2 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR GRADUATE PROGRAMMES Introduction This BROCHURE is specially prepared to afford those who are interested in pursuing Graduate Studies at this University the opportunity of having a first hand knowledge of programmes available and the regulations thereof: The programmes covered by the Brochure are, however, subject to change without notice. Prospective candidates applying for admission to any particular programme should note that the availability or otherwise of any programme depends upon staffing and/or facilities available for the said programme. BSc (Hons) UCC; PhD SUNY, Buffalo NY USA Assistant Registrar/Secretary Simon Yaw Boribah: BA Ghana, MSc (Planning) Kumasi General Regulations First Semester - August to December Second Semester - January to May 1.1 Applications and Procedure for Admission Applications for admission shall be made on a prescribed form obtainable from the Office of the School of Graduate Studies, to which the completed forms shall be returned not later than the 30 th of March proceeding the academic year in which a candidate wishes to start the programme. All candidates applying for admission to Research Programmes shall be required to submit (in about 500 to 700 words): (a) (b) An outline of Proposed Research; and Statement of Purpose Applications shall be considered, in the first instance, by the appropriate Departmental Board. The Departmental Board shall satisfy itself of the sustainability or otherwise of the candidate and the availability of resources for the successful completion of the candidate s work. Where an interview or a qualifying examination is required for determining the suitability or otherwise of an applicant, the Departmental Board shall decide the form of interview or qualifying examination and appoint a panel from its members to administer the interview or examination. The School of Graduate Studies shall be represented at the interview or examination. The Head of Department shall submit to the School of Graduate Studies for its approval, a list of candidates recommended for admission together with: 2

3 a) The pertinent extracts from the minutes of the Departmental Board b) Statement on the nature of the programme c) Dissertation/Thesis topic(s) and an outline of the proposed research (where applicable) d) Names of proposed supervisors 1.2 Description of Graduate Studies Graduate Studies shall be categorized under two main headings: (a) (b) Full Time and Part-Time A Full-time Student shall be taken to be a candidate pursuing a full-time programme of study the duration of which shall not be longer that twenty-four months from the date of registration for a master s programme and thirty-six months for Doctorate programme. A Part-time Student shall be taken to be a candidate in full time employment pursing a programme of study the duration of which shall not exceed thirty-six months form the date of registration for Master s programme and forty-eight months for a Doctorate programme. 1.3 Registration Candidates admitted to a Graduate programme of this University shall register at their respective Departments fan at the Office of the School of Graduate Studies at the beginning of each Semester by filling in the appropriate forms prescribed for that purpose. REGULATIONS FOR HIGHER DEGREES 2.1 The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded on the basis of a research programme in which a candidate has made an original and significant contribution to knowledge. (a) Qualification for Admission i. A candidate shall hold a Master s degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme. i iv. (b) A candidate who does not hold a Master s degree shall first register for a Master s degree by research. If he proves himself to be of sufficient calibre by the end of the first year of the programme, he/she may be permitted bys the Board, to register for the PhD degree. This registration shall be deemed retrospective from the date of the original registration for the Master s degree. A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement stated above but is otherwise adjudged suitable may be admitted. For the purpose of assessing his suitability, such a candidate may be interviewed or be required to take entrance examination, or both, as directed by the Board on the recommendations of the appropriate Departmental Board. A candidate may be required, on the recommendation of the Department concerned, to audit appropriate courses. Duration of Programme Subsequent to registration, the candidate shall pursue a full-time programme of study and research for at least two academic years, except that: i. A candidate fully engaged in advanced study and research for his degree, who before registration, was engaged in research to the satisfaction of the Department concerned, may be exempted for not more than one academic year. In special circumstances, the Department may recommend that a candidate be allowed to spend not more than one academic year 3

