12 Head Coach Anthony Jones Anthony Jones will enter his 14 th season as a head coach and the 12 th as the leader of the AAMU Bulldog football program. In 2006, Jones led the Bulldogs to their first SWAC title and tied the school record with nine victories. The Bulldogs posted back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2005 and The 2006 SWAC Coach of the year has led A&M to five SWAC title games in ten seasons and enters the 2012 campaign with a career record. With his record while at Alabama A&M, Jones ranks second among all coaches in wins Alabama A&M history. His.620 winning percentage stands four points behind the legendary A&M coach Louis Crews, who won 64 percent of his games over 16 years leading the Bulldogs. Jones 79 wins at A&M rank second all-time behind Crews, who won 93 games at A&M. In 2005, Jones led the Bulldogs to their second SWAC East Championship under his reign, and a 9-3 record. The nine wins also earned Jones a milestone victory in the regular season finale, a win at Prairie View served as the 50th win in Jones career. The 2012 season saw the Jones squad start 6-0 for the first time during his 12 year career on The Hill. The 6-0 start was the first for AAMU since the 1966 team that was lead by Louis Crews. That year also saw the Bulldogs ranked as the 25 th team in the football championship Subdivision. A&M also was ranked second for seven weeks in all three HBCU polls. The Maroon & White would unfortunately finish 6-4 with losses to Alcorn State during homecoming and the Magic City Classic. After the Bulldogs posted tremendous 8-4 records in each of his first two seasons in 2002 and 2003, the team from the Rocket City capped off another outstanding season in 2004 with a 7-4 mark. With a 21-7 victory in the Magic City Classic Jones is 7-1 in his eight seasons against in-state rival Alabama State. The 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 teams also captured the John Merritt Classic title, defeating Tennessee State in the seasonopener. Alabama A&M remains the only visiting team to have beaten Tennessee State in the John Merritt Classic s history. Twice, Jones has led A&M to six-game winning streaks in his tenure. After two early losses in 2002, Jones Bulldogs won six straight and eight of nine to finish the regular season. The Bulldogs captured the SWAC East (6-1). This led to A&M s second berth in the SWAC championship in three years. In 2005, after a disappointing Homecoming loss to Texas Southern, the Bulldogs regrouped and won six straight games to finish the regular season en route to another SWAC East title and a berth in the SWAC Championship game. The 2009 season saw three two game win streaks and victories over Jackson State (13-5) and Mississippi Valley (17-12) in the final two contest of the season to earn Jones his fourth SWAC East championship and title game appearance where the Maroon & White fell to Prairie View A&M. Last season Jones took his (3-8) 2010 squad and changed them into the 2011 Eastern Division champions advancing to their fifth conference championship contest. That year also marked seven straight victories for the Bulldogs after starting the season 0-2. The streak, noted as a first in Jones history, also included three television appearances, his 90th career victory and his eighth career Magic City Classic victory. Jones was named SWAC Coach of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Jones arrived at Alabama A&M from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent four years. After serving as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach in his first year with the Maroon Tigers, he was promoted to head coach in After going 2-8 in his first season, Jones led the Tigers to the first back-to-back eight-win seasons in school history. He was named SIAC Coach of the year both times. The 2000 campaign (8-3) qualified him and the Tigers as the second-most improved team in NCAA Division II. Following his second consecutive eight-win season (8-2), Jones was one of three finalists for the 2001 Eddie Robinson Coach of the year Award along with Doug Williams (Grambling State) and Rick Comegy (Tuskegee). He was a finalist again in 2002, his inaugural season at AAMU when he became just the second coach in AAMU history to win the Magic City Classic and Homecoming in his first year as head coach (Ray Bonner in 1992). He was named to the Eddie Robinson Coach of the year Award in 2011 for the work he did during his tenth season. Jones is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He played college football at Wichita State University for Willie Jeffries, where he earned several honors as a tight end, including the Ben Hustle Award (1981), and All-Missouri Valley Conference (1983). Following his senior season with the Shockers, Jones went on to play for the Redskins in the National Football League, where he helped Washington win the 1987 Super Bowl. The Redskins traded him to the San Diego Chargers during to the 1988 season, but Jones was forced to retire after suffering a knee injury before the next season. In 1991 Jones joined the staff at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland, where he served