When the written part of the examination has been passed, it must be defended before the assessors during the thesis defence. (2) In good time before the completion time for the thesis begins, the student must agree with a supervisor (first assessor), who is an authorized examiner, on a subject suitable for achieving the purpose of the examination as described above and its supervision. Only EBS professors or teaching staff who teach or have taught independently in the respective subject area may be appointed first assessors. (3) Within the time periods usual at the University, students must submit their thesis registration stating the topic, the name of the first and second assessor and bearing the signature of the first assessor. When all requirements have been fulfilled, the Examinations Office will confirm the registration. In cases of doubt, the decision lies with the Programme Director. (4) If an institution outside the University is to have significant influence on the topic and its handling, this is also subject to approval by the Programme Director. (5) The completion time for the Master s thesis is 15 weeks. On submission of a request by the student stating justifiable reasons, the Examination Board may extend the completion time by up to three weeks. Only illness, serious physical impediments and other special reasons for which the student is not responsible (extenuating circumstances) and which inevitably prevent the student from submitting the thesis by the due date, will be considered justifiable reasons. The request must be submitted before the end of the completion time for the Master's thesis and as soon as the extenuating circumstances become apparent. (6) The times for completing and handing in the Master s thesis must be announced to the students in the University's usual manner and at least six weeks before the start of the allotted completion time. (7) The Master s thesis must be submitted electronically by the due date to the drop box In addition, a legible, hand-signed confirmation that the thesis is the student's own work produced exclusively with the help of the aids indicated must be submitted to the Examinations Office within one week. Work submitted past the due date or without the required author's confirmation will be marked "failed" (5.0). (8) The assessors will submit separate assessments to the Examinations Office. The overall grade will be determined as the arithmetic mean of the two individual assessments. Should one of the two assessors mark the work 5.0, the Examination Board will appoint a third assessor to review the work. In such cases, the overall grade will take all three assessments into account. 7

(9) As a rule the written part (thesis) must be completed during the semester break between the second semester and the semester abroad. The oral examination (defence) takes place in the third study semester and depending on its location and length, either before, during or after the semester abroad. On request, students may alternatively write the Master's thesis after completing the study abroad. 540 examination points, i.e. 75% of the overall grade for the Master's thesis, are awarded for the written part of the Master's thesis and are entered into the calculation of the Master's degree grade. 180 examination points, i.e. 25% of the overall grade for the Master's thesis, are awarded for the oral defence and are entered into the calculation of the Master's degree grade. 10 Passing the Master s examination, calculation of the overall grade (1) A student who has successfully passed or completed all examinations in accordance with 4 (8) and who has accumulated the prescribed number of ECTS credits for the degree programme will be deemed to have passed the Master s examination. (2) A student who has failed the examinations in terms of para. (1), and has failed or failed to deliver by the due date repeat performances permissible under 12 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht will be deemed to have failed the Master s examination. The student will receive notification of the definitively failed Master s examination and the mandatory removal from the students' register, together with an explanation of legal rights. (3) The grade of the Master s examination is calculated as follows: First, the total grade quotient is determined. This equals the sum of the module quotients weighted by the respective number of module credits, rounded up or rounded off in accordance with 8 para. 5 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht and divided by the number of total credits. This value will be rounded up or off accordance with 8 para. 5 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht. and entered in the semester report with a maximum of three decimal points: Total grade quotient = n i= 1 module quotient i * module credits i n i= 1 module credits i where i = module and n = number of modules. In addition to the module quotients weighted by the module credits, the grade quotients of the other examination results, including the Master s thesis, are weighted by the respective ECTS credits and also entered into this calculation. 8

