2 Motivation for space data preservation Peculiarity of space experiments: a wide range of scientific domains is involved the preparation time is very long space missions are very expensive repetition/extension of successful experiments also requires long time and is expensive space experiments are selected by a rigorous peer review Space data is precious and has very relevant scientific value Need for Preservation and Exploitation Data preservation will allow the scientific community to easily retrieve and use data, also in the long term, through a simple and unique access point March Copernicus Big Data Workshop 2

3 International Space Station The International Space Station is the largest laboratory for conducting research in space ISS allows research in many different scientific disciplines, as: exposed astronomy radiation physics plasma physics space technology astrobiology atmosphere and environment pressurized human physiology and medicine material science fluid science & combustion biology ISS exploitation is part of the ESA ELIPS programme: about 260 projects involving 1500 scientists Courtesy of ESA March Copernicus Big Data Workshop 3

5 ISS European Ground Segment USOC European ISS MCC Operation Network Link to ISS partners Need for improving data exploitation has been recognised ESF: implement a strategy for data sharing, so that communities beyond the current reach of the ELIPS programme can benefit from experiments that have already been carried out in space ULISSE project: conceived by USOC network and co-funded by EC pathfinder study in the ISS data preservation domain development of the ULISSE Demonstrator, testing the main functions of an ISS data e-infrastructure March Copernicus Big Data Workshop 5

6 Relevance for Copernicus Recommendations of European Science Foundation for ELIPS: enlarge the user community, attracting new scientists and widening the scientific scope of the programme promote cross-fertilization between scientific domains and communities, enhancing programme-wide interactions and information flow, in order to identify new inter-disciplinary research topics improve exploitation of knowledge generated by space data in compliance with the applicable property rights and related data policy ensure accountability about the use of space data The above objectives are common to all disciplines A data e-infrastructure would support achieving the above objectives March Copernicus Big Data Workshop 6

10 Relevance for Copernicus Taking new users to data: specific dataset and related information should be associated to its main application or related topics a user could find a relevant dataset following the association from its topic or application of interest, without any prior knowledge of the dataset/mission different scientific or applicative domains may be interconnected through relevant datasets Semantic technologies for knowledge representation may provide the above features Key issues : Promote standardization of a common core metadata, to ensure interoperability of multiple repositories Promote standardization of scientific ontologies (with the support of an appropriate tool for ontology editing) Improve tools for population and management of science ontologies March Copernicus Big Data Workshop 10
