1 LIFE Skills 101: Independent Living Fall 2012/Spring 2013 Tuesday-Thursday 1:00pm-2:15pm Class Meetings: Classes will meet approximately three times weekly. Class will be held in the ClemsonLIFE classroom (200A Godfrey Hall) on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Class will also be held in the students apartments on Thursday afternoons. The mission of the ClemsonLIFE Program at Clemson University is to provide a coordinated course of study that includes career exploration and preparation along with self-awareness, discovery, and personal improvement through a framework of courses, job internships, and community participation. Students at Clemson are expected to wait 15 minutes if an instructor is late. Instructor Information Instructor: Heather Conn Office: 201-C Godfrey Hall Phone: hconn@clemson.edu Office hours: Monday-Thursday 3:30-4:00pm Instructor: Cathleen Tupper Office: 201-D Godfrey Hall Phone: ctupper@clemson.edu Office hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00-10:00am Course Description: Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on practical application of independent living skills in areas including, but not limited to: transportation, nutrition, health, safety, clothing, shopping, housing, household chores, technology, communication, employment skills, community resources, and citizenship. 1

2 Required Materials: Students need to have a cell phone, class notebook (3-ring binder), paper, pens, pencils, lap top (or access to computer) Course Rationale: This course provides practical experience in independent living skills under the supervision of program instructors and staff. Upon completion of the course, students should demonstrate a desire to live independently and have a basic knowledge and performance ability of the skills needed to do so. Instructional Strategies Employed: direct instruction, classroom lecture, whole and small group instruction, cooperative learning, individual and group reflection, individual hands-on practical application of skills, task analysis (forward and backward chaining), progress monitoring Technology Skills Required: Students must be able to utilize their cell phones, access e- mail and blackboard regularly, locate internet Web sites, and use computers for professional presentations. Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance at all scheduled classes is the responsibility of each student. This course proceeds at such a pace that regular attendance is necessary to obtain maximum benefits from instruction. If it is necessary to be absent from class, it is the student s responsibility to make up resulting deficiencies. Students are responsible for all material presented in class meetings, including announcements about changes in course procedures or schedule. Absences must be cleared with the professor prior to missing class. Credit for assignments will be awarded only on due dates unless prior permission is granted by the professor. It is the student s responsibility to contact the professor and make any arrangements that may be necessary when special circumstances arise. Objectives: Students should fulfill the following course objectives to the extent appropriate: Students will 1. Safely and independently commute to and from their campus apartment, classrooms, job sites, dining halls, and the recreation center 2. Follow a daily schedule, make and keep scheduled appointments 3. Become familiar with electronic devises in widespread use for both work and recreation including but not limited to: smart phones, desktops, laptops, mp3s, copy machine, fax, scanner 4. Combine knowledge of a healthy diet and budgeting skills as they shop for food 5. Prepare meals and handle food safely, both for independent living and employment purposes 6. Know and practice the skills needed for eating in a restaurant including: making choices, using money, and practicing table manners 7. Identify and select the best clothing for different situations 8. Read clothing labels in order to launder their clothing and keep it in good condition 9. Identify and practice making healthy nutrition choices 10. Find and take appropriate steps to secure appropriate living quarters and 2

3 understand the housing agreements they sign 11. Understand what is involved in moving to their first home and the household upkeep required 12. Understand the major systems of the body in order to monitor their health and communicate effectively about health issues 13. Develop the vocabulary to describe symptoms in order to take charge of their health care 14. Take medicine safely, including following warning and dosage directions on labels 15. Make good personal health decisions; discussions include the topic of risky behaviors and decisions 16. Contact and communicate information appropriately in case of an emergency situation (fire, police department) 17. Utilize public community resources including public agencies, post office, library, etc. 18. Select an appropriate potential career and identify the job qualifications, duties, schedule, salary, etc. 19. Prepare for and practice job interview skills including responding to likely questions 20. Independently complete a job applications accurately and thoroughly (both paper and electronic version) and offer resumes to potential employers 21. Build vocabulary and concepts to help understand payments and deductions on pay statements (both paper and electronic copies) 22. Recognize and understand signs and warning labels in the community and the workplace 23. Learn the meanings of traffic signs and symbols, the basics of operating a car, and the steps to getting a driver s license 24. Work with maps, graphic aids, and other resources to know how to travel to and from near and distant locations 25. Make invitations (both electronic and paper) and plan a social event Assessment Strategies: Formal and informal assessments will be utilized to monitor student s progress. In both the beginning and at the end of the program, students will be assessed on independent living skills using the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS), a behavior rating scale that provides a complete assessment of adaptive skills across the life span. In the classroom, student s mastery of objectives will be assessed in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: formal paper tests, multiple-choice and short-answer questions, quizzes, interviews, and observations. 3
