Van Alan Clark Jr. Library Counseling and Mental Health Services Courtyard (outside front entrance) D-Lab Mac Lab Media Stock Room Project Space Gallery School Store Katherine Lane Weems Atrium Underground Gallery Mission Hill Building Names Art Education Office Graduate Programs Office Graduate studios Post-baccalaureate studios Studio and academic classrooms Writing Center SMFA/MFA Specifics Calling the School by name: School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston SMFA (avoid the in context, e.g. applications to SMFA are due ) the School (always capitalize the S in School) Museum School (used colloquially, not in printed materials or official SMFA content) Calling the Museum by name: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MFA the Museum (always capitalize the M in Museum) Degrees Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Combined Degree (CD if not specified, or BFA + BA/BS if specified) Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Master of Arts in Teaching, Art Education (MAT) Post-baccalaureate (Post-bac) Studio Diploma (Dip) Departments and Job Titles Capitalize MFA and SMFA departments and offices only. Generic departments and offices are lowercase: Call the Business Office with questions about tuition and billing. We sent the catalog to the company s marketing office. Internal job tiles are capitalized. Chris Bratton, President of the School, met with the Director of Marketing and Communications. Exhibitions Exhibition titles are in quotes. Exhibition is the noun, exhibit is the verb: Graduating Students 2014 will be on view The 2014 exhibition is on display in the Barbara and Steven Grossman Gallery. The students exhibited their most recent works.
3 Images All artwork submitted to the Marketing and Communications department requires written approval ( is sufficient) by the artist approving the School s potential use. When sending artwork, forward the approval along with the full credit line (artist, title, year, medium). Send to smfacommunications@smfa.edu. The School has permission to use any photographs, videotape, or film in which student likenesses and/or artworks appear, without fee or compensation, in perpetuity, for future promotional and exhibition purposes. If students do not wish to have their likeness or artwork used, they must notify the Marketing and Communications office in writing at smfa-communications@smfa.edu. GRAMMAR GUIDELINES SMFA s style defaults to the AP Style Guide. Capitalization Areas at SMFA: capitalized (Painting area) Media: not capitalized: (painting, drawing, etc). Styles and schools of art when referring to a specific movement: capitalized (Abstract Expressionism, Art Deco ): Galleries and spaces of the School: capitalized (Barbara and Steven Grossman Gallery, Mrs. E. Ross Anderson Auditorium, Project Space, etc.) Seasons: not capitalized unless part of a formal title (The next Spring Sidewalk Sale will be held in the spring of The fall 2013 semester begins on September 2.) Board of governors/trustees: capitalized (SMFA Board of Governors) Committee: capitalized when part of a formal name (the SMFA Art Sale Committee). Do not capitalize in shortened versions (The committee recommended the Sale ) Web is capitalized; website is not (see also Web/Internet category) lowercase Job titles: capitalized Punctuation Commas Seasons: Do not use commas between season and year or month and year: summer 1997 or June 2004 Names: Do not use a comma before Jr. or Sr. in names (Martin Luther King Jr.) Dates: Do use a comma after the year when a month-day-year reference is given in a sentence: On June 27, 2003, they went Places: Do use commas to set off the individual elements in names of geographical places: Boston, MA, Serial: Do use commas in a series of three or more elements (painting, video, and installation) Em dashes: denote a change in thought or an emphatic pause without extra spaces: The School offers local accommodations with reduced rates for program participants. The class will be popular if it gets approval. En dashes: between times, dates, and years without extra spaces: 6 9 pm March 25 April Hyphens: use to avoid confusion or ambiguity (the fewer the better): The meeting was for smallbusiness owners. 4 Online: one word in all cases for computer connection term drop off (v) drop-offs (n): artists may drop off their work at drop-offs login (n) log in (v): I use my login name to log in to my computer Periods Followed by a single space. Time and Dates :00 should be left off: 6 9:30 pm am and pm should be written without periods in lowercase letters: 10:30 am 2:30 pm En dashes should be used between times, dates, and years: April 5 March 7, 2010 (do not use st or th : The new school year begins September 2, 2014.) Titles Books, Films, Songs, Television, Plays, Lectures, Speeches, Exhibitions, Articles Quotation marks and initial capitalization. Capitalize the, an, a if it is first or last word of the title: Gone with the Wind CBS Evening News The Glass Menagerie Periodicals (Magazines, Newspapers, Journals) Straight type Artwork credit line Italics (Name, title, year. Medium) Student, faculty or alumni artwork: Artist s name, status (student, faculty, alumnus/ae), title of work, year completed. Medium. Insert (detail) after title whenever cropping or editing an image: Untitled (detail) Exceptions: Follow credit information provided by galleries or the Museum using their requested specifications. Web/Internet Capitalized: Internet, Web Lowercase: website, , webcast, webcam URLS: use name of website (Facebook, mysmfa) rather than address (Facebook.com). Follow spelling and capitalization of website owner. FONT AND TYPE For external correspondence, always use SMFA letterhead. It is appropriate to use Times New Roman 11 pt type on letterhead. Note: SMFA does not have a new logo or font assignment at this time. For documents that do not require letterhead and internal communications, please use Arial 11 pt type. LOGO AND MASTHEADS Hi-res (300 dpi) and low-res (72 dpi) logos are available for download on the Communications page of the website: The current SMFA logo appears on our stationery letterhead in the upper right corner. Moving forward, the logo should never appear on correspondence anywhere other than upper right. All external documents (pdfs, handbooks, etc) should include the logo in the upper right corner.
5 The logo or the School s URL also appears on the back cover of all (with few exceptions) printed communication materials. Announcements, s, and non-personalized communications do not require letterhead or the SMFA logo. SIGNATURE It is not required that all staff/faculty use an signature, however, if you do, please use the following (smaller pt. size is fine): Name Title School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Phone Please do not use social icons (images) in your signature. SMFA EXHIBITIONS AND CREDIT LINES Exhibition titles are placed in quotation marks. Works of art should follow this format: Artist s name, title of work, year completed. Medium. Dimensions (if appropriate). Courtesy info (if appropriate).
