1 8/10/2012 Chemistry & Biochemistry Senior Capstone The Senior Capstone in Biochemistry is required for the Bachelor of Science degree and is designed to provide the student with laboratory research experience. Participation in research helps in choosing careers, develops mentoring relationships with faculty and other members of research groups, and is the best way to learn science. Students in the Honors College can use the senior capstone thesis toward both the Biochemistry degree and for the required Honors Thesis. A minimum of two semesters of laboratory work (including a minimum of 6 units total of BIOC 498/498H credit) is required, which begins during a student s penultimate semester. It is usually comprised of focused research work, followed by a semester of writing a thesis. Students who choose not to complete the Senior Capstone in Biochemistry can still obtain a degree in biochemistry, however they must switch to a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry (talk to your Bioc advisor). Finding a Research Faculty Mentor Students are responsible for making their own arrangements with a faculty mentor with whom to conduct research and who will oversee writing of the thesis, referred to hereafter as the Research Faculty Mentor. It is recommended that students identify a mentor no later than the semester before the senior capstone research is to begin and preferably two semesters before. For guidance on the selection process refer to Approach to Selecting a Thesis Advisor. Senior Capstone Prospectus The student, with the aid of the chosen research mentor, must write a Senior Capstone Prospectus of not more than two pages that includes: 1) a statement of the problem, 2) background information, 3) methods to be used, 4) expected outcomes, and 5) references. Students can sign up for credit with Olivia Mendoza, at the CBC Advising Office, in Old Chemistry 210C, after obtaining signatures from the proposed Research Faculty Mentor and their assigned BIOC Faculty Advisor. Students wanting to work in laboratories of a Research Faculty Mentor who is not part of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department must obtain permission from their BIOC Faculty Advisor. The process of obtaining approval of the Senior Capstone must be completed prior to the start of the first semester of research. This would normally be in the spring semester of the junior year. Laboratory Safety Training Before you will be approved to register for BIOC498(h), you will also need to pass the online laboratory safety course if you have not done so already for another independent research laboratory experience. All of the information you need to pass this course can be found at: by logging in using your UA NetID and password. Click on "Self Registration" in the blue navigation bar on the top left. Look through the list of courses offered and click on the link to "Laboratory Chemical Safety." On the Laboratory Chemical Safety course description (Step 1), click on the "Register" button. On the registration form (Step 2), complete all required registration fields (marked with a *) and then click on the "Submit" button. On the confirmation page (Step 3), click on the "Finish" button. On the registration summary page, click on "Go to Laboratory Chemical Safety" to begin the training or click on the "Done" button if you don't wish to start the training now. Once you are registered for the course, you can return as often as you like by going to "My Home" from the red navigation bar at the top left and then you will see Laboratory Chemical Safety listed in your courses. Completing the Senior Thesis There are no exams for BIOC498(h). After one semester of research, students must submit a revised Prospectus to their BIOC Faculty Advisor. The Research Faculty Mentor will work with the student as the student prepares and writes the thesis, which includes meeting several thesis milestones during the final

2 semester enrolled in BIOC498(h). The first milestone occurs at week 7 of the final semester and requires that a thesis outline be approved by your Research Faculty Mentor and your BIOC Faculty Advisor. The second milestone occurs at week 13 when the student must submit the completed sr. thesis in scientific paper format (see guideline) for approval by their BIOC Faculty Advisor. The BIOC Faculty Advisor will not read the sr. thesis - or approve it - unless the Research Faculty Mentor has first signed the title page (with date), signifying approval of the sr. thesis for both scientific content, scope of the sr. thesis, and writing style. The student should then bring the sr. thesis to their BIOC Faculty Advisor for their approval and signature. Once the sr. thesis is approved and signed by both by the Research Faculty Mentor and the BIOC Faculty Advisor, it can be turned into Olivia Mendoza, CBC Advising Office, in Old Chemistry 210C. The third milestone occurs at week 14 when the sr. thesis must be submitted to the CBC Advising Office no later than ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE LAST DAY OF CLASSES. Failure to meet this deadline could result in an incomplete for the BIOC498(h) course. Presenting the Senior Thesis in Poster Format Students graduating in the spring semester must also present a poster of their senior thesis at a special presentation sponsored by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry during the last week of classes. SUMMARY OF STEPS REQUIRED FOR THE BIOC SENIOR THESIS 1. Secure a Research Faculty Mentor and have it approved by your BIOC Faculty Advisor. 