3 Welcome to Eastman Aviation Solutions Eastman Aviation Solutions is dedicated to developing the advanced aviation lubricant expertise your company relies on. The programme is made up of 8 modules covering all aspects of the aviation industry from identifying aeroplane types to engine operation. The module questions can be taken in any order and at a pace which suits both your available time and learning speed. On completion of the Eastman Aviation Solutions Academy, you will receive a certificate in recognition of your achievement. 4 Overview 1.0 In Turbo Oil and its applications this module, we discuss topics relating to Turbo Oil and their many applications. We start by defining what a lubricant is, and what it does. We then proceed through the module looking at the history of lubricants in the aviation industry, Turbo Oil composition through other topics to detailed diagrams of Gas Turbine Machinery: When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Understand what a lubricant is and the differences between Mineral and Synthetic Oil ~ ~ Describe the composition of Turbo Oil, its applications, characteristics and functions ~ ~ Reference and utilise a list of equipment that is lubricated by Turbo Oil 02

7 2.0 In BP Turbo Oil products this module, we discuss the broad range of Turbo Oils that are produced by Eastman. We take an in depth look at BP Turbo Oil 2197 and its many operator benefits, as well as BP Turbo Oil 2380 through to BP Turbo Oil 25. In each section we discuss their suited applications, their benefits and which specifications (both military and civil aviation) they have passed. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Recognise the difference between several different types of BP Turbo Oil, and describe what application each is best suited for ~ ~ Understand the specific benefits to each BP Turbo Oil ~ ~ Describe the composition of Turbo Oil, its applications, characteristics and functions ~ ~ Reference a list of specifications that each oil has been approved against, including superseded specifications 05

8 Overview 3.0 In Turbo Oil cross reference table this module, we will look at a high level of a number of aviation Turbo Oils from different companies, which fall into viscosity categories of 3, 4, 5 and 7.5 centistrokes. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Understand that there are several competitive Turbo Oils within the market place and which competes with what ~ ~ Recognise that even within viscosity grades there will be a variation in performance due to the unique composition of Turbo Oils 06

11 4.0 This Specifications and approvals module covers the myriad of military specifications in depth, with an overview of current relevant UK and US military specifications. We then proceed through the module looking at the approval process for Turbo Oils, the dates of approval of relevant Turbo Oils and also trends in Turbo Oil development. Finally, we look through the key approval status for BP Turbo Oil 2197, covering equipment that it has been approved for use with. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Describe the different specifications and which Turbo Oils that they apply to ~ ~ Recognise the approval process for Turbo Oils ~ ~ Understand, in detail, the AS5780 specification ~ ~ Describe trends in Turbo Oil ~ ~ Reference parts with BP Turbo Oil 2197 Key Approval status 09

12 Overview 5.0 In Competitive advantages this module, we discuss the Competitive Advantages that BP Turbo Oils bring to an operator over other Turbo Oils. We look at BP Turbo Oil 2197 and BP Turbo Oil 2380 and their results compared to the competition and then we move on to discovering why their performance is so good. We move through the module covering Cyclic Coker Mister tests, the effects of HTS on Silicone seals through to the Volume / Tensile changes in Fluorocarbons in relation to HTS/STD use. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Describe the benefits of BP Turbo Oil 2380 & 2197 ~ ~ Understand why BP Turbo Oil 2380 & 2197 have superior performance ~ ~ Recognise compatibility issues with HTS/STD oils ~ ~ Understand, in detail, the AS5780 specification ~ ~ Describe the Cyclic Mister tests 10

15 6.0 In Examples of value study results this short module, we cover topics relating to the performance of BP Turbo Oil 2197, confirming its best-in-class abilities via numerous routes of data gathering. We also cover in detail the Operator benefits from using BP Turbo Oil When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Describe and discuss the ways in which data is gathered on a Turbo Oil, and how Eastman gathered data for the performance of BP Turbo Oil 2197 ~ ~ Understand the specific operator benefits BPTO

16 Overview 7.0 In Oil servicing conversion and monitoring this module, we discuss several topics in relation to Servicing, converting and monitoring Turbo Oil. We begin by covering the compatibility of Turbo Oils, their stages of degradation and also the reasons why Turbo Oil may undertake a colour change. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Understand compatibility of synthetic lubricants and the degradation of Turbo Oils ~ ~ Describe the typical misconceptions about Turbo Oil ~ ~ Explain types of contamination and how to handle them ~ ~ Use servicing practices and monitoring methods to have an overview of the lubricant engine relationship 14

19 8.0 In Storage and handling this module, we discuss several topics in relation to Storing and Handling Turbo Oil. The module begins by covering a broad overview of stocking Turbo Oils and other aviation fluids. We then continue to cover Re-packing Guidelines, the Shelf life of BP Turbo Oils and how they can be extended. The module concludes with details of Turbo Oil packaging and measurements. When you have completed this module you should be able to: ~ ~ Understand compatibility of synthetic lubricants and the degradation of Turbo Oils ~ ~ Describe the typical misconceptions about Turbo Oil ~ ~ Explain types of contamination and how to handle them ~ ~ Use servicing practices and monitoring methods to have an overview of the lubricant engine relationship 17
