1 Contributors Marika Dawkins is a doctoral student in the College of Juvenile Justice and Psychology at Prairie View A&M University, Texas, United States, where she is also a research and teaching assistant. She was born in Jamaica and moved to the United States in 2003 to pursue higher education. She earned an MS in juvenile justice and a BS in criminal justice from Prairie View A&M University. Her research interests are in delinquency, female offenders, competency in juveniles, the role of race and ethnicity in justice, and prevention programs for juvenile offenders. Her most recent publication on Texas gangs appeared in the Journal of Knowledge and Best Practices in Juvenile Justice. She has publications forthcoming on telemarketing fraud and international scams. Kingsley Ejiogu is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Administration of Justice, Texas Southern University, United States, where he has served as a research assistant for two years. He also interned with the Southwest Region of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Office of Hazardous Materials Enforcement, Houston, Texas. Prior to enrolling in the doctoral program, Kingsley worked for the Region of Peel in Ontario, Canada, on the development of wastewater media projects. Kingsley has 11 years of experience in ecology, environmental biotechnology and toxicology, environmental control, and waste water treatment research. However his interest in social and environmental justice across race, class and social stratifications stimulated his curiosity in the administration of justice. Kingsley has earned a BS in biology, an MS in biotechnology, and a postgraduate diploma in environmental control. He is a member of the American Society of Criminology. Gabriel Ferreyra-Orozco studied Law and Philosophy at the University of Michoacán, México. He practiced family and property law in Mexican courts for several years before moving to San Antonio, Texas, where he earned an MA in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Texas. He moved to Arizona to pursue his doctorate at the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University and is researching the Mexican federal judicial system and the challenges of the twenty-first century. His research interests include corruption in the judicial system in Mexico and drug trafficking between Mexico and the United States. Daniel E. Georges-Abeyie is a professor of Administration of Justice at Texas Southern University. Dr. Georges-Abeyie, affectionately known as Dr. Dan, to his students and colleagues, earned his doctorate in the Geography of Law, xviii

2 Notes on Contributors xix Crime, and Criminal Justice from Syracuse University. He has served as a professor and administrator at many of the most elite universities and colleges in the USA, including, but not limited to, the Graduate School of Criminal Justice, the State University of New York at Albany; Amherst College; the Pennsylvania State University; Arizona State University; Florida State University; and several universities within the California State University System. Dr. Georges-Abeyie has served as an Associate Dean, Interim Dean, Chair, Program Coordinator or Department CEO at more than seven colleges or universities within the USA. He is the author of several criminological theories, including the Theory of Petit Apartheid; the Myth of the Black Racial Monolith; and the Theory of Social Cultural Resistance: Afrocentrism. Camille Gibson is an associate professor of Criminal and Juvenile Justice at Prairie View A&M University, Texas, United States, where she serves on the faculty of the College of Juvenile Justice and Psychology. She is author of Being Real: Student Teacher Interactions and African American Male Delinquency, and Juvenile Sex Offenders: What the Public Needs to Know. She is the editor of the Caribbean Diaspora Crime Prevention Gazette. A native of Jamaica, Camille s research interests include Jamaican organized crime, juvenile interactions with law enforcement, schools and delinquency, domestic sex trafficking and child abuse in Jamaica. She has been examining the evolution of the justice system in Jamaica regarding its response to children. Mark Harris is a senior lecturer in the School of Law at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. He has worked as a lawyer representing indigenous Australians in both criminal law and land claim matters. He is the author of A Sentencing Conversation, an evaluation of the Koori (Aboriginal) courts created within the Australian legal system to deal with criminal matters. He has taught both in Australia and in the United States. He has published in the fields of indigenous rights, human rights, restorative justice, environmental law, and criminal justice. The comparative dimension of his work has seen him present at conferences throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Brazil. His current research focuses on the significance of water for indigenous peoples, involving a comparative analysis of social, legal, and environmental conditions in both Australia and Brazil. Louise Henry is a doctoral candidate in Juvenile Justice at Prairie View A&M, Texas, United States. A native of Jamaica, Louise has a BS in Education from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, and an MS in Juvenile Justice from Prairie View A&M University. Her research interests include bullying in schools, drugs and crime, migration and crime, and the experiences of illegal Jamaican immigrants in the United States. Devon Johnson is an associate professor of Criminal and Juvenile Justice at George Mason University, Virginia, United States. Her research focuses on public perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system, punishment

