1 USAAF Victory Claims for Focke Wulf Fw 190s 14 May 2 September 1943 Arthy & Jessen 2013 By Andrew Arthy and Morten Jessen Contents Introduction... 1 Abbreviations... 1 Aircraft Types Operated... 1 Listing... 2 Tables Bibliography Introduction Many air combats over the central Mediterranean in 1943 were chaotic and intense. This is reflected by the facts presented in this document, which matches USAAF aerial victory claims for Fw 190s with known data from the German perspective in the period covered by the book Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in the Battle for Sicily. USAAF fighter units claimed 63 Fw 190s destroyed, fourteen probably destroyed, and 28 damaged in this period, while the Germans actually lost nine Fw 190s destroyed by USAAF fighters and two damaged, as well as five possibly destroyed by USAAF fighters and one possibly damaged. This document is not suggesting that the aerial victory claims submitted by USAAF pilots were made up. The likely explanation in many cases is that the American pilot misidentified his opponent, a common occurrence in air combat. This document reveals that in many combats where Fw 190s were claimed by the USAAF, there were not actually any of that German aircraft type present. Misidentification seems to have particularly been a problem for the P-38 pilots of the 1st, 14th and 82nd Fighter Groups. Unintentional overclaiming, which occurred in every air force and on every front in the Second World War, is another reason for the disparity between the number of Fw 190s claimed shot down or damaged by USAAF fighter pilots, and the number of Fw 190s actually shot down or damaged. Aerial victory claims submitted by all participants in the Mediterranean theatre in 1942 and 1943 were around 50 to 75 per cent accurate. There was a steady level of claiming of Fw 190s throughout the period, with peaks around the capture of the island of Pantelleria on 11 June 1943, and after the Anglo-American landings in southern Sicily on the morning of 10 July Abbreviations dam = damaged m = miles S = south W = west FS = Fighter Squadron Lt. = Lieutenant 2/Lt. = Second Lieutenant Red text = information about Fw 190 units prob = probably destroyed N = north E = east FG = Fighter Group Lt/Col. = Lieutenant Colonel 1/Lt. = First Lieutenant F/O. = Flight Officer Blue text = information about other Luftwaffe units Aircraft Types Operated 1st FG P-38 14th FG P-38 27th FG A-36 31st FG Spitfire 33rd FG P-40 52nd FG Spitfire 57th FG P-40 79th FG P-40 81st FG P-39 82nd FG P th FG P th FG P th FG P-39 1
