University Press Scholarship Online You are looking at 1-10 of 38 items for: keywords : think tanks Between Gotham and the Gulf Jamie Peck in Constructions of Neoliberal Reason Published in print: 2010 Published Online: January 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter examines the project of the new urban right, highlighting the role of neoliberal think tanks and their organic intellectuals in the development of new policy frames and strategies. It begins with the right's narration of urban crises in post-1975 New York City before examining the neoliberal makeover of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. During this time, welfarist modes of urban governance have been displaced by a dogmatic (but at the same time inventive) form of neoliberal urbanism, based on the moral reregulation of the poor, together with state-assisted efforts to reclaim the city for business, the middle classes, and the market. Yet neoliberal urbanism has also been an adaptive project, evolving over time and space: if the shift in the ideational climate was a slow, incremental, and largely endogenous one in New York, it roared in from out of town, with violent intensity, in New Orleans. Consultants, think tanks and public policy Ariadne Vromen and Patrick Hurley in Policy Analysis In Australia Published in print: 2015 Published Online: May 2016 ISBN: eisbn: policypress/ This chapter examines the rise of niche policy analysis organisations in Australia in response to the demand for specialised advice that is both external to government and independent of formal organised interest groups. The recent proliferation of think tanks is outlined, and factors underlying this growth are considered. The spectrum of think Page 1 of 6
tanks is described. The increasing reliance by government agencies on the reports of consultancy firms, for both policy advice and program review, is documented and assessed. The chapter highlights the increasing diversity of Australian think tanks and the rise of consultants as government contractors, to comprehensively understand their policy role. Yet it also highlights the difficulties in studying policy influence, which would need a more sophisticated and nuanced view. Thoughts That Count?: The GOP's Woes and the Work of Conservative Think Tanks Pietro S. Nivola in Crisis of Conservatism?: The Republican Party, the Conservative Movement, and American Politics After Bush Published in print: 2011 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ The Republican Party took a beating in the elections of 2006 and And though it is likely to recover much lost ground in this year's mid-term election, the party and indeed conservatism generally have yet fundamentally to repair a tarnished brand. This chapter asks whether conservative think tanks played a part in the GOP's setbacks of recent years. It argues that the role of think tanks was different and more complex than has widely been supposed. Conservative policy intellectuals contributed to both the disappointments and the achievements of Republican administrations, but more consequentially to the latter. That record is of limited consolation, however, since voters tend to punish failures more than reward successes. Think tanks and policy analysis: meeting the challenges of think tanks in Japan Mika Shimizu in Policy analysis in Japan Published in print: 2015 Published Online: September 2015 ISBN: eisbn: policypress/ This Chapter is designed to address the challenges of present Japan think tanks, with a focus on policy analysis, through the three areas of analysis: 1) an overview of think tanks in Japan by articulating relevant gaps with key ingredients of strictly-defined think tanks; 2) an Page 2 of 6
exploration of how think tanks have been incorporated into Japanese society, by identifying the differences between think tanks in Japan and in the United States, and articulating relevant policy and social systems interlinked to the state of think tanks; 3) a case study of the 2011 Tohoku Disaster which examines how the state of think tanks in Japan is relevant to specific public policy. Based on these analysis, the final section provides a discussion of policy analysis and think tanks in Japan in the context of seeking for alternative models. Private Science, Public Injury Kristin Shrader Frechette in Taking Action, Saving Lives: Our Duties to Protect Environmental and Public Health Published in print: 2007 Published Online: January 2008 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter begins by explaining why the complexity of health-related science often makes it susceptible to manipulation. It then shows what some special interests do when they literally buy private-interest science through front groups, think tanks, and hire education ( hire education refers to industry funding of academic research that serves its corporate goals). The chapter surveys how private-interest science is done with incomplete data, contraindicated models, inadequately sensitive tests of pollution damage, and so on. Finally, the chapter shows how and why private-interest science often leads to death, injury, and flawed ethics.. Business Interests, Conservative Think Tanks, and the Assault on Welfare Ellen Reese in Backlash against Welfare Mothers: Past and Present Published in print: 2005 Published Online: March 2012 ISBN: eisbn: Publisher: University of California Press DOI: / california/ This chapter argues that the rise of a tightly integrated network of rightwing, or ultra-conservative, corporate-sponsored think tanks, starting in the late 1970s, played a crucial role in shifting political debate about welfare rightward and undermining public support for welfare in the 1980s and 1990s. It shows that business support for restrictive welfare Page 3 of 6