as the receivers/tight ends coach. Jones moved to South Carolina State University in 1992, where he rejoined his mentor, Willie Jeffries, as a defensive assistant. In 1993, he was promoted to offensive coordinator at SCSU, a position that he held until his departure for Morehouse in In 1994, SCSU won the MEAC title and earned the Black College National Champions following a win over Grambling at the Heritage Bowl. 16 Game 1 A&M 23 vs. Grambling 9 Aug. 31, 2013 Eddie G. Robinson Grambling, LA. 7,498 Normal Head coach Anthony Jones moved one step closer to his to 100th victory career by claiming only his second win at Eddie G. Robinson stadium 23-9 over Grambling State. As with any first contest there were a number of penalties as both teams combined for 18 flags. The Bulldogs collected nine of those for 131 yards. Our young people played really well, said Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones, whose lineup featured 15 new starters, plus a new punter and kicker. We made some mistakes but overall they played well, well enough to get the victory, Jones said. Now what we re going to try to do is fix the mistakes that we made and get ready for the next one. The game started fast as A&M forced a fumble on GSU s first play of David Dagrin popped the ball out of Grambling s Juwan Martin hand as he was being wrapped up by a host of Bulldogs. Senior Derrick Harris then jumped on it the secure the first turnover for the Maroon & White defense. AAMU was unable to capitalize on the situation as the offenses first four plays accounted for no yards. The first quarter would end in a scoreless tie after 29 plays were run by both teams with neither getting in the end zone. The one positive note was punter Rashad Anderson who had already collected a whopping 101 yards with his foot. His final punt of the first half pinned the Tigers on their one yard line. The second half started on a second and nine situation for Grambling which resulted in an incomplete pass that was broken up by newcomer Quentin Parks. Alabama A&M s first points of the new season came on the next play as Robert Nelson tackled the Tigers running back in the end zone for a safety giving A&M their first lead of the year 2-0. We had a lot of kids that stepped up tonight and played well, defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns. It started with the D-line. (Anthony) Lanier did a good job on pass rushing, also (Reginald) Bailey. The whole front line did a great job. The secondary played well for the first game out, with some new people. That score led to the Bulldogs first touchdown which came after an eight play 33 yard drive that saw Ball State transfer Barrington Scott dive into the end zone to push the lead to 9-0. Grambling would finally get on the board with a 20 yard field goal on the very next drive. Knowing he would feel comfortable with a bigger lead the Jones led squad grabbed an interception from Grambling when senior Tremaine Shepherd picked the ball off over the middle. AAMU then scored another touchdown when Brandon Wells connected with tight end Toriono Upshaw for their first TD of the year. The score gave AAMU a 16-3 lead at half-time. On the first drive of the new half A&M used a seven play 78 yard drive to add to their lead Wells once again found a receiver this time it was Montauirus Smith who caught a 24 yard score for his first touchdown. GSU finally found some life after Wells threw his first interception. That turnover led to their first TD of the year when J. Runner found the end zone for a four yard score. A&M then ran the ball for the final two and a half minutes and secured Jones 98th career win, 80th Bulldog victory, first in the month of August and first of the 2013 season. The win was Jones second ever in the iconic stadium and second straight in Grambling. Starting quarterback Brandon Wells proved he was ready finishing 15 of 28 with two touchdowns and a pick. Wells also picked up 28 yards on nine carries. Barrington Scott rushed the ball 16 times for 77 yards and a score while Brandon Eldemire collected 21 yards on 10 rushes. Nelson finished the game with seven tackles, three for a loss of four yards and a safety. Anderson ended his first collegiate game punting for 202 yards averaging 40.4 with three being pinned in the 20 yard line. His longest was 58 yards. Grambling was led by Nicholas Peoples who secured 10 stops for and a sack for seven yards. Cedric Skinner rushed for 73 yards while quarterback D. J. Williams ended the game six of 20 for 62 yards. A&M now prepares themselves to play in-state rival Tuskegee University in the fourth annual Louis Crews Classic and 22nd Hall of Fame game. 17 Game 2 A&M 7 vs. Tuskegee 23 Sept. 7, 2013 Louis Crews Stadium Huntsville, Ala. 13,267 NORMAL In what was a tough battle in Birmingham last season turn into a man handling this year. The Tuskegee Golden Tigers scored two straight touchdowns within the first six minutes of action in route to their first Louis Crews Classic victory A&M could not find any offense as starting quarterback Brandon Wells went 18 for 37 for 217 yards and 35 on the ground after 10 attempts. Barrington Scott rushed the ball 16 times