4 i of his programme in advanced study and research at another institution, provided that this work can be supervised in a manner satisfactory to the Department and the Board. A member of the full-time staff of the University may be accepted as a part-time candidate. Where the School Board is satisfied that a senior member has been engaged in research evidenced by publications he may submit a thesis at any time without previous registration. The thesis shall be submitted, accompanied by the prescribed form (obtainable from the School of Graduate Studies), not later than thirtysix months after the beginning of the programme. In the case of parttime students, this period shall be forty-eight months. These maximum times may be extended by the Board, on the recommendation of the Supervisor, by periods of not later than six months, to a maximum of forty-eight months for full-time students and sixty-months for part-time students. iv. In special circumstances, the School Board, on the recommendation of the Departmental Board concerned, may accept as a part-time candidate a person who is not a member of the full-time staff of the University but is engaged in an occupation which, in its opinion, affords the candidate the opportunity to pursue his programme. In such a case the Board, shall prescribe a minimum period for his programme, which in its opinion, having regard to the time he is able to devote to the programme prescribed by the appropriate Department, is equivalent to two academic years of full-time study. A candidate may submit as subsidiary matter in support of his candidature any printed contributions to the advancement of his subject which he may have published independently or conjointly or any other supporting material. In the event of a candidate submitting subsidiary matter of a conjoint nature he shall be required to state fully his share of such conjoint work. Not later than six months before the date when he proposes to enter for the examination a candidate shall submit the title of his thesis to the appropriate Departmental Board for approval and submission to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies. After the final title of the thesis has been approved it may not be changed except with the express permission of the Board on the recommendation of the Departmental Board. The three copies of a thesis that has been accepted for the award of a Ph..D degree shall be distributed as follows: Examination a) The top copy shall be deposited in the University Library. b) The second copy shall be deposited in the Department c) The third copy shall be deposited in the office of the School Board. The examination shall comprise: a) Assessment of thesis b) Oral examination The examination fees shall be as determined from time to time by the University, examination fees are not refundable. Nonetheless, where a candidate is unable to attend an examination at a prescribed time due to justifiable unforeseen circumstance acceptance to the Board the fees may be transferred to the next prescribed examination. Not less than five examiners, of whom at least two shall be External Examiners, shall be appointed by the School Board on the recommendation of the Departmental to examine the thesis. 4

5 A panel of not less than five examiners including at least two External Examiners shall conduct the oral examination. The oral examination shall be public. In each case the chairman of the panel shall be the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies or his representative. In recommending the appointment of an external examiner for the purpose stated above, the Departmental Board shall submit to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies an outline Curriculum Vitae of the proposed examiner based on a format obtainable from the office of the School Board. v. The School Board, in the recommendation of the Department concerned, may permit a candidate, on application, to undertake a limited amount of University teaching or outside work which, in its judgement, shall not interfere with the pursuit of the proposed course of advance study and research. vi. A candidate who is fully engaged in research for the degree shall present himself for examination not later than three years form the date of his registration. A part-time candidate shall present himself for examination not later than four years form the date of registration. In special cases, an extension of these time limits, may be granted by the School Board, on the recommendation of the Department concerned. (d) School of Graduate Studies with copies to the appropriate Head of Department. On the basis of work done in the course of the year, a head of Department, in consultation with his Departmental Board, may recommend for approval by the School Board that a candidate may continue or terminate his studies. The Thesis i. The thesis shall comply with the following conditions: The greater portion of the work submitted must have been done subsequent to the registration of the student as a candidate for the degree. i The thesis shall normally be written in English the length of which may be prescribed by the appropriate Departmental Board. The thesis shall consist of the candidate s own account of his research, and be certified. It may describe work done in conjunction with the candidate s supervisor, provided the candidate states clearly his share in the investigation, and that the supervisor certified this statement. Under no circumstances shall a paper written or published in the joint names of two or more persons be accepted as a thesis. Work done conjointly with persons other than the candidate s supervisor shall be accepted as a thesis in special cases only. In such cases the approval of the Departmental Board and the Board of School of Graduate Studies shall be given. (c ) Progress Reports i. Supervisors shall submit reports on the work of each student at the end of each Semester on prescribed forms to the dean of the iv. A candidate shall not be permitted to submit a thesis which has been submitted elsewhere. Nonetheless, a candidate shall not be precluded, at the discretion of his supervisor, from incorporating work which he has already submitted for a degree in this 5

