As a result there is a new for new graduates to understand the underlying networking principles, standards, applications and uses of the Internet. This module presents the technical and research challenges associated with developing online and mobile entertainment applications, and provides students with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to program them.

2 AIMS The aims of this module are to introduce the underlying networking concepts, the protocols and standards which comprise the Internet, Internet trends and applications, the mobile Internet, security and online gaming. The Internet and World Wide Web are dramatically changing the world we live in and this course will strive to provide a holistic view of the Internet so that students can more fully understand the concepts involved. The technical and research challenges posed by online entertainment applications are also reviewed. The module also aims to foster an understanding and level of expertise in using advanced Internet Technologies and toolkits. Furthermore, the module will provide students with an opportunity to develop the programming skills necessary to create robust Internet applications and mobile games. LEARNING OUTCOMES A successful student will be able to show that he/she can: KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING K1 K2 K3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key principles and concepts that underpin computer networking, internet applications and mobile games. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and techniques used to develop Internet Applications and related protocols and standards. Display an appreciation of the technical and research challenges facing developers of network based environments. Apply a range of technical solutions that address the technical challenges associated with the design of Internet Technologies. Communicate and implement appropriate network applications. 3 CONTENT The Network underneath - Protocol stacks, standards and issues, Causes of Delay, Multimedia on the network, Wireless technologies, Quality of Service and Autonomic systems Internet Building Blocks Protocols and Standards, HTML/XML/PMXML/RSS, Java & JavaScript and Middleware Internet Trends, Applications and Services - AJAX, Google gears, WikiWikiWeb, Search engine optimisation techniques & vertical search engines, Web Intelligence, Online collaboration, Online gaming & wide area location based gaming, Semantic web, Civil liberties, Web accessibility, Web Services, Long tail & Library 2.0, Social networking, VoiceXML, Podcasting, Automated Media Monitoring, Data Portability and WebOS The Mobile Internet - Location based mobile applications, Mobile HCI - adapting information for mobile devices, Browsing the web on mobiles, Video games & mobile phones, Location based mobile applications, Wide area gaming and Body Area networks Internet Security Cryptography, Universal Authentication, Honeynets, Wireless (WiFi) Security, Digital watermarking, Steganography, SPAM, Hacking, SPIT, Cyberterrorism and Computer Fraud Online Gaming - Gaming middleware, Peer to Peer gaming and mobile gaming TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS Lectures will consist of context setting, introductions to and explanations of relevant techniques and algorithms. Open discussions and references to reading material will frequently be used to widen the learning experience. The material covered in the practical sessions will reinforce the content covered in the lectures and will focus on developing the students game development and programming skills. Students will be directed to read sections of the recommended texts together with material from relevant Internet sites. They will be expected to consolidate the material after the lectures by private study.

4 ASSESSMENT The exact nature of the coursework will vary from year to year. Examples of typical coursework assessments that may be used to assess student learning include: Coursework 1: The first item of coursework may require the student to write a research paper summarising the current state relating to a specific area of the module content. This item of coursework will typically contribute to 20% of the overall coursework mark K1, K2, K3, T4 Coursework 2: The second item of coursework may require the student to design the communication architecture for an online application. This item of coursework will typically contribute to 30% of the overall coursework mark K1, K2, I1, I2, I3, P1, P3, T1, T2, T3 Coursework 3: The third item of coursework may require the student to create a complete network based application and implement the communication architecture created in the second assignment.