but accumulated only 22 yards. Montaurius Smith led the receiving corps with five receptions for 59 yards, while Terrance Pride totaled five catches for 56 yards. "We had our chances but mistakes doomed us," head coach Anthony Jones mentioned. Of the 12 drives the Bulldogs saw, the first two ended in fumbles, six ended in punts, two finished on downs while a missed field goal and the lone touchdown rounded out the Bulldogs offense in their second contest of After the quick start by the Tigers, AAMU had to regroup and put a drive together. Although they were able to produce a six and seven play drive both ended in punts. Tuskegee, on the other hand, would then score a 34 yard field goal to push the score in their favor 17-0 at halftime. AAMU did have a few bright spots in the first half as senior Derrick Harris ended one of TU's drives with his first interception of the year. The second half started with drives by both teams ending in punts and a Maroon & White missed field goal. A&M had a chance when a Tuskegee punt was shanked and landed one yard from the line of scrimmage giving AAMU the ball on the visitor's 29 yard line. But after seven plays they still could not add points to the scoreboard as Cesar Ramon missed his first field goal try of the year. The Anthony Jones led squad finally got on the board after a nine play 60 yard drive that saw Scott score his second TD of the season producing a score of 17-7 going into the fourth quarter. The boy's in Maroon never gave up throwing the ball and running with authority throughout the game but the Tigers were on point looking like a team that had played multiple contests and not their first. Tuskegee would add another score when Justin Nard connected with Marque Gardner for 56 yard touchdown that sealed the deal for the Tigers first win over A&M since 2008 and first by any visiting team in the four year old Louis Crews Classic. The Tigers QB Nard went for 206 yards and a touchdown. Rashad Burkett led TU in rushing with 33 yards on three tries. Quavon Taylor secured 12 tackles for the Maroon & Gold. The Maroon & White will regroup and now get ready to hit the road for two straight weeks of contests first in South Carolina for a date with the Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Saturday, September 14. 18 Game 3 A&M 0 vs. South Carolina State 32 Sept. 14, 2013 Oliver C. Dawson Orangeburg, SC. 11,146 NORMAL The Alabama A&M Bulldogs could not find any scoring as the fast paced Bulldogs of South Carolina State blanked them 32-0 Saturday night in Orangeburg, South Carolina. "When you play a young team you never know how they are going to play," said head coach Anthony Jones. "In the same regard we can't keep using we are young three games into the season, we have to grow up." The Bulldogs used three different quarterbacks in hopes of putting points on the board. Starting QB Brandon Wells threw two interceptions and was sacked three times before being replaced by the strong arm Jaymasion (Jamma-son) Lee. Lee played most of the time finishing his first division one contest 13 of 34 for 187 yards and a pick. California native Chris Leachmen connected one time with a receiver after three attempts. Barrington Scott led the team in rushing with 40 yards on 16 carries, his second straight game with that number of rushes. Scott also caught three passes for 45 yards with a long of 31. Junior Montaurius Smith led all receivers with five receptions for 77 yards. A&M did have a record tying player as Robert Nelson tied Johnnie Baldwin and Lionel Macklin with 17 tackles in a game. "It's a great accomplishment but we lost the game so it doesn't feel as good as it should," said Nelson. "I tried to fly around and make as many plays as I could. The defense did well as a whole, everybody worked hard." For the third straight game Rashad Anderson collected over 200 yards punting posting 292 on eight carries averaging His longest was 55 yards with two landing inside the 20 yard line. Corey Johnson also totaled a career high with 10 tackles. Only two of the Maroon & Whites drives went double digit plays. Lee's drive right before halftime was ended on a Scott fumble. The second double digit drive ended when the Bulldogs went for it on fourth and goal and was stopped short. SCSU was fast from beginning to end never huddling, lining up and running plays as soon as the previous one ended. The South Carolina State Bulldogs scored 13 points in the first quarter, seven in the second and 12 in the third to claim their first victory in SCSU's Richard Cue went 9 for 19 for 147 yards and a touchdown. Eight different players ran the ball for the Bulldogs totaling 238 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Their leader was Dondre Brown who secured 64 yards on 12 carries. Nick Belcher posted nine points with his foot going 3 of 4 on field goals. This is the second straight contest A&M has been held under 200 passing yards and under 100 yards rushing. "We traveled more players and played a few but it didn't help us today," Jones mentioned. "We cranked things up in practice this week in order to mimic what we were going to see." "We will go back to practice next week and get things cleaned up and get ready for our conference play." Although the Maroon & White have only scored seven points in the last two games they are still 1-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. That part of the schedule begins next Saturday, September 21st when they travel to Houston, Texas to face the Prairie View A&M Panthers. 