4 Three models of financing doctoral studies, but all PhD students should be given same conditions, supervision and research resources. PhD student with employment Doktorandtjänst Doktorandtjänst employment contract Could have departmental duties up to 20% depending on the research project and department needs PhD Scholarship student (CSC, HEC, Erasmus Mundus, Science without Borders etc.) It is forbidden to do any departmental work (teaching, lab tasks, etc.) Industrial PhD student Employment at the company In all cases, supervisors and students should pay attention at the duration of the PhD studies and the financial support. 4

8 Individual Study Plan (ISP) Importance of updating ISP It is mandatory to annually update the ISP It is a contract between the PhD student and supervisor(s) Good documentation in the ISP is very important (for planning, salary ladder upgrade, undesired conflicts, etc.) General Performance requirements: Courses & Publications Outline plan for thesis work Intended goals of the education Follow-up of study effort and supervision Planned extent and type of teaching/departmental duties Licentiate/PhD Proposal (milestones in the ISP) early evaluation and feedback 8
9 KTH Objectives for 3 rd cycle programs of study Objectives as requirements The objective of KTH s third-cycle studies is that doctoral students must be first-rate, independent researchers. After completing the studies, persons with third cycle qualifications should have the ability to: describe and explain theories and empirical results within the area in question formulate specific research questions within the area in question use scientific methods and develop new knowledge through their own scientific studies produce critical analyses and evaluate methods applied and results from their own and others' scientific studies present and discuss research results in the scientific community present research in a pedagogical manner outside the scientific community and in an educational context assess ethical aspects of research within the area in question and act on that basis, and identify needs for new knowledge and have the knowledge to initiate and lead research. 9
10 KTH Objectives for 3 rd cycle programs of study Objectives to work towards Third-cycle studies must also attempt to ensure that doctoral students will have the ability, after completing the studies, to: take part in multi-disciplinary scientific cooperation within the problem area in question and analyze the role of research in the development of society 10
