3 Introduction Let s start with the customary: we hope all is well with you this year. We are doing well here and are anxious for you to look through this year s catalog. We have been searching for new varieties to offer you and are really excited by some of the new opportunities for your gardens. Right now we are in the middle of one of the bigger droughts to hit our area in quite some time. The wildfires are making the sunsets somewhat apocalyptic each night. Fortunately, the nursery has a good water system and we are able to keep things in good shape despite the conditions around us. We will soon be back into the rainy season and wondering why it won t ever stop raining! But as strange as it seems given these current conditions, this is the time for planning and strategizing what you are going to do this fall and winter to help your garden grow and evolve. I am a fisherman and I will spend hours and hours tying up hooks and rigging in the fall preparing for the battles with fish during the coming winter and spring. This is the same if gardening is your hobby. Look over your landscape and find those spots in need of freshening and look for what plant will make the statement you have in your dreams. So it does not matter what your passion; prepare and your success rate and enjoyment are always going to improve. We have a couple new plants we want to draw your attention to: Hamamelis Strawberries and Cream is something you need to see. It is a bicolor flower with red purple petals tipped with yellow! Another new offering is strangely appropriate Quercus hypoleucoides. This evergreen oak is beautiful as well as being quite drought tolerant. We are also excited to have Aesulus Erythroblastos. This is a horse chestnut that has bright pink new growth. Finally we have a rhododendron we have not been able to offer until now. Rhododendron Yakushimanum Koichiro Wada FCC. It just might be the best rhododendron we have ever offered. Our plant is 4 feet by 6 feet after 45 years. It has wonderful deep green foliage with spectacular indumentum. As always there are many other new items coupled with many of our long term special plants. We hope you enjoy sorting through and deciding what you are going to do to make them work for you. And now for the corny, annual what are the Gosslers up to. This is a funny item we have considered leaving out; however, we have been told by many people they love the updates, so here we go. I just returned from my annual Alaska adventure. This is the fifth year I have gone and each has been very different and exciting. This year we saw a humpback whale come to the surface and spit out a common murre, a type of diving seabird. So, I would guess, there are not a lot of people out there who have seen a bird fly out of a whale s mouth. We also rescued two men stranded on an island in bad weather so we felt good about doing our maritime duty. Dawn is starting her 25 th year teaching and will be starting the new school year soon. Right now she and her good friend Pam Burns are exploring many new miles of trails on horseback in the coast and the Cascades. Pierce is getting ready to start his senior year in high school. He is in the middle of daily doubles for football and thinking it is a lot of work!! He is really looking forward to basketball this winter. We will be driving to football games and basketball games for the next 6 months. For those of you who remember the picture in the catalog of him standing in the clay pot in the garden as a 2 year old, you would

4 be surprised to know he is now 6 5 and 230 pounds. His foot won t even fit in the pot anymore! Marj and Roger just booked a trip this winter to Hawaii. Neither Marj nor Roger have ever been to Hawaii, they are looking forward to seeing many new sites. Marj is still golfing and bowling as much as she can. She went to Reno again this year to a bowling tournament with friends and had a great time. Roger is really enjoying the garden coaching. He is getting more appointments all the time. He loves seeing other people s gardens and helping them make their dreams for a beautiful landscape a reality. As for coming events this year, we will be selling at the Hardy Plant Study weekend in June in Salem, Oregon. We will be selling during the event at Seabright Garden. We will also be selling at Xera nursery in Portland this October 10th contact us or Xera nursery in Portland. We also held another successful dinner in the garden this year. This has been a great event and everyone seems to enjoy the opportunity to visit new gardens and enjoy good food and company. Thank you to Nancy Beck and Dave Taplan, Linda Lu and Hearn Moore for opening their gardens. This is held each July and if you want a great evening with some great people then start checking our website gosslerfarms.com for details or just contact us here at the nursery for dates and times. Check with us early spring as this event has been known to fill up. We always like to thank those in our lives that help make our business and personal lives better. Wayne Headlee is a wonderful neighbor and a great worker in the nursery. We are lucky to have him. Lisa Sebright works part time in the office and does most of the counting for inventory. Lisa helps greatly in taking some of the typing load off of Marj in the office. And finally, every year we need another set of eyes to look at the catalog for us and Diana Learner has been proofing the catalog for years she helps us put out a much better product for you to thumb through. Thank you Diana for your continued support and help. Enjoy your planting season: Eric Gossle Marj Gossler Eric Gossler Roger Gossler Marj Gossler