Besides the calculated total grade quotient, an ECTS grade calculated in accordance with 8 para. 6 of the General Provisions for Examination Regulations will be recorded. (4) After the student has passed the Master s examination, a diploma, the Master's transcript and a diploma supplement (see attachment) will be issued. The Master's transcript is signed by the Chairman of the Examination Board, and the Master s Diploma by the Dean and Vice Dean Education at. 11 Coming into effect These Study and Examination Regulations come into effect with their publication and become valid with student intake

8. INFORMATION ON THE GERMAN HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM Types of Institutions and Institutional Status Higher education (HE) studies in Germany are offered at three types of Higher Education Institutions (HEI). 2 - Universitäten (Universities) including various specialized institutions, offer the whole range of academic disciplines. In the German tradition, universities focus in particular on basic research so that advanced stages of study have mainly theoretical orientation and research-oriented components. - Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences) concentrate their study programmes in engineering and other technical disciplines, businessrelated studies, social work, and design areas. The common mission of applied research and development implies a distinct application-oriented focus and professional character of studies, which include integrated and supervised work assignments in industry, enterprises or other relevant institutions. - Kunst- und Musikhochschulen (Universities of Art/Music) offer studies for To ens artistic careers in fine arts, performing arts and music; in such fields as directing, production, writing in theatre, film, and other media; and in a variety of design areas, architecture, media and communication. Higher Education Institutions are either state or state-recognized institutions. In their operations, including the organization of studies and the designation and award of degrees, they are both subject to higher education legislation. 8.2 Types of Programmes and Degrees Awarded Studies in all three types of institutions have traditionally been offered in integrated "long" (one-tier) programmes leading to Diplom- or Magister Artium degrees or completed by a Staatsprüfung (State Examination). Within the framework of the Bologna-Process one-tier study programmes are successively being replaced by a two-tier study system. Since 1998, a scheme of first- and second-level degree programmes (Bachelor and Master) was introduced to be offered parallel to or instead of integrated "long" programmes. These programmes are designed to provide enlarged variety and flexibility to students in planning and pursuing educational objectives, they also enhance international compatibility of studies. The German Qualification Framework for Higher Education Degrees 3 describes the degrees of the German Higher Education System. It contains the classification of the qualification levels as well as the resulting qualifications and competencies of the graduates. For details cf. Sec , 8.4.2, and respectively. Table 1 provides a synoptic summary. 8.3 Approval/Accreditation of Programmes and Degrees To ensure quality and comparability of qualifications, the organization of studies and general degree requirements have to conform to principles and regulations established by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK). 4 In 1999, a system of accreditation for programmes of study has become operational under the control of an Accreditation Council at national level. All new programmes have to be accredited under this scheme; after a successful accreditation they receive the quality-label of the Accreditation Council. 5 Table 1: Institutions, Programmes and Degrees in German Higher Education 12

8.4 Organization and Structure of Studies The following programmes apply to all three types of institutions. Bachelor s and Master s study courses may be studied consecutively, at various higher education institutions, at different types of higher education institutions and with phases of professional work between the first and the second qualification. The organization of the study programmes makes use of modular components and of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) with 30 credits corresponding to one semester Bachelor Bachelor degree study programmes lay the academic foundations, provide methodological skills and lead to qualifications related to the professional field. The Bachelor degree is awarded after 3 to 4 years. The Bachelor degree programme includes a thesis requirement. Study courses leading to the Bachelor degree must be accredited according to the Law establishing a Foundation for the Accreditation of Study Programmes in Germany. 6 First degree programmes (Bachelor) lead to Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Master Master is the second degree after another 1 to 2 years. Master study programmes may be differentiated by the profile types practice-oriented and research-oriented. Higher Education Institutions define the profile. The Master degree study programme includes a thesis requirement. Study programmes leading to the Master degree must be accredited according to the Law establishing a Foundation for the Accreditation of Study Programmes in Germany. 7 Second degree programmes (Master) lead to Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Master of Laws (L.L.M.