policies is linked to the rise of neoliberalism, economic restructuring, and economic globalization. Right-wing think tanks maximize their influence by cultivating ties to policy makers. They aimed to promote the three Ws among the poor: work, wedlock, and worship. A shift in the Brooking Institution s welfare agenda exemplifies how public debates on welfare narrowed after 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) s passage. Before the enactment of PRWORA, moderate think tanks, such as the Brookings Institution, defended welfare entitlements and opposed block grants and strict time limits for welfare receipt. Off-the-Books Lobbying, Electioneering, and the Special Purpose Entities That Do It RICHARD W. PAINTER in Getting the Government America Deserves: How Ethics Reform Can Make a Difference Published in print: 2009 Published Online: May 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter focuses on organizations other than lobbying firms and corporate in-house lobbyists that also engage in lobbying. These include advocacy groups, think tanks, public policy organizations, legal policy organizations, single-issue advocacy organizations, religious organizations, trade associations, and labor unions. The chapter then discusses the overall influence of these advocacy groups and other organizations. Think tanks in Taiwan Yi-jung Wu in Policy analysis in Taiwan Published in print: 2015 Published Online: January 2016 ISBN: eisbn: policypress/ The role of Think Tanks have been considered as a connection between policy researchers and practitioners. The history of think tanks in Taiwan can be considered as a trace-back of the country s political and economic path. Each think tank sets up in a specific era with specific missions reflecting on challenges and opportunities at that time. Their operations and activities are geared toward different research orientations based on Page 4 of 6
their organizational missions, sponsored resources, and organizational structures. Some of them are initially established by the public sector but then run independently by external funding from grant writing. Others are funded by well-off private businessmen. Although the activities and comments of Think Tanks are supposed to be neutral and nonideological, this does not seem to be the case in Taiwan yet. Many of the Think Tanks in Taiwan still could not be away from the influences of political parties and ideological biases. The McBama National Security Consensus and Republican Foreign Policy after the 2008 Election J. Lynch Timothy in Crisis of Conservatism?: The Republican Party, the Conservative Movement, and American Politics After Bush Published in print: 2011 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter argues that an essential consensus obtains within mainstream American politics on the imperatives of national security strategy the McBama consensus that both candidates in 2008 articulated. It suggests that there are several reasons to suppose that President Obama will increasingly work within this consensus and in so doing continue the Democratic cooptation of a strategy begun under George W. Bush. How Republicans might prosper in such an environment is considered and a typology of conservative foreign policy persuasions and their attendant prescriptions is analyzed. Continuity in US national security strategy represents a substantial electoral problem for the Republican Party. The chapter asks how the GOP can capitalize on an approach its most recent president created and that Obama has adapted rather than repudiated though with not much more success. Think tanks: bridging beltway and ivory tower? Sven Jochem in Policy analysis in Germany Published in print: 2013 Published Online: January 2014 ISBN: eisbn: policypress/ This chapter examines the way in which German think tanks conducted their policy analyses over the past decades and how successful they Page 5 of 6
have been. On the empirical ground of four case studies it is shown that the dualism between academic policy-analyses and applied policyanalyses could be overcome by some think tanks. Some other think tanks, however, changed their strategy towards directly influencing the public debate, thereby successfully employing new media on the internet. It seems plausible to argue that the closer think tanks are coupled with the academic community and the more they depend on public funding, the more it seems to be granted that policy advices are academically substantiated.
