2 Mission Statement - is a national and international research and service institute, supported by the Philipps University in Marburg. Its mission is to collect, index and make available photographs related to European art and architecture, as well as to conduct research on the history, practice and theory of how visual cultural assets are passed on, especially the accompanying transformation process as it relates to the media, the conditions of storing knowledge in visual form, and the significance to society of remembering visual culture. With its roughly 1.7 million photographs,foto Marburg is one of the largest image archives on European art and architecture. Through the cooperative structures it has established, Foto Marburg supports the documentary work being done at museums, offices for the protection of historic monuments, libraries and research institutes. The Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum serves publishing houses, editorial offices, scholars and all other interested parties by publishing the pictorial material and the indexing data of its more than 80 partner institutes.

3 Inventory of the Image Archive was founded in 1913 by art historian Richard Hamann. Since its founding, the Image Archive has had the responsibility of making, collecting and caring for documentary photographs from the field of art history and making them available to scholars, scientists and the general public in as high a level of quality as possible. The inventory has now grown to around 1.7 million photographs on glass plates and films in every format, for the most part in black and white, but also including some in color. The focus is on art and architecture in Germany and Europe. The inventory of and the inventory of more than 80 other cultural facilities can be viewed on the internet since 1999 using the image database Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur. 6 Research At the focus of the research conducted by the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte is the history, practice and theory of how visual cultural assets are passed on, especially the accompanying transformation process as it relates to the media, the conditions of storing knowledge in visual form, and the significance to society of remembering visual culture. These are also connected to general questions concerning image media, especially in modern times, to the conditions and possibilities of the interpretation of visual testimony, and finally, to the basic question regarding the status and purpose of that which must be understood as "art".

7 Research Most of the research projects are funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG-"German Research Foundation"). The IT department of is actively involved in cultural informatics projects and standardization work for the museum community on German and international level, together with the German Museum Association, ICOM-CIDOC, and other stakeholders like the Getty. Recently the main focus has been the development, implementation and advancement of LIDO Lightweight Information Describing Objects, carried out within CIDOC, supported by ATHENA project. LIDO is the international harvesting standard for museums.
