An Introduction to Visual Tagging Ed Nabrotzky, CTO Andre Cote, SVP Business Development
Agenda 1. Introduction to Omni-ID & the market vision 2. Visual tagging basics & the value proposition 3. Review of components of a visual tagging system 4. Application examples 5. How do I get started? 2
The Global Asset Tagging Leader Rochester, NY Farnham, UK Qingdao, China Original patent holder and technology leader Broadest product line in the market today Unrivalled global footprint = anytime, anywhere support
Converging Market Trends E-paper costs achieving scale and acceptance Micro-energy networking achieving micro costs (energy, $$) Mobility devices and hosting exploding 4 Most importantly, our information based society is increasingly being driven by constant connections to visual data, moving away from static paper systems
Why Visual Information Is Powerful in a Workflow Historical impact of Toyota Production System (TPS) Enabled Toyota to become one of the ten largest companies in the world it is currently as profitable as all the other car companies combined Due to the success of TPS, virtually all manufacturing and many other sectors such as retail, health care and construction have implemented these principles Did You Know? Studies by educational researchers suggest that approximately 83% of human learning occurs visually, and the remaining 17% through the other senses - 11% through hearing, 3.5% through smell, 1% through taste, and 1.5% through touch. OSHA Occupational Safety & Health Administration U.S. Department of Labor 5
Visual Signals in Cyclic Processes Placing/tracking these signals electronically Reduces: - waste - wait time - inventories - variability Increases: - return on assets - transparency - quality - on-time delivery 2012 Omni-ID Inc. COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL Patent Pending
Core Applications of Visual Tagging in Manufacturing RTI Labelling Work Instructions Process Data Display Replace paper labels and stickers Auto flip pages based on position Pick by image Palletize group Replace traveller sheets of paper Display tasks by process step Operator confirmation Replace tickets and hand scrawls Digital signatures Capture data on asset in real time 7 Did You Know? Visual Tags also have all the traditional benefits of passive and active RFID for tracking, sensing, reporting and asset management
Other Applications Logistics dynamic labelling and tracking of containers/assets Health Care return on assets, quality of service Entertainment Analyze flow, give real time instructions Pharmaceutical/Food Clean room instructions and monitoring Transportation Airport and rail passenger process flow and instructions 8 Retail ESL, mobile carts, RTI and inventory
What is Visual Tagging? Placing OPERATOR READABLE instructions on a tag that can also be automatically identified take a passive, durable, RFID tag allow it to wakeup, share data with an active radio slave both to a small, intelligent micro-controller use the controller to update an e-paper screen do it all with almost unbelievably low power consumption Creating system software that enables effective application of the benefits to multiple processes Did You Know? ProVIEW tags from Omni are designed with a battery life of 5 7 years! 9
Variants of Visual Tags Graphic Display Tag Capable of changing each pixel dynamically, DPI, requires power source so is typically an active tag with radio and sensors Segmented Display Tag Can be defined with almost any number of segments, custom screen setup required, uses less power and can be done in active or passive formats (photovoltaic or RF harvesting) Color flag tag Use of bi-stable plastics and translucent overmolds to create passive RF tags that change color to show alert condition 10
Components of a Visual Tag Variations of existing protocols can be employed Logic is specific to the workflows targeted (domain expertise required) E-Paper Display Module Electrophoretic, bistable LCD and electrowetting are all display options, trade offs in cost and visibility Active Radio 433 MHz through 2.45 GHz are common/inexpensive, strong trade offs in speed, power and distance Protocol & Logic Power Source Passive RFID & Trigger Auto-ID and trigger from standard UHF readers important Lithium in coin cell or pouch form most effective Alkaline or energy harvesting options 11 Did You Know? ProVIEW uses a special protocol named CALL (Cyclic Asset Labelling and Locating), an extension of DASH7 for visual tagging
Durability is Key Drop 4 to concrete, 24x 4 drops on each corner, front and back Shake ASTM D (2012) Standard Test Method for Random Vibration Testing of Shipping Containers Impact 1m drop of ½ steel ball bearing and IZOD equivalent Water ingress IP65, suitable for spray wash down Temperature 0 85 C operating (below 0 screen does not update) Visibility 130 read angle, scratch/soiling resistance and replacement 12
Gateways, Readers and Triggers Visual Tagging Gateway UHF RFID Readers Trigger UHF Radio Signals MHz 13 Did You Know? ProVIEW tags from Omni are designed to be auto identified by UHF RFID Readers. Advanced users can also use standard readers to wakeup, flip pages or even change images on the Display Tag!
Simple Service Layer Access for Any Application Modern, Flexible API Software applications typically connect through web service interface Core objects built on Microsoft technology OPC UA server for SCADA systems Integrated SQL data base allows dynamic user defined API create an item and calls are auto supported to allow access Hosted locally or in cloud to manage data Supports connected devices for data interaction
Visual Tagging : How it works Many areas of an enterprise rely on moving assets Put gateways and triggers at process points Program information to assist operators and asset flow Gather data to tune process exact WIP at any time Set alarms to catch issues Send dynamic updates (ex. QA hold) in real time 15
Application Example 1: Automotive Supply Chain An assembly plant requires 890,000 returnable totes/racks -- cycling between 300 Tier1 parts suppliers 120,000 labels are printed and placed daily! Annual paper and consumables Maintenance of Printers & Equipment Labour for placement, scanning, removal Annual costs for paper labelling = $9,240,000 + Environmental impact of 36 million cards/labels being printed every year!! Direct ROI on printing = 16 months + benefits of tracking, data collection, inventory management, RTI shrinkage, QA enhancement 16
Application Example 2: Production Build Instructions Assembly plant makes a new appliance every 3 seconds! 15,000 manifests printed and placed daily in assembly Annual paper and consumables Maintenance of printers & equipment Labour for placement, scanning, removal Costs for paper labelling = $153,600 + Environmental impact of 4 million papers being printed every year!! Direct ROI on printing = 12 months + WIP tracking and QA improvements 17
Application Example 3: Logistics (Sortation) Postal sortation requires intermediate storage on carts Carts are labelled with paper work instructions and delivery codes Manual re-scheduling and updates are common ROI on paper replacement = 12 months + benefits of tracking, dynamic updates, data collection for service metrics 18
Application Example 3: Health Care Opportunity: improve asset utilization at hospitals finding and deploying monitors, scanners, dispensers, guerneys, wheelchairs etc. is an ongoing challenge knowing their state in real time (clean, calibrated, in-use etc) is important Solution: adding a trackable tag with readable instructions for staff Asset utilization increase of 40%! + use of unskilled labor proactively 19
Application Example 4: Yard Management Yards of many types are ideal for visual tags Dynamic placards gather data Asset History, Pricing, Attributes Customs information Sensor information Display information on the asset Next steps in delivery Clearance codes Contents list 20 Did You Know? ProVIEW tags from Omni are designed with integrated temperature sensors as a standard option and can be upgraded to retrieve motion, removal alarms or GPS locations if desired
21 Omni-ID Visual Tags
How Do I Get Started? Starter kit A great way to test and prepare Simple print driver available FAQ and Quick start guide Answers many questions on implementation Fully published API for programmers Sales@omni-id.com We can link you to a channel partner in your area/industry 22
