1 Media Log November 25, 2013 Case Number: /23/ :56 Hours 2500 Laurel St, Napa, CA (A)(1) PC MISD - EXHIBIT DEADLY WEAPON OTHER THAN FIREARM 594 (A)(1) PC - MISD - VANDALISM:DEFACE PROPERTY (D) PC - FEL - CRIMINAL STREET GANG:WITH PUBLIC OFFENSE CONVICTION PC - MISD - VIOLATION OF PROBATION MISDEMEANOR URENA, JOEL JR (A.K.A. Joel Gomez) 22 yrs. of Napa, Ca. Two victims flagged down an officer in the area of Napa High School and told him they were just involved in an altercation with numerous subjects in the parking lot of the Laurel St. Apartments in the 2500 block of Laurel St. The victims told the officer they had just drive to the complex and had just dropped a friend when the Red Nissan utility vehicle pulled up behind them. The vehicle was occupied by approximately 5 subjects. Three subjects exited the vehicle and surrounded their vehicle. One of the subjects, later identified as Joel Urena, contacted the victims holding a sharp object. He then started making gang references and struck the vehicle with the sharp object causing damage to the door of the victim s vehicle. The other subjects with Urena told him to calm down and walked him back to the red Nissan. Urena and the other subjects left the area in the Nissan and were last seen in the parking lot of the 7-11 on First St. Napa Police Officers and Napa Sheriff Deputies responded to the area of the 7-11 and located a red Nissan Pathfinder in the parking lot. There were three occupants in the vehicle, Ezekiel Paz 18 yrs. of Fresno (front passenger), 17 year old male (left rear passenger), and Joel Urena (right rear passenger). There were two other subjects Page 1 of 5
2 associated with the vehicle, Eduardo Octaviano 20 yrs. of Napa and Richardo Lemus 24 yrs. of Napa who were sitting outside of the vehicle. All five subjects were detained. The victim s responded to the scene and positively identified Urena as the person with the sharp object who cause the damage to their vehicle. An officer searched the Nissan and located gardening shears and a knife in the vehicle. Urena was arrested for brandishing a weapon with a gang enhancement, vandalism with a gang enhancement and violation of probation. He was booked into Napa County Department of Corrections. The other subjects were released. Page 2 of 5
3 Case Number: /22/ :36 Hours 200 block of Soscol Ave., Napa, CA (A) HS - FEL - POSSESS NARCOTIC CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE 4060 BP - MISD - POSSESS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION 4140 BP MISD - POSSESS HYPODERMIC NEEDLE/SYRINGE BALIJA, KRISTINA STORMEY 21 yrs. of Vallejo, Ca. An officer was dispatched to a report of possible drug activity occurring in the parking lot of Togo s at South Napa Marketplace. The reporting party advised they had observed a subject in a blue Toyota Prius using a syringe to inject some type of drug. The officer arrived on scene and observed a vehicle matching the description provided by dispatch. The officer approached the vehicle and contacted the driver who was identified as Kristina Balija, who was sitting in the driver`s seat eating a container of ice cream. The officer noticed signs of recent drug use by Balija. When the officer told Balija why he was contacting her, she admitted to having a syringe in her vehicle. The officer searched the vehicle and located the syringe, 1 pill of Oxycodone, 1 Dilaudid pill and a prescription bottle filled with 22 muscle relaxer pills made out to another person. Balija was arrested and booked. Page 3 of 5
4 Case Number: /25/ :16 Hours 500 block 3rd St., Napa, CA (A) HS - FEL - POSSESS NARCOTIC CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE 647 (F) PC - MISD - DISORDERLY CONDUCT:ALCOHOL PC MISD - VIOLATION OF PROBATION VANMETER, KARL DOUGLAS 52 yrs. of Napa, Ca. (Transient) Officers were dispatched to 500 block of 3rd Street, Napa Valley Expo to investigate a report of an unwanted subject. Dispatch advised an employee with the Napa County Winter Shelter called to report an intoxicated subject entered the winter shelter and was now refusing to leave the property. An officer arrived on scene and contacted Karl Vanmeter, who was sitting on the ground with his back against the wall of Merlot Hall. Vanmeter was found to be intoxicated. A records check revealed Vanmeter to be on active probation related to a DUI. Vanmeter was arrested for public intoxication and violation of his probation. A search of Vanmeter resulted in officers finding a single pill of Hydocodone, as scheduled narcotic, in his pockets. Vanmeter was transported to Napa County Department of Corrections, where he was booked. Page 4 of 5

(Transient) An officer contacted James Pauls behind the Lucky s grocery store in the 2300 block of California Blvd. The officer recognized Pauls from prior contacts and knew he had a warrant for his arrest. Pauls was arrested and searched. The search resulted in the officer finding a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine in his shirt pocket. Inside the bowl of the pipe was a useable amount of suspected methamphetamine. Pauls was booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections. Page 5 of 5
