Trade show hints, tips, & tricks. Dear Mary Jane, It's Trade show season! That means you and your business will be pulling the display boards, folding tables, and information booklets out of storage. Dusting them off and getting them ready for the road. The wonderful thing about a trade show display, is that it doesn't have to be hidden away when you're not touring with it. It can become the back drop for your office, an eye catching display in your store or a portable shop for weekly markets or events. In our Kentville office our trade show display doubles as a room divider. The possibilities are endless. Aside from providing a great product, you also offer some of the best customer service I have ever received. You coming out to install the wall decal on a Friday night; Tristan's absolutely positive attitude and cheerfulness whenever he works on a project for us... you just don't get this everywhere. 3 to 6 months before the Trade Show: Create a "Main Message" Come up with something that catches the eye of the passers by. Try not to be too predictable. Pick your Spot Booths sell quickly. Look at the booths that are sold. You don't necessarily want to be next to direct competitors. Aisles can be cramped, while corners seem to have more breathing room and are often visible from two sides. Plan your crew Don't try to do it alone. You should have at least two people in the booth for busy times. Adding a third person to the crew allows for breaks, and having someone moving around the trade show floor, and working people in the aisles. 4 4 of 8 8/8/2012 9:51 AM Use social media. Promote not only yourself, but the show itself and other vendors. Get your name on other peoples facebook and twitter pages. This kind of linking is often returned in kind. Add a line in your signature with a link to the show website and information about when and where. Set up meetings This is a good chance to have face time with other vendors, potential clients, and industry people during off hours at the show. Be proactive. Create a tool box Like a good scout, come prepared for the unexpected. Because you just never know. See Below. The Day of the Show: Ask questions rather then pitch This isn't a car lot. Approach customers with conversation. Avoid the yes/no questions too. The more you can get them talking the more you'll learn. Stand -Simple but effective It makes you look like you want to be there. You're looking forward to talking to people as they pass. Make eye contact as they walk by. Leave your booth Get out there and mingle. Talk to people in the aisles, invite them to come and see your work. Personal contact is effective.

5 5 of 8 8/8/2012 9:51 AM LCD Screens We've all been distracted from conversations in our house when the TV is on. It's no different at a show. It piques curiosity and also allows you to cram a lot of content into your space without being cluttered. Be able to Demo Have products on hand that people can touch and try. Show people how things work and why they're unique. Take Notes On business cards, a little personal message to help them remember who you are. And at the end of your day, when you have a box filled with other peoples cards, the little notes you've made will help you remember them. Don't be a "sales guy" People don't want to talk to a sales rep. Show them the inside scoop. Allow them to connect to your business on a personal level. Let them feel like they're "In the Club". Don't depend on the Internet We've all been stuck mid presentation without our "clip" or "site" to make our point. Be ready to go offline... gracefully.