3 xx Notes on Contributors preferences, and police-citizen relations in the United States and abroad. Devon has received awards for her research from the American Association for Public Opinion Research and the Law and Society Division of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. She recently worked with the Ministry of National Security in Trinidad and Tobago to establish and evaluate a neighborhood community-oriented policing program, and with the US Department of Homeland Security to examine airport security. Prior to her appointment at George Mason, she was a research associate at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University and a research fellow at the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty at UCLA. Anita Kalunta-Crumpton is a professor of Administration of Justice at Texas Southern University, USA. She received a PhD from Brunel University, West London, United Kingdom. Prior to joining Texas Southern University in 2008, she taught for many years at a number of universities in England, United Kingdom. Her main research and teaching interests are in the areas of race, crime and criminal justice; drug use and trafficking; comparative criminology/criminal justice; and gender and crime. She has published extensively and her publications have appeared in a wide range of scholarly journals including the British Journal of Criminology, Social Justice, the International Journal of the Sociology of Law and the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. She is the author of Race and Drug Trials: The Social Construction of Guilt and Innocence (1999), Drugs, Victims and Race: The Politics of Drug Control (2006), the editor (with Biko Agozino) of Pan-African Issues in Crime and Justice (2004) and the editor of Race, Crime and Criminal Justice: International Perspectives (2010). Tammy Rinehart Kochel is an assistant professor in Criminology and Criminal justice at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, United States. Her research interests include policing reform, strategies and organization, correlates and outcomes of institutional legitimacy, and neighborhood collective efficacy. She has recently published in Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Policing, and Criminal Justice Policy Review. Her research projects have been sponsored by the Ministry of National Security for Trinidad and Tobago to study and reform the police service and by the US Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services to examine the co-implementation of community policing and Compstat. Prior to her academic appointment, she has worked on several US Department of Justice funded training and research initiatives, for the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, and has served as a correctional officer in a county jail. Daniel Míguez is a professor in Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of the State of Buenos Aires, and a researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research of Argentina. He completed

4 Notes on Contributors xxi his PhD in Anthropology from the Free University of Amsterdam. Since 1988 he has conducted research on education, religion and crime, and juvenile justice among the urban poor. His most recent publications include Delito y Cultura. Los Códigos de la Ilegalidad en la Juventud Marginal Urbana (2008) and Entre la Inseguridad y el Temor. Instantáneas de la Sociedad Actual (2010). Akwasi Owusu-Bempah is a doctoral candidate at the Centre of Criminology, University of Toronto. Akwasi s research interests are varied but focus mainly on the intersection of race, ethnicity, and criminal justice. His Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded doctoral research focuses on black males perceptions of and experiences with the criminal justice system in Canada. Akwasi s work has appeared in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society and the Journal of International Migration and Integration. He is the recent recipient of awards from the Association of Black Law Enforcers and the American Society of Criminology. James E. Palombo is a social worker, retired professor in Criminal Justice and Sociology, world traveler, and writer. He has a BA in Political Science, an MSW in social work, an MA in Criminal Justice, and a PhD in Criminal Justice Management. He has taught nationally and internationally for over 25 years, and worked at community programs for over 30 years. He is currently involved with projects in the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, and, as his contribution to this book demonstrates, he is particularly interested in ideological considerations tied to the American experiment. He is the politics editor at Ragazine.cc and his latest book is titled Criminal to Critic Reflections Amid the American Experiment. James divides his time between San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Endicott, New York. Fernando Urrea-Giraldo is a full professor in Sociology at the Social Sciences Department, Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia. Fernando is a sociologist and in the past 15 years has researched on ethnic-racial inequalities in Latin America, particularly in relation to the black and Indian populations. He has several published studies on ethnic-racial inequalities in Colombia in a comparative perspective with other countries of the region. His areas of research include sociodemographic differentials and socioeconomic inequalities of the black and Indian populations versus the white-mestizo population, racial discrimination and violence in the lives of black people in Colombia. He also studies the intersections of social class, race, ethnicity and sexuality in the region, and in particular the changes in masculinities and femininities of black and Indian people from different social classes in comparison to their white- mestizo counterparts. He has been a consultant for Colombia s national statistics institute (Departamento Nacional de Estadística, DANE) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on issues of ethnic-racial statistics. He is the coordinator of the elective course, Sociology of Race, in the sociology program at Universidad del Valle.

5 xxii Notes on Contributors Scot Wortley is a professor at the Centre of Criminology, University of Toronto since In 2007, he was appointed by Metropolis Canada to the position of National Priority Leader for research on Justice, Policing and Security. Scot also recently served as the research director for two major government commissions exploring youth violence in the Canadian context. His current research projects include a study investigating the extent and nature of street gangs in Toronto; two studies investigating the effectiveness of specific gang intervention/gang prevention programs operating in the Toronto area; a general population survey examining the extent of criminal offending and victimization in Jamaica; a general population survey of Toronto residents that is examining racial differences in perceptions of and experiences with the Canadian criminal justice system; and a study examining racial profiling and police use of force in Ontario. He has published in various academic journals and recently published an edited volume on Crime and Criminal Justice in the Caribbean with researchers from the University of the West Indies.
