2 R&D grants Background Grant funding is available at regional, national and European levels. This type of funding is designed to help expand business, develop assets and create jobs to maintain market leadership. Many SMEs or large groups miss grant funding opportunities either due to a lack of information, expertise in public funding requirements or time to prepare a grant proposal to a sufficiently high level that will maximise their chances of success. For 2014/2015, up to 536 million of grant funding was distributed to various businesses throughout the UK. The Regional Growth Fund (RGF) supports eligible projects that are raising private sector investment in the UK to create economic growth and employment. Since its launch in 2010 it has invested 2.85 billion to help local businesses grow and take on more staff across England. The European Structural Investment Funds (ESIF) is a new scheme that aims to promote innovation, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and contribute to a more sustainable society. Between 2014 and 2020, 6 billion will be distributed across the different regions within the UK.