19 Game 4 A&M 26 vs. Prairie View A&M 28 Sept. 21, 2013 Blackshear Stadium Prairie View, TX 4,457 PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Brandon Eldemire sat on a sofa at the Alabama A&M football offices earlier in the week and assured that "we have plays that will work if we'll just execute them the way we're taught." For three quarters of the game, that execution was evident. But a fruitless third quarter that led to 21 unanswered Prairie View Points points and a pair of missed point-after kicks were the difference in the Bulldogs' loss to the Panthers Saturday night, the Bulldogs' third consecutive defeat. Alabama A&M (1-3 overall, 1-1 in the SWAC) hosts winless Texas Southern next Saturday. It was a breakout night for the A&M running game, with Eldemire rushing nine times for 154 yards and Barrington Scott adding 128 yards on 23 carries, both scoring a touchdown. Jaymason Lee, in his first start at quarterback, was 15-for-28 for 224 yards and two touchdown passes, to Demario Ross and Jonathan Dorsey. However, after Eldemire and Scott scored first-period TDs, freshman kicker Cesar Ramon missed both PATs. Owning a 12-0 lead at halftime, A&M failed to recover an onside kick to open the third period, leading to a Prairie View TD. After the Bulldogs went three-and-out on their next two possessions, Prairie View answered with touchdowns, taking the lead for good. A&M had two fourth-quarter possessions while trailing 28-26, one with only 56 seconds remaining, but both ended in interceptions. "Our mistakes ended up being the difference in the game," said coach Anthony Jones. "We played extremely well in the first half and came back out in the second half and weren't able to stop them a couple of times and they used that momentum to propel them on to victory." Jones refused to place the blame on the missed PATs, saying, "If we had better overall special teams play, it would have made a difference. We kept ourselves backed up (in field position) because of lack of special teams play. That's what happens." A&M was able to shrug off a shanked punt and a blocked punt in the first when Lawrence Barnett intercepted a Prairie View pass. Eldemire broke off a 51-yard run from deep in Bulldog territory, setting up Scott's 15-yard scoring run at 3:19 of the first. The defense forced a quick Panther punt and Eldemire escaped for a 67-yard scoring run with 30 seconds left in the first. Prairie View's Deauntre Smiley scored on a pair of TDs runs that sandwiched a poor A&M possession, taking a lead, then Jerry Lovelocke capped an 80-yard drive with a TD pass to Courtney Brown and a cushion. "We missed tackles," Jones said. "That was the bottom line and their kids did a great job of running through our tackles. We were there but we couldn't them to the ground when we needed to." After the teams swapped touchdown passes, leaving the Panthers up 28-19, Lee marched the Bulldogs 66 yards in seven plays, connecting with Ross with 6:35 to play. Puente's PAT made it Prairie View then made two strong defensive stands to keep A&M out of field goal range, both series ending in interceptions. Key Points The 26 points tie the season high. All 30 of A&M's points have come in the second and third quarters. The 12 and 14 are the first points of the season in the first and fourth quarters. This was the first lead the Maroon & White gave up all season. This was the first loss for AAMU vs. PVAMU in the month of September. The 501 yards was a first in 2013 for the Bulldogs. This was the first game A&M has recorded 227 yards rushing. 224 is the most passing yards A&M has collected this season. First time A&M has recorded two players with 100 or more rushing yards. Barrington Scott 125 and Brandon Eldemire 154. First 100 yard receiving game for any Bulldog receiver in Montaurius Smith finished with seven catches for 100 yards. 20 Game 5 A&M 12 vs. Texas Southern 10 Sept. 28, 2013 Louis Crews Stadium Huntsville, AL 7,257 NORMAL It wasn t pretty and it wasn t the best way to win but it was a win as the Alabama A&M football team claimed victory over the Tigers of Texas Southern Saturday evening. Although Jaymason Lee started the game at quarterback it took Brandon Wells to win the contest as he scored the game winning run. Lee went nine of 23 for 90 yards while Wells finished two of three for 33 yards. Montaurius Smith caught seven balls for 52 yards to lead A&M in the receptions category. Running back Barrington Scott rushed the ball 22 times for 85 yards setting up Brandon Eldemire who carried the ball six times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Free safety A.J. Clark led the team in tackles with nine and a tackle for loss. The scoring got started after Scott rushed the ball nine times allowing Eldemire to break free for a 64 yard strike for his longest of the year. A&M went up 