1 Chapter Quiz Show Program P.E.O. Scholar Awards program submitted to PSA by Chapter HG, Illinois Show Me the Money! Overview This program is intended to be a fun, interactive way for sisters to learn (or be refreshed) about the P.E.O. Scholar Awards. Sisters are given an opportunity to answer questions about the P.E.O. Scholar Awards. The first sister to answer a question correctly gets a P.E.O. dollar. At the end, whoever has the most money is deemed the chapter s scholar for the day! Prior to Presenting the Program Use the enclosed list of questions and answers pertaining to the P.E.O. Scholar Awards (current information correct as of 7/10) or create your own. The questions are true/false, multiple choice, and free-form. (Review the list of questions to ensure the answers and information are current and applicable to your chapter.) Assemble the following materials: o The list of questions and answers. (Consider having copies to give to sisters to take away after the program.) o P.E.O dollars. (You will need one for each question. You might want to have a few extras, for sisters might want a souvenir to take home.) Sample P.E.O. dollars are attached. Also notice they are special $15 bills, not just $1. o Optional: A certificate declaring the winner as the chapter s scholar or a small prize. (You might want to have extras on hand in case of a tie.) Presenting the Program Explain to the sisters present how this game will work: o We are going to find out who knows the most about the P.E.O. Scholar Awards. o We will ask a question. The first sister to raise her hand, be called upon, and answer the question correctly, will receive a P.E.O. dollar. Bonus questions are worth double dollars. o Hold up a sample P.E.O. dollar: Notice that the P.E.O. dollar is actually a 15- dollar bill. The B.I.L. who helped mint the P.E.O. dollars believes P.E.O.s are worth more than just a dollar! o After we get through all the questions, we will count our money. o The sister with the most money will be our chapter s scholar. Plan to have two presenters: One who reads the questions and verifies the answers and a second to call on sisters to answer questions. If the first sister to raise her hand answers incorrectly, the question is posed again and another sister has an opportunity to answer the same question. There is a chance sisters will start blurting out answers instead of orderly raising their hands and answering. Thus, you might have to decide if you will allow this or if you will stick to the rules. Allowing it can make the session livelier and faster paced, but less fair. After all questions have been asked and answered, find out who has the most money and declare that sister the chapter s scholar. Consider giving a certificate to that sister.

Endowed awards are supported by gifts to individual endowment funds administered by the P.E.O. foundation. (Usually interest earned on principal.) 8. How often are P.E.O. Scholar Awards given? Once each year. 9. Bonus Question: Is the award renewable? No, it is a one time award. 10. Who can nominate a candidate for a P.E.O. Scholar Award? Local chapters. 11. How does a chapter nominate a candidate for a P.E.O. Scholar Award? Chapter approval is granted by a majority voice vote at a regular or special meeting, plus completion of nomination form and accompanying letter detailing knowledge of the nominee. 12. Bonus Question: How many pages is the application letter? One. 13. What role does the nominating chapter play in the scholar s actual application process? None all applications are electronically sent directly to the nominee from the P.E.O. Scholar Awards Office in Des Moines and the applicant returns the completed forms to Des Moines. 14. There is a specific time period each year when chapter nominations are accepted by the Scholar Awards Board of Trustees. What is the time period that chapter nominations are accepted? August 20 to November 20.

Candidate must be a full-time student enrolled at an accredited college, university, or institution. Candidate must demonstrate academic excellence, maturity, and seriousness of purpose. Candidate must have clearly defined career goals. 22. To what must a recipient of a P.E.O. Scholar Award agree? To devote full time to doctoral level degree study or postdoctoral research during the year of the award and to maintain a high level of scholarship. To submit promptly the progress reports required by the P.E.O. Scholar Awards Board of Trustees. To honor, as her schedule permits, reasonable requests to speak to gatherings of P.E.O. members. To use the funds for necessary expenses incurred while pursuing a doctoral level degree or engaged in postdoctoral research at an accredited college, university, or institution. 23.
