2 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Facility management is the practice of coordinating the physical work environment with the people and work of an organization. This discipline integrates the principles of business administration, architecture, and the behavioral and engineering sciences. This certificate program furthers the understanding of this diverse field with an innovative series of courses focusing on design and management of facilities, from concept to installation, to long-term efficient use. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Professionals who are involved in the design or management of facilities, building operations, maintenance operations, construction, or occupational safety. Facilities professionals who wish to increase their knowledge in specific areas in preparation for the IFMA Certified Facility Manager (CFM) examination. CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS A certificate is awarded upon completion of 18 credit units (9 required and 9 elective credit units) with a grade point average of B or better. Participants will acquire a body of knowledge consistent with IFMA s underlying principles on facility management. Prepare yourself for one of the following IFMA designations: - The Facility Management Professional (FMP) designation is an entry-level, knowledge based credential geared towards FM s with less than five years experience. - The certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation is a competency-based certification recognized proficiency in all areas of FM. 3 CURRICULUM REQUIRED COURSES 9 UNITS Fundamentals of Facilities Management SOCECOL X499 (3 units) Get an overview of the principle duties of a facility manager. Learn the practical applications that will help you understand the business aspects of facilities management. Gain an understanding of the diverse responsibilities and decision-making processes from building infrastructure to fleet services. Acquire the insight needed to meet budget restraints while improving productivity, efficiency, and employee quality of life issues. Guest speakers and classroom workshops will help you master these skills. Facilities Design and Space Planning SOCECOL X499.1 (3 units) Master the successful applications of facilities design including defining the requirements of a project, developing design strategies, implementing corporate philosophies and methodologies, and understanding the Project Development Process. Gain the knowledge that will help you increase your confidence as a project leader and assure the success of your future projects. Whether you are managing multiple, small departmental relocations or anticipating a large project, these professional skills will assure you of greater success. Prerequisite: SOCECOL X499, Fundamentals of Facilities Management, OR familiarity with facilities planning and operations. Supervision for Facilities Professionals MGMT X (3 units) Facilities managers manage both facilities operations and personnel. Gain practical knowledge that can be used on the job to enhance your leadership skills and improve productivity. Explore topics that include: a supervisor's role within an organization, verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving techniques, managing a budget, strategic planning, ethics, and team development. If you supervise or manage within a facilities management organization or in an environment where technical, professional, or trades people are working, this course is for you. Recommended Prerequisite: SOCECOL X499 Fundamentals of Facilities Management or equivalent experience. Principles of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) ENGRMAE X429.1 (3 units) Gain practical knowledge on heating, ventilation, airconditioning and refrigeration systems as applied to building comfort systems. Enhance your knowledge of all aspects of HVAC-R systems. Explore topics that include thermodynamics, psychrometrics, forced air and hydronic heating systems. Facilities managers, building engineers, and maintenance and service mechanics will find this course of interest. A tour of the Central Plant at UC Irvine is conducted to inspect different refrigeration systems. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of mathematics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent experience. Fundamentals of Energy Management ENGRMAE X429.2 (1.5 units) This comprehensive, problem-solving forum will help facilities professionals gain a broad understanding of the latest energy cost reduction techniques and strategies. Enhance your knowledge of topics including energy auditing, high efficiency lighting system, motor technology, variable speed drive, energy conservation measures for HVAC systems, high CURRICULUM ELECTIVE COURSES 9 UNITS efficiency unitary equipment, energy management system, control strategies for energy conservation, and utility incentive programs. You will also learn about energy analyses of typical energy conservation measures using spreadsheet and bin weather methods. Interpreting and Analyzing Blueprints ENGR X441.1 (1.5 units) Learn how to read and understand construction documents for use in planning, and residential and commercial development. Understand orthographic projection and plan development; common drafting practices, dimensioning, typical symbols and abbreviations. Examine different types of plans such as floor plans, foundation plans, elevations, section details and schedule sheets. Mastering the symbolic language of these contract documents will help you to clarify work assignments. Uniform Building Codes ENGR X441 (3 units) Learn to use building codes to design safe and accessible environments and to create drawings that meet minimum plan checks requirements. Participants complete in-class exercises addressing ADA requirements, exiting requirements, occupancy groups, 3 07/06