2. Discuss an arrangement for the capstone experience with your research mentor. Determine what your project should entail and what tasks you will be required to do over the next two semesters. Also, check the Honors College s web site for information regarding your thesis if you are an Honors student ( 3. Pass the online Laboratory Safety Training through the D2L website (see above). 4. At the start of your first semester complete and submit the Senior Capstone/Thesis Approval Form First Semester. 5. At the end of your first semester, your Research Faculty Mentor will assign you a grade based on the agreed upon criteria in the registration form. Before your second semester of BIOC498(h) begins, meet with your Research Faculty Mentor and review your objectives for completing the laboratory research and the sr. thesis. 6. At the start of your second semester, again, complete and submit the Senior Capstone/Thesis Approval Form Second Semester. Use the form to help you plan out your writing tasks for this semester. 7. With the help of your Research Faculty Mentor and BIOC Faculty Advisor reach each of the three milestones required to receive a passing grade in BIOC498(h): First milestone week 7: An outline of the sr. thesis must be approved and signed by both your Research Faculty Mentor. Use the sr. thesis outline approval form that is attached. Second milestone week 13: The completed sr. thesis must signed and dated by the Research Faculty Mentor and then submitted for approval by their BIOC Faculty Advisor. Third milestone week 14: The sr. thesis must be submitted to the BIOC Academic Affairs Office no later than one week prior to the last day of classes in order to receive a passing grade for BIOC498(h). 8. At the end of the semester, honors students must submit their Senior Honors Thesis to the Honors College by the last day of classes. The deadline to submit your thesis is usually one week before finals. Research advisors/mentors will assign grades for the senior experience.

Students can sign up for credit through CBC Advising Office, in Old Chemistry room 210 after obtaining signatures from the proposed Research faculty mentor and one of the members of the BIOC Faculty Advisors**. Students wanting to work in laboratories of faculty who are not part of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department must obtain permission from their Biochemistry Faculty Advisor. The process of obtaining approval of the Senior Capstone must be completed prior to the start of the first semester of research. This would normally be in the spring semester of the junior year. There are no exams for BIOC498(H). After one semester of research, students must submit a revised Prospectus to their Biochemistry Faculty Advisor. It is expected that the research faculty mentor will work with the student as the student prepares and writes the thesis. Writing should be an ongoing process during the second semester, so that there is ample time to work on the thesis drafts with input from the research faculty mentor. At least 2 weeks prior to the completion of classes for the second semester, the student must submit a thesis in scientific paper format (see guideline) for approval by the research mentor and by the Biochemistry faculty advisor. The thesis is not only the documentation of your research project, but also a scientific writing assignment. Before submission of the senior thesis, the research faculty mentor must sign the title page of the thesis (with date), signifying approval of the thesis for both scientific content, scope of the thesis, and writing style. The student should then bring the thesis to their assigned BIOC faculty advisor for their approval and signature. The BIOC faculty advisor will only approve the thesis after they have read the document. Once approved by the BIOC faculty advisor the thesis is turned in to Olivia Mendoza, located at the CBC Advising Office, Old Chemistry 210. This form is for department records. Students graduating in the spring semester must also present a poster of their senior thesis at a special presentation sponsored by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry during the last week of classes. Starting and Finishing Your Senior Capstone Research Experience 1. First, secure a Research Faculty Mentor. 2. Discuss an arrangement for the capstone experience with your research mentor. Determine what your project should entail and what tasks you will be required to do over the next two semesters. Also, check the Honors College s web site for information regarding your thesis if you are an Honors student ( 3. At the start of your first semester complete and submit the Registration Form Capstone First Semester. 4. At the end of your first semester, your research mentor will assign you a grade based on the agreed upon criteria in the registration form.