6 University or elsewhere, provided that he indicates in his thesis any work which has been so incorporated. v. FIVE typed or printed unbound copies shall be submitted to the Board through the Head of Department. The size shall be A4 except for drawings and maps, on which no restriction shall be placed. Where the thesis is typed, only one side of the paper shall be used with a margin 45mm on the left-hand side of the page: After the thesis has been approve, it shall be bound in standard form as follows: i iv. The submission to the School board shall include the pertinent extracts form the Departmental Board s minutes together with the Examiners Reports. The recommendations of the School Board shall be submitted to the Academic Board for approval. Each successful candidate shall thereafter be awarded a certificate under the seal of the University oat a Congregation of the University assembled for that purpose, or failing that, the certificate shall be sent to him by registered post. vi. v vi ix. The panel shall submit its recommendations to the Departmental Board in the form of a joint report signed by both internal and external examiners with respect to the oral examination, and separate reports with regard to the thesis on the basis of prescribed criteria. A candidate who does not satisfy the examiners at the oral examination shall not be recommended for the award of a degree, the standard of the thesis notwithstanding. The examiners may recommend to the School Board that the candidate be permitted to re-submit his thesis in a revised form within a specified period up to a maximum of eighteen months. The fee for re-entry shall be half the normal entry fee. f. Procedure for Award of a Degree i. All Examiner s Reports shall be submitted to the Departmental Board which, in turn, shall make its recommendations known to the School Board. 2.2 Master s Degrees (a) Designation i. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) based on research Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Arts (MA) based on a combination of taught courses and research programme. i Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) based on a specified professional programme with a research component. (b) Qualification for Admission i. A candidate shall hold a First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) honours degree, or its equivalent, in an appropriate field of study, from a recognised University. A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement stated above but is otherwise adjudged suitable by the Departmental Board, shall, where practicable, be interviewed and in addition may be required to take an entrance examination as determined by the Departmental Board concerned. A candidate who has 6

7 i satisfactorily completed a Graduate Diploma course may be considered for admission on the recommendation of the Departmental Board concerned. A candidate registered for the M.Phil degree may be required to audit appropriate courses on the recommendation of the Departmental Board concerned. duration of his programme which in its opinion, having regard tot eh proportion of his time which he is able to devote to the programme prescribed by the appropriate Department, is equivalent to twelve months full-time study. v. A full time candidate shall complete his programme not later than twenty four months from the date of registration. A part time candidate shall complete his programme not later than thirty-six months from the date of registration. ( c) Duration of Programme (d) Progress Reports i. A full-time programme leading to a Master s degree shall be not less than one academic year except that: i iv. In special circumstances, the Department may recommend that a candidate be allowed to spend not more that six months of his programme in advanced study and research at another institution provided that his work can be supervised in a manner satisfactory to the Department and the School Board. A member of the full-time staff of the University may be accepted as a part-time candidate. Where the Board of the School of Graduate Studies is satisfied that a senior member has been engaged in research evidenced by publications and/or presentation, he may register and submit a thesis at any time. In special circumstances, the Board of Postgraduate Studies, on the recommendation of the Departmental Board concerned, may accept as a part-time candidate for the degree a person who is not a member of the full-time staff of the University, but is engaged in an occupation, which is its opinion, affords the candidate the opportunity to pursue his programme. In such a case the Board of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Departmental Board shall prescribe a minimum period for the i. Supervisors shall submit reports on the work of each student at four monthly interval on prescribed forms to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies with copies to the Head of Department. (e) On the basis of the standard of work at the expiration of at least fifty percent of the duration of the programme a Head of Department upon receiving the report of supervisor, in consultation with his Departmental Board, may recommend for approval by the School Board that a candidate may continue or terminate his studies. The thesis i. The thesis shall normally be written in English; the length of which may be prescribed by the appropriate Departmental Board. The thesis shall consist of the candidate s own account of his research and be so certified. It may describe work done in conjunction with the candidate s supervisor, provided the candidate states clearly his share in the investigation, and that his statement is certified by the supervisor. In such cases; the approval of the Departmental Board and the Board of Postgraduate Studies shall be given. A candidate shall not permitted to submit a thesis which has been submitted elsewhere but a candidate shall not be precluded, at the discretion of his supervisor, form incorporating work, which he has already submitted for a degree in this university or elsewhere, provided that he indicates in his thesis any work which has been so incorporated. THREE typed or printed unbound copies of the thesis shall be submitted through the Head of Department to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies. The size shall be A4 except for drawings and maps on which no restrictions are placed. Where the thesis is typed only one side of the paper shall be used with a margin 45mm on the left-hand side of the paper. After the thesis has been approved it must be bound in standard form as follows: art vellum or cloth; overcast; edges uncut; lettered boldly up spine in gold (0.625cm cm) degree, date, name. v. The candidate may submit subsidiary matter in support of his candidature any printed contributions to the advancement of his subject which he may have published independently or conjointly or any other supporting material. In the event of a candidate submitting subsidiary matter of a conjoint nature, he/she shall be required to state fully his share of such conjoint work. v vi (f) change in the thesis topic shall be submitted to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies for approval. The thesis shall be submitted, accompanied by the prescribed form obtainable from the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, not later than TWENTY-FOUR MONTHS. These maximum times may be extended by the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, on recommendation of the Supervisor, by periods not more than SIX MONTHS to a maximum of THIRTY-SIX MONTHS for full-time students and FORTY- EIGHT MONTHS for part-time students. The three copies of a thesis that has been accepted for the award of Master s degree shall be distributed as follows: The top copy shall be deposited in the University Library. The second copy shall be deposited in the Department The third copy shall be deposited in the Office of the School of Graduate Studies. Examination i. The examination shall include: (a) Written examination (where appropriate) (b) Assessment of thesis (c) Oral Examination Candidates shall register in their Departments and at the Board of the School of Graduate Studies at the beginning of each Semester for courses in which they are to be examined. vi. A provisional thesis topic shall be submitted within the first six months and the final topic before the last six months of the course. Not less than three examiners, of whom at least, one shall be an External Examiner shall be appointed by the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of the Departmental Board, to examine the thesis. In each case, the Chairman of the panel shall be the Dean, or his representative. When recommending the appointment of an external examiner, the Departmental Board shall submit an outline Curriculum Vitae of the of the proposed examiner based on a format obtainable from the Board of the School of Graduate Studies v. The panel shall submit its recommendations to the Departmental Board in the form of a joint report signed by both internal and external examiners with respect to the oral examination, and separate reports with respect to the thesis, on the basis of prescribed criteria approved by the Board of the School of Graduate Studies. vi. In the case of the MA, MBA, MSc or MPharm degrees, the three components of the examination namely, written papers, thesis and oral, shall each be weighted, such that no single component shall account for less than twenty-five percent. There shall be a pass in each component and the candidate s overall performance shall determine his success or failure. In the case of M.Phil degree a candidate who does not satisfy the examiners at the oral examination shall not be recommended for the award of a degree irrespective of the standard of his thesis. A v (g) candidate may re-submit him/herself for oral examination only once more within a period of EIGHTEEN MONTHS. The examiners may recommend to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies that the candidate be permitted to re-submit his/her thesis in a revised form within a specified period of up to EIGHTEEN MONTHS and the fee for re-entry be half the normal entry fee. Procedure for the Award of a Degree i. All examination results for the coursework shall be considered by the Departmental Boards, which in turn, shall make their recommendations to the School Board. i After the oral examinations, extracts from the Examiners reports, shall be submitted to the Departments to enable the students make the necessary corrections in the thesis. The Departmental Board would, in turn, submit their recommendations together with three certified copies of the corrected thesis to the School of Graduate Studies for consideration. The submission to the School Board shall include the pertinent extract from the Departmental Board s minutes. iv. The recommendations of the School Board shall be submitted to the Academic Board for approval. v. Each successful candidate shall thereafter be presented with a certificate, under the seal of the :University at a Congregation of the University assembled for that purpose, or failing that, the certificate shall be sent to him/her by registered post. 9

