2 B3510 TRANSDUCERS AND INSTRUMENTATION TRAINERS The trainer is organized in a modular form and consists of a set of experiment boards. Each one can be easily identified by its alphabetical suffix. All the modules in this series have a similar appearance, they have a green fiberglass front surface on which are mounted the electronic components. Clear white silk-screen printing indicates the component positions, and functional blocks. The rear of each module has a strong protective cover. The outline of each of the experiment modules and relevant study topics is presented in the following pages. A concise list of the modules is presented below. The trainer includes a PC interface module (factory code B3510-Z), which can be interfaced with all the modules in the series to enable complex remote control and monitoring of simulated systems. For this scope a high-feature software package is available, the B3510-SW Transducer Lab Support and Simulation Software described in this section A unique power supply has been created for this series of boards, B3510-BU (factorycode B4191)). 4 B3510-A TEMPERATURE CONTROL The B3510-A board is equipped with four different types of commonly used temperature sensors (J-TC, NTC, PTC, Bimetallic switch). This allows an extensive and complete study of these devices and the circuits required for the conditioning of the signals produced by them. Open and closed loop temperature control conditions can easily be demonstrated and investigated. Industrial applications may also be simulated by interfacing this module with others in the B35 series, for example the B3510-Z PC interface board. 5 B3510-B R, L, C MEASUREMENTS The B3510-B board may be configured in many different ways (using jumper cords supplied) so that the student can study and investigate the procedures and circuits used to perform the measurements of resistance, capacitance and inductance. The unit also provides the facilities to study the set-up of AC and DC measurement bridges. 6 B3510-C LIGHT SENSORS AND LIGHT CONTROLS The B3510-C is a comprehensive module, which allows the study of the most common types of light sensors and control circuits. It is sub-divided into clearly identifiable areas to facilitate its use. The module includes one light source and drive circuit and three different types of transducers and their appropriate types of amplification circuits. Both on-off and proportional light control experimentation is possible. 7 B3510-D PROCESS SIMULATOR B3510-E PROCESS CONTROLLER The B3510-D and B3510-E are a pair of training aids to practically experiment the concepts which are subjects of any course on Automatic Controls Technology, from the basic to the most advanced ones. The value of these trainers resides in the capability to simulate systems with a great variety of transfer functions (first-order, second-order, non-linear systems) and then perform experiments and measurements which enforce the student s understanding of the theory. The B3510-D specifically deals with system simulation, while the B3510-E is a flexible system controller Both trainers are in the form of boards with components in view. Each functional block is clearly identified by silk print indications. 9 B3510-F STRAIN GAUGE The B3510-F is designed to allow the study of load and strain measurements using strain gauges. It consists of a balanced bridge set-up made of two extensometers and two fixed resistors. The bridge has a precision conditioning amplifier, both the gain and offset are adjustable to provide a precise strain-tovoltage conversion. The front face of the module is made of fiberglass. A U-shaped slot cut in the surface allows the concentration of elastic strain in the sensor area. A transparent plastic disc functions as a support for weights (not included), which may be used to apply a known strain to the transducers. 10 B3510-G DC MOTOR SPEED CONTROL The B3510-G module incorporates all the sub-systems necessary for the study of DC motor speed control in both open and closed-loop set-ups. The module has two small DC motors ganged together. One is used as the drive motor and the other as a tachometric generator. A slot-type optical feedback sensor is also mechanically ganged to a DC motor. The small motors ensure safe operation in all circumstances, this is important when the student has little experience. 2 small-size mechanically ganged DC motors. 11 B3510-H SOUND AND VIBRATION TRANSDUCERS The B3510-H module allows the study of commonly used acoustic and vibration sensors and transducers. The unit has a remote microphone and amplifier for increased flexibility during learning sessions. The on-board loudspeaker is provided to demonstrate many different principles of both sound reproduction and vibration generation. 12 B3510-I ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER APPLICATIONS This module consists of all the subassemblies required to study the transmission, reception and use of ultrasonic waves. The student can gain experience in the properties of US waves, and also easily study the Doppler effect extensively used in security systems. The functional blocks of the module are rationally organized and easily identifiable. 13 B3510-J POSITION CONTROL This module includes a geared DC motor (approx. 1 revolution per second), which operates a screw-driven mechanism, ganged to the slide of a linear potentiometer. A second linear potentiometer allows the setting the reference position. This set-up enables the student to study the benefits and limitations of a closed-loop position control system. 