4 construction types, energy conservation as required by Title 24, and minimum standards for fire-retardant materials. Other topics covered include the evaluation of real estate principles using basic code analysis, and the validation of finance budgets using estimates. Prerequisite: SOCECOL X499.1, Facilities Design and Space Planning, or equivalent experience. Facility Environmental Compliance SOCECOL X499.7 (3 units) Environmental compliance is good business practice. Learn an integrated approach to the day-to-day aspects of environmental compliance, regulatory reporting, and environmental risk reduction; as well as longer-term programs for achieving environmental compliance. The knowledge applies to manufacturing facilities, service and maintenance yards, automotive and transportation facilities, ports and shipyards, warehousing and distribution facilities, schools, medical buildings, highrise buildings, oil and chemical processing facilities, and governmental installations. Learn how environmental compliance affects the various media that are regulated. Prerequisite: A working knowledge of basic chemistry. Real Estate for Facilities Managers SOCECOL X (1.5 units) Facility Management (FM) professionals often deal with real estate considerations to maximize value for their organization. Increase your knowledge of the various roles and responsibilities of the facility manager in fulfilling these needs through lectures, readings, team assignments/case studies, and discussions with guest speakers involved in facilities management. Enhance your understanding of special considerations for site selection, utilities, entitlements, finances, and working with real estate brokers to meet organizational goals. Prerequisite: SOCECOL X499, Fundamentals of Facilities Management OR equivalent experience. Emergency Preparedness: Principles and Practices SOCECOL X (3 units) Gain an understanding of the concepts necessary for an organization to address in preparing for a natural or man-made catastrophic emergency event (fire, terrorist act, hazardous material spill, internal sabotage, etc.). Explore the practical steps for developing and organizing an effective emergency response plan. Learn about the practices and processes for protecting an organization's personnel and assets before and after an emergency event, including initial response; emergency operations center activation; business recovery; and facility and infrastructure restoration. Prerequisite: A basic understanding of the major functions within a business and/or non-profit organization. Emergency Preparedness: Business Continuity Planning SOCECOL X (1.5 units) Gain an understanding of the concepts necessary for an organization to address in preparing for a natural or man-made catastrophic emergency event (fire, terrorist act, hazardous material spill, internal sabotage, etc.). Explore the practical steps necessary to develop and test a plan to assure continuity of business operations. Learn about topics including: the components of a plan, including critical business processes; recovery location; required resources (equipment, software, and supplies); recovery teams and tasks; and vendor and customer contacts. Managing Indoor Air Quality SOCECOL X (1.5 units) Protecting indoor air quality is critical in occupational safety and health, and facilities design and management. Learn about the threats to healthy indoor air in homes, offices, schools, and buildings. Gain an understanding of the risks of chemical and biological attacks on air systems in buildings. Learn to develop plans to protect people in a building from airborne agents released by terrorists. Enhance your knowledge of the sources of pollutants, "sick building syndrome," factors affecting the effectiveness of ventilation systems, regulatory requirements, and program development. Introduction to Industrial and Commercial Fire Protection ENGRCEE X469.5 (3 units) Fire protection is a field that requires a broad spectrum of knowledge across multi-discipline principles. Gain an understanding of fire protection principles and their impact on industrial and commercial facilities to save lives and protect property. Enhance your knowledge of fire protection requirements for various types of commercial and industrial facilities. Learn how to evaluate fire hazards, conduct arson investigations, and recommend improvements to maximize life safety and minimize property loss. Prerequisite: A working knowledge of algebra with a basic understanding of formulas. Fundamentals of Safety and Health in the Workplace ENGR X (4 units) Gain an understanding of the safety engineering techniques and practical skills essential to safety professionals. Learn about topics including: biological stresses, hazard and exposure control, toxicology, property exposure and control, radiation, ventilation, life safety aspects of fire, hearing conservation, machine guarding, system safety, and environmental health. The workshop setting of this course features a 4 07/06

