Feature) The Re-certification Process Renewal of certification is required every two years. Re-certification fees are set by the PTCB and the ExCPT. For PTCB Recertification: Approximately 60 days before the end of their two-year certification period, all eligible CPhT's will receive notification and an application for re-certification from the PTCB. For ExCPT Recertification: To recertify, technicians must use the ICPT Recertification Application Form, which is available on the ICPT website, and send it to ICPT along with full payment by the postmark deadline. Continuing Education Guidelines Twenty (20) contact hours of continuing education required for re-certification. Must be earned in pharmacy-related subject matter. Programs felt to be appropriate for Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhT's) must pertain to the following topics: Medication distribution and inventory control systems Pharmacy operations Calculations p2
3 Program specific to pharmacy technicians Interpersonal skills Organizational skills Pharmacy law Pharmacology/drug therapy. Please refer to PTCB website and ExCPT website for a list of all accepted topics. Acceptable Certificates of Completion Participation include the following: Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education (ACPE) - Certificate of Continuing Pharmaceutical Education Participation. American Association of Pharmacy Technicians (AAPT) - Certificate of Continuing Education Service Participation. Up to ten (10) contact hours of credit may be earned in the practice site under the supervision of the pharmacist(s). These 10 in-service hours are not to be awarded for working 10 hours at the CPhT's regular duties. An arrangement should be established between the CPhT and supervising pharmacist for the completion of special in-service projects or training. These projects or training courses should be selected within the needs of the individual CPhT in mind. May include self-study articles from professional pharmacy journals the pharmacist selects. p3
4 Only the supervising pharmacist listed on the special PTCB Universal Continuing Education Form records these in-service hours. Hours must be earned within the two-year period. Requirements must be completed on or before the certification expiration date. No continuing education hours earned before passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians may be used for re-certification. Extra hours earned during any two-year certification period may not be carried over and applied to the next certification period requirements. Audits A certain number of CPhT's will be chosen at random for an audit of continuing education by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and Institute of Certified Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) If chosen for audit, the CPhT must list all continuing education hours on the application and send photocopies of the certificates of completion of the credits.