10 2.3 Postgraduate Diploma A Graduate Diploma is awarded on the basis of a programme of taught courses iv. (a) Examiners For Written and Practical Examination (a) (b) Qualification for Admission The entry requirement shall be a Bachelor s degree or its recognized equivalent. In addition, candidates must satisfy the appropriate Departmental requirements. Duration of Programme A panel comprising not less than three examiners, of whom at least one shall be an External Examiner, shall be appointed by the Board of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Departmental Board to assess the papers. When recommending the appointment of an external examiner, the Departmental Board shall submit an outline Curriculum Vitae of the proposed examiner based on a format obtainable from the Board of the School of Graduate Studies. (c) A programme leading to a Postgraduate Diploma shall be for a period of one or two academic years depending upon the requirements of the Department concerned. Examination i. Type of Examination There shall be written and oral examinations. Practical examinations may also be given where appropriate. i Registration Candidates shall register in their Department and at the School of Graduate Studies at the beginning of each semester for courses in which they are to be examined. The examination fees shall be as determined from time to time by the University. Fees shall not be refundable, but in the case of justifiable unforeseen circumstances acceptable to the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, fees may be transferred from one examination to the next. (b) For the Oral Examination A panel comprising not less that three members of whom at least one shall be in External Examiner shall be appointed by the Board of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Departmental Board to conduct the oral examination. v. Assessment Candidates shall be assessed in accordance with current University Regulation. Results of the examination shall be submitted by the Departmental Board to the School of Graduate Studies for approval, in the first instance, before being forwarded to the Academic Board for final approval. ( c) Procedure for the Award of a Postgraduate Diploma Each successful candidate shall be awarded the appropriate Postgraduate Diploma of the University, at a Congregation of the University assembled for the purpose. 10