6-0 after the extra point was missed by Jordan Puente. The Tigers would get points on the board after a 14 play 69 yard drive that ended with a 35 yard field goal to end the first half with AAMU up 6-3. The scoring didn t get started again until the fifth drive of the third quarter when Texas Southern scored a six-yard touchdown to give them a 10-6 lead at end of the third quarter. With the contest on the line and the visitors up by four, head coach Anthony Jones decided he seen enough of Lee and put in Brandon Wells, broken finger and all, to give the Bulldogs another dimension on offense. Wells, with running ability, ran the ball for 13 yards on two carries and threw the ball for 33 yards on two of three passing to give AAMU their chance to win the game with an eight play 49 yard drive that saw Wells rush for a four yard TD to give A&M a lead and eventually the win. Wells came in and did some things the right way and got us the go ahead touchdown, mentioned Jones. We won the game and our main objective was to score one more point than the other team. We achieved that objective, Thank God, said Jones. We did some good things but we just didn t do enough. We threw the ball and got into point blank range but came up with nothing. What I m hoping for better play by our team. We wanted to win the game and we did enough to do that, Jones recalled. We are not making proper decisions on offense or defense. We are missing check downs and blocks. We have to do better in all aspects of the game. A&M will have their opportunity to do just that as Mississippi Valley visits The Hill on Saturday, Sept. 5 for Homecoming Game time is set at 1:00 p.m. at Louis Crews stadium. 21 Game 6 A&M 9 vs. Mississippi Valley 28 Oct. 5, 2013 Louis Crews Stadium Huntsville, AL 14,873 NORMAL Head coach Anthony Jones could only hang his head as he watch a second straight homecoming loss at the hands of another Mississippi team. Alabama A&M loss Homecoming to Mississippi Valle State University for the second straight year in a row and a first against the Delta Devils since The Bulldogs completed a season low four passes on 22 tries between two different quarterbacks. Brandon Wells, who started the contest, finished three of 16 for 56 yards while Chris Leachman went one of six for 21 yards. Wells threw four interceptions partially due to a broken finger while Leachman totaled one turnover after trying to score on a Hail Mary. Well's also ran the ball eight times for 20 yards. Ball State transfer Barrington Scott rushed for a season high 159 yards on 22 carries with a long of 25 yards. This was his third game with 20 plus carries and his second with 100 plus yards. Brandon Eldemire went 57 yards on 10 touches and the only score for AAMU. Coming off an ACL tear in the spring, Brendon Johnson carried the ball three times for 26 yards. "When I fumbled the ball I got rolled up on my legs which caused me to let the ball go," Scott mentioned. "No matter what I did it's another loss which does not feel good." A&M was never in the game offensively posting only one double digit drive and four out of 16 drives that went eight plays or more. Of the 16 drives five ended in interceptions, six ended in punts, while one ended in a fumble, a missed field goal and downs. Eldemire's TD was the only drive that finished with a score. After the Maroon & White won the toss and chose to defer, Valley scored after three plays to take a 6-0 lead. The Delta Devils then increased their lead after a pick allowed Valley to take a 12-0 lead in the first quarter. A&M finally got things started when MVSU's punt returner Kenneth Dabney fumbled a punt and recovered it in the end zone giving A&M their second safety of the year. Valley then scored again on a pick six by Avery Boykins for 52 yards. The Bulldogs finally got things going on Brandon Eldemire's 14 yard rush to put A&M within striking distance Unfortunately Valley would add to their lead with a 37 yard field goal to give the Delta Devils a 21-9 advantage at halftime. The third quarter was played with no one scoring but the fourth showed Valley was the dominate team after another touchdown to seal the deal and give them their first victory of the season. "Offensively we had our opportunities but we didn't take advantage of them," Jones commented. "A lot of people blame the QB when you lose and congratulate him when you win, that's what comes with the position. We tried different things to help the passing game but we still couldn't make plays." "When you don't take advantage of your opportunities and don't give yourself a chance then you will not win," said Jones. "We didn't do that today and that's why we didn't win." A&M falls to 2-4 overall on the year and 2-2 in the Eastern division conference of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Maroon & White will hit the road for the remainder of October. 