7 The Challenge To guide thousands of PPCPs [without an EHR], through a timely selection and implementation process. How do we Actively engage and educate resource- and time- constrained small practices in a complex technology project? Manage 3 rd party consulting providers with varying skill- and experience- levels? Monitor all of this activity to deliver a consistent process across all consultants? Scale this effort to manage a project involving 7-regional partners and >60 individual consultants? Accomplish all of these tasks fast enough to survive ONC timelines and financial limitations??? 7

8 Finding a Solution How best to provide assistance to PPCPs with EHR selection and implementation? Should OHIP build or buy? OHIP s EHR Implementation & Workflow Work Group found the Welch Allyn Prep-Select Tool through a referral by one of our MD members. 8

17 Consulting Approach This tool helps organize what can be a very complicated process into something that s pretty easy to process in a step-by-step systematic fashion, Bruce Kleaveland says. Leverage EHR Prep-Select structured, web-tool to provide overall framework for project management, preparation, and selection Leverage program educational content to enable practice to make timely decisions, supported by consultant expert Keep project on steady, progressive track to EHR selection Guide workflow decisions to set the stage for a smooth implementation and go-live phase, post selection-decision Outline plan for MU submission, post go-live 17

18 Results Increased our confidence and reduced our anxiety re: selection Completed the EHR organization and prep process in 60-days Completed vendor evaluation, selection and contract negotiation 150-days after project initiation Selected e-mds, Ohio Health Information Partnership preferred vendor Low interest loan secured vetted by Ohio REC EHR Go-live: Friday, July 21 st Phase-I Meaningful Use Attestation: planned in Nov., this year We will attest to meaningful use for the Medicare incentive before the end of this year, Donna Johns says. The $44,000 from the government will not cover all of the costs. A practice should not do it for the money, but because it will help them improve the care they give the patient. 18
