1 CAXTON LEGAL CENTRE INC. REFERRAL LIST PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY BEFORE CONSULTING A LAWYER REFERRED TO IN THIS LIST Where do the names of solicitors on this list come from? This list acknowledges those solicitors from private practice who provide legal assistance to the community at Caxton Legal Centre s evening advice services. We gratefully appreciate the great support of the solicitors, and therefore we provide this list so that you are aware of their generous commitment. The list of firms of solicitors is not provided with any guarantee as to the quality or otherwise of these firms, although we trust that a reference list may be of assistance to many of our clients. Do I have to use one of the solicitors on the list? You are not obliged to use the service of these solicitors in preference to other solicitors in your area. If you do not wish to consult any of the solicitors from the list, then you could consult the Yellow Pages or contact the Queensland Law Society on for a list of all solicitors practising in your area. If I use a solicitor on this list, do I have to pay a fee? The solicitors on this list DO NOT work for free. If you consult a solicitor from this list you should be aware that you will need to pay for their services. It is your responsibility to ask the solicitor about fees (including fees for the first interview) BEFORE you make an appointment. Some firms listed here conduct work on behalf of Legal Aid Queensland. You can contact these firms and enquire about the possibility of them assisting if you think you might be eligible for Legal Aid see 1. in the referral list. Some but not all of the private solicitors on this list may provide free or discounted advice for an initial see 2. in the referral list. You should ask the solicitor whether they provide this service BEFORE you arrange an appointment. Some solicitors also provide assistance on a speculative basis. This means that if you do not have sufficient property and/or income to pay for their services, they may agree to do the work on the basis that if you win the case they will take their costs out of your claim, but, if you lose the case they will not charge you some or all of the legal fees but they WILL charge for outlays (e.g. expenses, court fees, barristers fees). You should ask the solicitor whether they do speculative work, and if they agree to help you on a speculative basis, they should advise you in writing of the agreements and what is meant by speculative. Some solicitors/barristers may conduct certain work on a pro bono basis (i.e. for free). Any such arrangement is a private one between you and the solicitor/barrister. It is separate from Caxton Legal Centre. Will the solicitors on this list take on my case? We cannot guarantee that the lawyers listed here will take on your case on an ongoing basis. We also cannot guarantee that the lawyers listed will be able to see you at all because their availability will depend on their other work commitments in relevant legal areas and individual willingness to act for you.