22 Game 7 A&M 17 vs. Southern 20 Oct. 12, 2013 A. W. Mumford Stadium Baton Rouge, LA 15,815 Baton Rouge, LA The first half started eerily similar to last week's finding the Bulldogs down by two scores. Realizing this A&M turned things around quickly with a Lawrence Barnett interception, his third of the season, which led to a one yard touchdown by Barrington Scott. Another interception by AAMU's Tremaine Shepard, his second of the year, led to a Cesar Ramon 32 yard field goal to pull the Maroon & White within four at half-time. All 10 points came off of Southern turnovers. Head coach Anthony Jones realizing the SU offense is ranked first in the conference held the ball for 17:21 during the first half keeping the potent offense off the field. The second half started with a Wells pick but the number one defense in the conference stood tall with Tremaine Lewis grabbing his second interception of the game. A&M had to punt the ball away which gave the Jaguars another shot at extending their lead. But on a fourth and 13 Germaine Calmes and Diondre Lewis sacked SU quarterback Dray Joseph ending the Jaguars drive. With the game going back and forth it would eventually be halted due to a lighting delay. After an hour and forty minutes the teams returned to the field to resume play. A&M was staring at a third and one from the SU 26 yard line. On fourth down starting quarterback Brandon Wells found tight end Toriono Upshaw for a five yard pass and catch that led to a touchdown by the same pair that put A&M ahead The ensuing kickoff saw Southern's Willie Quinn run the ball back 39 yards giving SU 49 yards to tie or win the game. After four plays that put the Jags on the A&M five yard line. Joseph threw the ball away and was remained in the tackle box with no receiver in the area. After a minute discussion by the officials grounding was called which required a 10 second run off and with seven seconds remaining in regulation the game was deemed over. The officials then ran into their locker room as the Bulldogs crossed the field to shake hands and celebrate a much needed victory. With both teams on the field the officials then returned to the field and explained that since Southern had a time-out remaining they could use it instead of allowing the run-off. SU's kicker Matthew Hill would eventually kick a 37 yard game tying field goal to force overtime. In the first overtime SU faced a fourth and long and attempted a 43 yard field goal but was blocked by Theron Rice. On the third play of AAMU's first offensive possession Barrington Scott was tackled and rolled over on his back which then allowed the ball to become dislodged. The officials called the play dead, met for two minutes then ruled the transfer fumbled ending the Bulldogs offensive possession in the first overtime. The start of the second overtime saw A&M on offense and after three plays saw Cesar Ramon miss a 37 yard field goal to the right. SU then took over and after three plays saw Hill hit his second 37 yard field goal for the upsetting victory over Alabama A&M. "We had our opportunities but we let some things get away," Jones said. "The players played a great game but unfortunately it didn't go our way. I did not agree with everything that happened." On Brandon Wells. "He played well he gave us a lot of opportunities to win the game." On the end of the game play. "SU QB Dray Joseph was called for a grounding penalty with seven seconds remaining. By rule there is a 10 second run off but the Jaguars had a time-out and used it instead of the run off. They then tied the game with a field goal. On Cesar Ramon performance. "Cesar did some really good things tonight. He still needs to improve on some areas but played well for us this evening." Wells finished 13 of 27 for 129 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Brandon Eldemire finished with 89 yards on 15 carries while Scott totaled 87 yards on 26 touches. Wide receiver Montaurius Smith led both teams with seven receptions for 82 yards. Ramon connected on his first field goal of the year a 32 yarder and totaled 242 yards on four kickoffs. Southern's Joseph went 16 of 36 with four picks and a touchdown. His favorite target Lee Doss caught six passes for 106 yards. The loss drops A&M to 2-5 on the year and 2-3 in the Eastern Division. Their next opportunity to capture a victory will be in the 72nd annual Magic City Classic in two weeks. 23 Game 8 A&M 7 vs. Alabama State 31 Oct. 26, 2013 Legion Field Birmingham, AL 61,113 Birmingham- Bulldog football scored seven points but was unable to convert on any other plays falling to Alabama State 31-7 in the 72nd annual Magic City Classic. In the first back-to-back win in the Anthony Jones era for State, the Hornets pulled together 14 points in the second quarter and 17 in the fourth to earn their first back-to-back win in the Reggie Barlow era. The Bulldogs were able to keep the high potent offense out of the endzone in the first quarter but the second quarter proved difficult as A&M was unable to convert for a first down until their third series of the game. From there A&M managed four first downs in the first half, 65 offensive yards and two passes completed. While State scored 14 points, secured 276 yards with 167 of those passing and 109 rushing. With 63,113 in attendance, the largest crowd A&M has played in front of in 2013, the Bulldogs were unable to score even getting as close as the Hornets 24 yard line before the end of their possession on downs. The second