5 combination of lectures and open discussion, giving you the opportunity to clearly understand all material. Reading assignments and testing in class will also help you prepare for the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and the Occupational Health and Safety Technologist examinations. Prerequisite: Prior college preparation in algebra, trigonometry, and chemistry, OR successful completion of PhySci X420.7, Basic Math and Science Review Introduction to Communications and Networking EECS X490 (3 units) Increase your knowledge of the basic principles of data communications. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the following topics: analog and digital transmission, voice, video and data processing, open systems interconnect (OSI) model, client-server architectures, bridges and routers, local area and wide area networks, and modern state-of-theart technologies. An introduction to Ethernet, TCP/IP, other high-speed protocols, broadband communications, and wireless communications is also presented. Participants actively learn through case studies that provide "real-world" scenarios of modern data communication systems. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of mathematics and computers. 5 07/06

7 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING Millions of tons of hazardous materials are transported, stored, and used every year by millions of businesses throughout the United States. When such materials get out of their containers in an uncontrolled way, hazardous materials emergencies can result, which can result in property loss, environmental damage, injury, and death. There is also concern for terrorism aimed at facilities that handle hazardous materials. To the extent we know how to respond to such emergencies in a safe and effective manner, we can minimize the problems resulting from such releases. The following three courses are designed to train students in such skills. The course schedule varies based on public demand. The courses can be delivered at a company site to suit their scheduling needs. For more information, please call (949) Hour Handling Hazardous Materials Emergencies: Guidelines for First Responders SOCECOL X (1) This three-day course satisfies federal OSHA regulation 29 CFR (q) and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 5192(q) requiring all persons potentially involved in containing a hazardous material release or in evacuations to be trained at the First Responder- Operational level. Includes company personnel working with hazardous materials on site, firefighters and public works employees who may be called to the scene of a hazardous materials release and police officers potentially required to evacuate persons threatened by such a release. Topics include hazardous materials safety and toxicology orientation; spill discovery procedures; hazardous materials identification; required notification; Incident Command emergency management system introduction; containment methods; evacuation; shelter-in-place; field decontamination; disposal requirements; documentation; contingency planning; and ways to protect your workplace from haz mat threats. Optional certification at the First Responder- Operations level by the CSTI (the training branch of the Governor s Office of Emergency Services). 8-Hour First Responder-Awareness Training SOCECOL (0.7 CEU) This one-day seminar satisfies federal OSHA regulation 29 CFR (q) and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 5 192(q) requiring all persons potentially discovering a hazardous material release in the course of their job be trained at the First Responder-Awareness level. Includes company personnel using hazardous materials; city, county and special district employees who may discover a hazardous material spill or abandoned hazardous waste. Topics include a hazardous materials safety and toxicology orientation; procedures upon spill discovery; hazardous materials identification; required notification; and ways to protect your workplace from haz mat threats. Optional Certification by the California Specialized Training Institute (the training branch of the Governor s Office of Emergency Services). 8-Hour First Responder-Operations Refresher Training SOCECOL (0.7 CEU) Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations (Cal/OSHA) (q) requires all persons potentially involved in containing a hazardous material release or in evacuations be trained at the First Responder- Operational level and receive annual refresher training. This one-day seminar provides that training with review of hazardous materials safety and toxicology, spill discovery procedures, hazardous materials identification, required notification, review of Incident Command emergency management system, containment methods, evacuation, shelter-inplace, field decontamination, disposal requirements, documentation; contingency planning; and ways to protect your workplace from haz mat threats. Meets FR-O refresher training requirements. Curriculum is from CSTI (training branch of the Office of Emergency Services). Optional recertification by the California. Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) upon passing course and providing photocopy of original CSTI FRO certificate. Prerequisite: Handling Hazardous Materials Emergencies: Guidelines for First Responders, SOCECOL X ; or certification at FR-O level. 7 07/06