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), Master of Music (M.Mus.) or Master of Education (M.Ed.). Master study programmes which are designed for continuing education may carry other designations (e.g. MBA) Integrated "Long" Programmes (One-Tier): Diplom degrees, Magister Artium, Staatsprüfung An integrated study programme is either mono-disciplinary (Diplom degrees, most programmes completed by a Staatsprüfung) or comprises a combination of either two major or one major and two minor fields (Magister Artium). The first stage (1.5 to 2 years) focuses on broad orientations and foundations of the field(s) of study. An Intermediate Examination (Diplom- Vorprüfung for Diplom degrees; Zwischenprüfung or credit requirements for the Magister Artium) is prerequisite to enter the second stage of advanced studies and specializations. Degree requirements include submission of a thesis (up to 6 months duration) and comprehensive final written and oral examinations. Similar regulations apply to studies leading to a Staatsprüfung. The level of qualification is equivalent to the Master level. - Integrated studies at Universitäten (U) last 4 to 5 years (Diplom degree, Magister Artium) or 3 to 6.5 years (Staatsprüfung). The Diplom degree is awarded in engineering disciplines, the natural sciences as well as economics and business. In the humanities, the corresponding degree is usually the Magister Artium (M.A.). In the social sciences, the practice varies as a matter of institutional traditions. Studies preparing for the legal, medical and pharmaceutical professions are completed by a Staatsprüfung. This applies also to studies preparing for teaching professions of some Länder. The three qualifications (Diplom, Magister Artium and Staatsprüfung) are academically equivalent. They qualify to apply for admission to doctoral studies. Further prerequisites for admission may be defined by the Higher Education Institution, cf. Sec Integrated studies at Fachhochschulen (FH)/Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) last 4 years and lead to a Diplom (FH) degree. While the FH/UAS are non-doctorate granting institutions, qualified graduates may apply for admission to doctoral studies at doctorate-granting institutions, cf. Sec Studies at Kunst- and Musikhochschulen (Universities of Art/Music etc.) are more diverse in their organization, depending on the field and individual objectives. In addition to Diplom/Magister degrees, the integrated study programme awards include Certificates and certified examinations for specialized areas and professional purposes. 8.5 Doctorate Universities as well as specialized institutions of university standing and some Universities of Art/Music are doctorate-granting institutions. Formal prerequisite for admission to doctoral work is a qualified Master (UAS and U), a Magister degree, a Diplom, a Staatsprüfung, or a foreign equivalent. Particularly qualified holders of a Bachelor or a Diplom (FH) degree may also be admitted to doctoral studies without acquisition of a further degree by means of a procedure to determine their aptitude. The universities respectively the doctorate-granting institutions regulate entry to a doctorate as well as the structure of the procedure to determine aptitude. Admission further requires the acceptance of the Dissertation research project by a professor as a supervisor. 8.6 Grading Scheme The grading scheme in Germany usually comprises five levels (with numerical equivalents; intermediate grades may be given): "Sehr Gut" (1) = Very Good; "Gut" (2) = Good; "Befriedigend" (3) = Satisfactory; "Ausreichend" (4) = Sufficient; "Nicht ausreichend" (5) = Non-Sufficient/Fail. The minimum passing grade is "Ausreichend" (4). Verbal designations of grades may vary in some cases and for doctoral degrees. In addition institutions partly already use an ECTS grading scheme. 8.7 Access to Higher Education The General Higher Education Entrance Qualification (Allgemeine Hochschulreife, Abitur) after 12 to 13 years of schooling allows for admission to all higher educational studies. Specialized variants (Fachgebundende Hochschulreife) allow for admission to particular disciplines. Access to Fachhochschulen (UAS) is also possible with a Fachhochschulreife, which can usually be acquired after 12 years of schooling. Admission to Universities of Art/Music may be based on other or require additional evidence demonstrating individual aptitude. Higher Education Institutions may in certain cases apply additional admission procedures. 8.8 National Sources of Information - Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) [Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany]; Lennéstrasse 6, D Bonn; Fax: +49[0]228/ ; Phone: +49[0]228/ Central Office for Foreign Education (ZaB) as German NARIC; [email protected] - "Documentation and Educational Information Service" as German EURYDICE-Unit, providing the national dossier on the education system ( europaeischerebene-im-eurydice-informationsnetz.html; [email protected]) - Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) [German Rectors Conference]; Ahrstrasse 39, D Bonn; Fax: +49[0]228/ ; Phone: +49[0]228/887-0; [email protected] - "Higher Education Compass" of the German Rectors Conference features comprehensive information on institutions, programmes of study, etc. ( 1 The information covers only aspects directly relevant to purposes of the Diploma Supplement.