half proved better for the Maroon & White but it also was better for Alabama State as both teams were coming off a bye week. The Hornets use their time of possession of 12:18 seconds to increase their lead by 17 points in the fourth quarter. A&M did managed to enter the red zone in the second half multiple times but a Jaymason Lee fumble after 10 plays saw 85 yards chewed up, stopped one of the most promising drives in the game at the Hornets one yard line. The fourth quarter was similar to the first three except the Bulldogs were able to score when Brandon Wells found Montaurius Smith for a 13 yard score to finally put AAMU on the board. On the very next drive ASU's Bobby Wenzig found the uprights on a 28 yard field goal. State added another score to the board when Jaymason Lee was sacked for a loss of 12 yards and a Rashad Anderson punt out of bounds saw Alabama State take over at the A&M 32 yard line. They went on to score six points on a Rodney Cross 2 yard strike that increase their lead 31-7 for the eventual victory. State grabbed their 38th win in the Magic City Classic with a 31-7 win over A&M matching their total points from the 2012 season contest. Senior Theron Rice blocked his third kick of the season and finished with a pair of stops. Brandon Eldemire rushed the ball 10 times for 58 yards while Barrington Scott finished with 19 rushes for 63 yards. Terrance Pride punt return for a TD was called back on a blocking in the back penalty that would have put A&M within striking distance of the Hornets. Starting quarterback Brandon Wells went three for 10 for 27 yards while Jaymson Lee finished 10 for 22 for 153 yards with his longest of 43 yards. Rashad Anderson punted the ball eight times for 265 yards averaging 33.1 a punt with his longest being 48 and two landing inside the 20 yard line. Smith led the Bulldogs with four catches for 58 yards and the lone touchdown. A&M will try to break this three game losing streak when they travel to Alcorn State, Mississippi in their next contest on Saturday, November 2, at 4 p.m.. The win is head coach Anthony Jones 100th overall victory, 60th Southwestern Athletic Conference win, 40th victory over teams from Mississippi, and 399th win for the Alabama A&M football program. "Thank the Lord for allowing me to be here and all the support we have gotten throughout the years," Jones said. "This was a team effort from the players to my family, Dr. Hugine Jr., Mr. Hicks, our fans and our band. I am thankful for everyone involved in this process." Transfer Barrington Scott carried the load for A&M with 21 rushes for 66 yards. The lightning of the duo Brandon Eldemire collected 65 yards on five carries. Coming in after the Bulldogs posted 45 offensive yards, one first down, and a 15-0 deficit, Jaymason Lee went 11 of 20 for 150 yards and three touchdowns. In his first drive he led the Bulldogs on a four play, 73 yard possession in 1:49 seconds to get A&M on the scoreboard. Montaurius Smith secured five catches for 81 yards and made by far one of the best plays of the season when he laid out to catch a Mason pass that had thought to be overthrown. The reception allowed Alabama A&M to covert a third down into a first down. "When I saw the pass I thought, this ball is to pretty I have to catch it," said the Birmingham native. Chris Ervin led the fourth ranked defense in the Football Championship Subdivision with 11 tackles while linebacker Robert Nelson posted 10. "I'm proud of my team they made some great plays today. I've said this all along we are a good football team and we are better than what our record says," Jones mentioned. The game started fast for Alcorn as they took a 15-0 lead with 14:04 remaining in the second quarter. Alcorn took advantage of a safety after a Brave punt pinned the Bulldogs on their own four yard line. The Braves then added their second score on the very next drive giving them a 9-0 advantage. Alcorn then scored their second and last touchdown of the game on their fourth drive of the contest. From there the Bulldogs took over the game and played their brand of football. With over seven thousand fans in attendance, Jones and crew debut the Mad Dog offense with former quarterback Terrance Pride running the show. This allowed the passing game to open up for Mason who on his very next drive took A&M on a 13 play, 80 yard possession for their second straight score. With the score at and halftime looming Alcorn booted a 45 yard field goal to give themselves an lead. With 2:52 left in the first half the Maroon and White's Scott got loose for his longest run of the game at 26 yards, then Lee found Smith for 23 yards and a Brendon Johnson 10 yard run saw the Bulldogs at the Purple and Gold 19. Cesar Ramon attempted a 36 yard field goal but pushed it left and saw AAMU down at the break. The second half saw one score between both teams a 26 yard throw and catch from Lee to Dorsey. Those six points put A&M up for their first lead in a game since the :49 second mark remaining in the Southern University contest. From there the number one defense in the league held Alcorn to two punts, a pair of missed field goals and a fumble on special teams to put the ball