14 B3510-K VARIABLE-CAPACITANCE TRANSDUCERS This module includes two of the many different types of variable-capacitance transducers in industrial use, respectively a linear position transducer and an air humidity sensor. The signal from these sensors can be processed by combining the devices to the appropriate on board capacitance-tofrequency converter. The RH sensor is mounted on a remote micro-module for increased flexibility. Air Relative Humidity transducer Linear variable capacitance transducer (LVCT), a device made up of three coaxial metallic tubes. The outer fixed tube is a ground shield. The inner fixed tube forms one part of the capacitor armature, while the central tube, insulated from the first two is movable and acts as the second half of the armature of the variable capacitor The linear position of the sliding cursor is translated into a capacitance value and this, in turn, into a frequency value by means of an adjustable-frequency CMOS oscillator The B3510-K module comes complete with a connection cable kit and extensive instructions manual. 15 B3510-L ON/OFF SENSORS AND ACTUATORS This module is a collection of commonly used ON/OFF - input/output devices. The B3510-L allows the student to study the principle and use of these transducers. 17 B3510-N DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE TRANSDUCER This module includes an advanced solidstate, semiconductor-type transducer and facilitates the impression of given differential pressures for testing purposes. Adequate electronic interfacing circuits are also provided. The B3510-N is conceived to allow the student to study and gain experience in the use and limitations of these devices. 19 B3510-Q LINEAR VARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMER The B3510-Q module includes a LVDT device, which is now a widely used sensor for measuring distances. This device is a precision AC-driven transducer, used in the industry field to measure from a fraction of a millimeter, to several centimeters. The LVDT mounted on the module has a convenient positioning arrangement for the mobile part. This is in order to facilitate its use. 21 B3510-S AC MOTOR CONTROL The B3510-S module includes an AC micromotor and drive circuit. It is designed to allow the student to study the applications, principles and limitations of these transducers. The panel includes a variable-frequency, digital PWM sine/square signal generator that is used as a pilot signal for the power driver stage. The power driver stage produces the two voltages for the motor phases. An optical encoder is supplied to measure motor speed. 22 B3510-T STEPPER MOTOR CONTROLS The B3510-T module includes the step-bystep motor and the electronic drive circuit, to enable the experimentation and investigation of the SXS control technique and the typical characteristics of these motors. The motor is provided with a shaft position indicator. This facilitates the study of motor positioning, take-in point, loss of step. The electronic section includes a phasesignal generator and power drive stage. The motor can be operated manually in singlesteps or sequentially from an on-board clock generator. The module also includes a PC data link for full remote operation. A software package is provided with the trainer for this purpose. 23 B3510-U LEVEL MEASUREMENT TRANSDUCERS The B3510-U is consists of two sections, the first is the hydraulic part, which includes two small tanks and a level transducer unit. The second is an electronic module, which is interfaced with the sensing unit and includes the signal conditioners for the transducers. This training module facilities the study and experimentation of the most common techniques for liquid level measurement. Transparent plastic tank with three different level transducers. 25 B3510-Z PC INTERFACE MODULE The B3510-Z module performs a multiple teaching function within the B3510 series of trainers The unit demonstrates the architecture and organization of a microprocessor-based control system, which may be interfaced with the other trainers of the series to produce more complex systems. The trainer is used in conjunction with a PC, and creates an intelligent interface to the experiment modules, for the purpose of collecting data, pre-setting analog and digital outputs and sampling input terminals. It can also be used as a general-purpose microcomputer system to experiment software developed by the students. The B3510-Z is a module having all the components visible and accessible from the front face. Microcomputer unit, based around a CMOS microprocessor of the Z80 family, the Z84C RAM and EPROM and respectively 64k and 64kbits expandable to k Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter to implement a serial data link with the host PC 8 analog inputs, with multiplexer and A/D converter. The analog inputs are jumper-programmable to operate in the range 0-5V, 0-10V, -10 to +10V 8 digital inputs, TTL level 8 analog outputs, with D/A converter and demultiplexer. 26 B3510-SW - TRANSDUCER LAB SUPPORT AND SIMULATION SOFTWARE The B3510-SW is a versatile software package dedicated to the study of the B3510 series of training modules. A combination of the software loaded onto a PC and the B3510-Z PC INTERFACE MODULE connected via an RS232 cable allows the acquisition, displaying and printing of experimental data during the exercises. The software can also be used as a standalone (no hardware required) for the simulation of experiments thanks to a series of example experiment data files provided within the software package. The presence of the on-line Instruction Manuals of the B3510 series training modules makes the whole system an efficient PC based learning environment. 28 B3512 SERIES OF TRANSDUCERS MODULES WITH AMPLIFIERS FOR SIGNAL CONDITIONING Here is a series of small size boards, each one including a specific type of transducer and its interface circuit. The interface/conditioning amplifier supplies power to the transducer in the appropriate form (AC, DC, in direct or bridge configuration). It amplifies and linearizes also the transducer output, to match a standard measure range of 0-10V. The following transducers modules are available: B3512-A NTC temperature sensor (0 C to 100 C) B3512-B - PTC temperature sensor (0 C to 100 C) B3512-C Pressure sensor (0 to 0,5 PSI) B3512-D Light sensor (photo-resistor) B3512-E Light sensor (photo-transistor) All the modules are realized on a 100 x 80mm PCB, with the components in view and a clear silk-screen printing.
