1 PROCEDURE PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DOCTORAL DEGREES: CQ16 DOCTOR OF EDUCATION CU56 DOCTOR OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Policy Statement Responsibilities Definitions Related Legislation and Documents 1 PURPOSE The Doctor of Education and the Doctor of Professional Studies programs are doctoral degrees that make: a significant and original contribution to knowledge in the context of professional practice. The emphasis in the learning outcomes and research may differ between the different forms of Doctoral Degree qualifications but all graduates will demonstrate knowledge, skills and the application of the knowledge and skills at AQF level 10 (Australian Qualifications Framework, 2013, p. 63). The Doctor of Education (EdD) and the Doctor of Professional Studies (DProfSt) are doctoral programs of supervised research and research tasks designed for practitioners, comprising of: four research tasks; confirmation of candidature; and thesis component. These programs are governed by the University s Program Rules for the Degree of Doctor of Education and Program Rules for the Degree of Doctor of Professional Studies which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination. In the first term of enrolment, candidates may be required to undertake a prescribed course in research methods and continued candidature will be dependent on the successful completion of this course, if it is a requirement of admission. Candidates who successfully complete this course may claim this as one of the Research Tasks (RTs). As per the program rules of the EdD and DProfSt the program of study will consist of a portfolio of written work incorporating the supervision of four Research Tasks, the Confirmation of Candidature and a Thesis. 2 SCOPE This procedure applies to candidates enrolled in the Doctor of Education or Doctor of Professional Studies program at CQUniversity Australia. 3 EFFECTIVE DATE 10 November LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY Central Queensland University Act 1998 Qld 5 PARENT POLICY There is no parent policy. Reference Number/Code: 3009 Page 1 of 11
2 6 PROCEDURE The Research Tasks 6.1 Candidates will enter these programs with different backgrounds, interests and experience in research and different workplaces. Some may have a very clear idea of their final thesis and structure all their tasks to that end. Others, perhaps by changing circumstances of their work, may discover, alter or significantly sharpen their focus as they proceed through the degree. 6.2 The four supervised Research Tasks are the first component of the study within the program and are negotiated directly between the candidate and their supervisory panel. The Tasks can consist of, but are not limited to: literature Reviews; research Methodology; position Papers; critical Reflective Writing (e.g. results of a pilot study); refereed Writing for example, journal article, book chapter or refereed conference paper; courses in research methods or other research training, approved via the Office of Research Services. 6.3 The specifics of each Task might require several rounds of drafting to meet the expectations of each. Approximately 5,000 words per task as a final draft might be expected. Each of the Tasks will contribute to a portfolio of work for the degree. Note that usually the portfolio should contain no more than two refereed publications. Examination of Research Tasks 6.4 All Tasks will be individually formally externally examined or refereed prior to the candidate submitting their next Task. The portfolio is retained in the student file. 6.5 The Examiner of the each Task shall be external to the supervisory panel and appointed by the Dean of Graduate Studies or nominee. The Office of Research Services will administer the Task examination process. 6.6 As each of the Tasks has a defined focus, and this focus is established in consultation between the candidate and the supervisory panel, information will be provided on a form in relation to details of the task to be examined (See Appendix A). 6.7 The external examiner is invited to make comment on the following criteria: a) A well-structured paper, which signals its organisation to the reader and clearly addresses the task title/topic. b) The content of the paper is coherent and logical, with links between the parts. c) There is clear development of an argument/position by the writer, drawing critically upon appropriate literature and experience. d) Appropriate links are drawn between argument and practice, where relevant. e) A technically sound paper, i.e. references are accurate and use a consistent and recognised format, spelling and grammar are correct, proper sentence structure is used, and good use of word length. f) The task shows development of understanding in relation to acquiring knowledge of the discipline. g) Other Comments. h) Required Changes. i) General Recommendations the examiner is invited to make recommendations to the candidate and supervisory panel about future directions. 6.8 The grading categories for the Tasks are Satisfactory, Revisions Required or Unsatisfactory. Reference Number/Code: 3009 Page 2 of 11
3 6.9 For writing tasks submitted as RTs (book chapter or journal paper), the peer review process replaces the examination. The following criteria are applied to the accreditation of papers as a peer-reviewed writing task. Note the portfolio usually should not include more than two refereed publications: meets HERDC requirements for research; meets HERDC requirements for a Book Chapter, Journal Article or Refereed Conference Paper; must be related to the proposed research topic; can be co-authored, however the co-author must be a member of the supervisory panel; and co-authored paper, where a supervisor is not the co-author, will only accumulate percentage points. For example, a paper co-authored by three other authors will represent a 25% point allocation. The candidate will be required to accumulate the total of 100 points to equal one refereed writing task The application form for acceptance of a peer-reviewed writing task is provided in Appendix B. Advanced Standing Credit 6.11 Advanced standing credit may be applicable for up to a maximum of 2 of the 4 RTs; however this will be subject to the determination of the Deputy Dean (Research), School of Education and the Arts in consultation with the Supervisors (Principal and Associate). It will be approved by the Dean, Graduate Studies and by Research Higher Degrees Committee Advanced standing credit may be applicable for the successful completion of a research methods course (or equivalent) or other recent, relevant research-related work. Application for this credit must be made in writing and be supported by the candidate s supervisors. Confirmation of Candidature 6.13 Following successful completion of the 4 Research Tasks (RTs), the candidate will complete the Confirmation of Candidature, as per the CQUniversity Confirmation of Candidature Procedures A Portfolio will be prepared for the Confirmation of Candidature process that will include (a) confirmation of completion for each of the 4 RTs, (b) copies of the work submitted for each task where appropriate, and (c) the Confirmation of Candidature research proposal document. Thesis 6.15 The thesis will be based on the research proposal approved at Confirmation of Candidature. The thesis shall constitute a substantial investigation into a selected aspect of educational practice and be approximately 70,000 words in length or a thesis deemed equivalent by the Research Higher Degrees Committee The thesis will be examined by two examiners external to the University (as per the Program Rules). It will not include the Portfolio, although a summary of the SRTs completed will be listed in the front of the thesis document.