back in the Bulldog offense hands for the eventual win. "We told the guys at half time we could win this game. As long as we played them to the very end we knew we would have a chance," said Jones. "It's an emotional win due to the way the season has gone. We've fought in all of our contests and this time we were able to finish it." The win was similar to last seasons as Alcorn defeated A&M by one point giving the Bulldogs their first loss of 2012 and tripped up A&M trying to get to their sixth championship game. Alcorn falls to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Eastern Division of the SWAC. The Braves were led by John Gibbs who went 18 of 30 for 171 yards and a TD strike. Arnold Walker rushed for 109 yards on 27 touches while Tollette George posted four receptions for 54 yards. Next up A&M will welcome the Tigers of Jackson State at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, in Louis Crews stadium. 25 Game 10 A&M 20 vs. Alabama State 26 Nov. 9, 2013 Louis Crews Stadium Huntsville, AL. 7,037 NORMAL -- Coach Anthony Jones unleashed the Mad Dog offense again and it paid off. The Maroon & White got off to a hot start offensively. With the new offensive strategy, Terrence Pride received his first start at quarterback, where he completed a pass good for twelve yards. Jaymason Lee took over from there and marched the team down the field and into the red zone. For the first time this season the team put points on the board on their opening possession, scoring a field goal and giving them a 3-0 lead over the visiting Tigers of Jackson State University. Cesar Ramon's second completed field goal of the year gave A&M the lead. The start defensively was also a great one for the Maroon & White as they forced the Tigers' offense to exit the field the same way they entered, scoreless. At the 7:10 mark of the first quarter, free safety Derrick Harris recorded his third interception of the season, picking off a pass from JSU's Clayton Moore off a deflection down the middle of the field. On the ensuing possession, the Maroon & White scored again, this time good for six. Jaymason Lee connected with a wide-open Montaurius Smith down the middle of the field for a 24-yard strike. Up 10-nothing over the Tigers, Smith and Lee linked again for another huge play down the heart of the JSU defense. Smith's second diving catch of the season helped complete a 44-yard bomb thrown by Lee, again putting the team in great scoring position as the time expired ending the quarter. The right foot of Cesar Ramon extended the Bulldog lead to 13-0 just 14 seconds into the second period. Ramon completed his third field goal of the season after the offense failed to convert a touchdown from the four-yard line. The offense cooled off slightly in the second period. A&M still converted plays and gained yards, but it was all for nothing as the team failed to post any more points in the second quarter. While the Maroon & White cooled off, momentum seemed to swing in favor of the Tigers and JSU began to heat up. The team that had played only one game in the last three weeks was able to score a touchdown at the one minute mark, and close the half with two field goals of their own to tie the game at 13. The rival Eastern Division teams went into the locker rooms with neither team possessing an advantage on the scoreboard. The second half began with Cesar Ramon kicking off to Jackson State, and the Tigers wasted little time changing the score line. JSU scored their second touchdown of the game less than two minutes into the half. After JSU gained the lead at 20-13, neither team would score again for the remainder of the period. Although, the Tigers took the lead in the third quarter, the second half was dominated by neither team. Both teams would exchange action with no major or break out plays. Despite holding the visitors to minimal yardage, the Maroon & White could not prevent JSU from increasing their lead. The Tigers were able to add another three points to their advantage on a field goal at the start of the fourth quarter. That gave Jackson a lead. As head coach Anthony Jones continues to mention the Bulldogs would not give up they turned seven plays on 56 yards into a touchdown with a minute and 14 seconds remaining. The first onside kick by the Bulldogs would not go there way and eventually JSU would earn their eighth win in the league and claimed the Eastern Division crown advancing to their second straight championship contest. Lee finished 10 of 29 for 195 yards with a pair of TD's and an interception. Barrington Scott led all runners with 90 yards on 16 carries. Smith collected five receptions for 124 yards for his second hundred yard game of the season. Once again Robert Nelson led A&M with nine tackles. Jackson was led by quarterback Clayton Moore who went 18 for 31 for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Pendleton posted nine catches for 193 yards while Rakeem Sims ran for 89 yards on 13 carries. The Bulldogs will have one more opportunity for a another home win when they host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, November 16, at 1 p.m. in their final home contest of the 2013 season.