11 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES A. COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES a. FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE 1. Department of Animal Science MSc/MPhil/Ph.D Animal Breeding and Genetics Animal Nutrition Reproductive Physiology Animal (Monograstric and Ruminant) Nutrition and Management Animal Physiology MSc/M.Phil Meat Science Applicants for admission to MSc and M.Phil programmes should possess a Bachelor s degree in Agriculture and related disciplines from a recognized University. 2. Department of Cop Science MSc Agronomy (Plant Breeding) Agronomy (Crop Physiology) Crop Protection (Entomology) Crop Protection (Plant Pathology) Crop Protection ( Nematology) Soil Science Forage Crop Protection and Management M.Phil/Ph.D Agronomy Crop Physiology Entomology Forage Crop Production and Management Plant Breeding Plant Pathology ( Mycology, Nematology, Virology) Soil Erosion and Conservation Soil fertility/plant Nutrition Soil Genetics, Morphology and Classification/Pedology Soil Physics Admission Requirement In addition to the general entry requirements Applicants should possess a good Bachelor s degree in Agriculture or related disciplines form a recognized University. Preference will be given to applicants with a First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) degree. Applicants for admission to Ph.D programmes should have an MSc in the following fields: 3. Department of Horticulture MSc/M.Phil/Ph.D Vegetable Crop (Olericulture) Post Harvest Physiology Horticultural Biotechnology Seed Science and Technology Floriculture ( Ornamentals) Landscape studies: (Planning, Management, Science and Design) Fruit Crop Production (Pomology ) 11

12 Horticulture Ornamental Horticulture In addition to the general entry requirements, candidates with first degrees in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, Biological/Environmental Sciences, Forestry and Agro Forestry may be considered. Candidates with first degrees in Architecture, Planning, Geography, Fine Art, Civil Engineering and Building Technology may also be considered for programmes in Landscape Studies only but may be required to take additional courses. 4. Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and Extension M.Phil/MSc/Ph.D - Agricultural Economics Besides the general entry requirements, candidates with good degrees in Economics may also be considered. FACULTY OF RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES The faculty runs the underlisted programmes for candidates with the relevant background in subject areas like Engineering, Forestry, Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Economics and Natural Resources Management. 1. Department of Wildlife and Range Management M.Phil/Ph.D - Wildlife and Range Management 2. Department of Silviculture and Forest Management M.Phil/Ph.D - Silviculture and Forest Management 3. Department of Agroforestry MSc/M.Phil - Agroforestry 4. Department of Wood Science and Technology MSc/M.Phil - Wood Technology and Management Ph.D - Wood Technology, Wood Science, Timber Engineering, Furniture Design B. COLLEGE OF ART AND SOCIAL SCIENCES FACULTY OF FINE ART 1. Department of Art Education MA - Art Education The minimum entry requirement is the BA Art Degree M.Phil Art Education A successful completion of the BA Art programme, with a first or Second Class Upper. Second Lower holders will in addition pass at a selection interview. This is a purely research programme on an approved topic which should culminate in a thesis. In addition to the submission of the thesis, candidates must also be successful in an oral examination based on the thesis submitted. 12

13 Ph.D Art Education This is a research programme on an approved topic. The first year is based on taught courses. Normally, candidate must hold a Master s degree and must submit a research proposal acceptable to the Departmental Board. In addition the candidate must pass a selection interview. 2. Department of Painting and Sculpture MFA Painting, Sculpture and Painting/Sculpture for MFA Degree Programme Candidates must possess either a BA (Art) or BFA degree or its equivalent, preferably with First Class or Second Upper Division. Candidates with other qualifications and divisions could be admitted after an interview. MFA Metal Smithing and Jewellery Textiles Ceramics 3. Department of Communication Design MA/M.Phil/Ph.D African Art and Culture FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL ART 1. Department of Book Industry PG Diploma - Publishing Studies (1 year) MSc - Publishing Studies A good first degree in Publishing or any other discipline plus two years working experience. Selection shall be by interview FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES 1. Department of Economics MA Economics M.Phil/Ph.D Economics Candidates for MA must possess degree in Economics, Commerce, Management or any other relevant area. Admission shall be subject to an interview. 2. Department of Modern Languages M.Phil/Ph.D French M.Phil/Ph.D English Entry Requirements Usually, a first-degree in/with English or French or any modern or classical language (First or Second Class Division). Preference may be given to candidate with more than one of the above languages. 3. Department of Social Studies 13
