1 2007 Nova Scotia Woodland Owner of the Year Award celebrated in style! life, tree management techniques, Alice s art gallery, and much more. It was a day well spent, blessed with sunshine despite the weather forecast! The Eastern Woodlot Owner of the Year Award was celebrated at Bob Bancroft and Alice Reed s woodlot located at Pomquet, Antigonish County on September 14 and 15, On September 14, 2007,127 school children and 12 teachers had the opportunity to meet and learn from Bob Bancroft and Alice Reed, local organizations, friends and other woodland owners, and also from the Department of Natural Resources staff, and the Department of Fisheries. They visited the property and learned about wildlife habitat management, aquatic life, tree identification, Alice s creative art depicting nature and much more. This outdoor activity provides opportunity for children to go out, exercise, explore, and reconnect with mother nature! Since September 14, two additional schools have visited Bob s property. Discussions about marine life, wildlife habitat, law enforcement, fire management, and various insects were enjoyed by both teachers and children. It was a day to remember, and almost everyone requested the Department of Natural Resources to organize and conduct such events on regular basis. Taken by Simon Mutabazi during the field day on September 14, The award presentation on September 15, 2007 was presented by David Harris, DNR Regional Director, on behalf of Honorable David Morse, Minister of Natural Resources. Prizes including the woodlot sign and the Nova Scotia Atlas book were presented to Bob Bancroft and Alice Reed. The public, mainly woodlot owners, and exhibitors from different sectors were exposed to activities including wildlife habitat management, aquatic On September 22, the Central WOYA was presented to Brian and Judy Brown by Honorable Murray Scott, the MLA of Cumberland County who congratulated the winners, and supported the DNR s education efforts. The tour provided opportunities for children to appreciate the beauty and reconnect with mother nature, and also a unique opportunity to learn about career options within the realm of natural resource management. 3 Tree Trivia Can you correctly identify the origin of these proverbs? 1. We did not inherit the land from our fathers, we are borrowing it from our children 2. A forest is not made in a single season 3. A tree of your height cannot shade you 4. A young tree bends, an old tree breaks Answers HonourablDavid Morse, Minister of Natural Resources, presented the award to the Veinotte family. In the photo, standing from left to right is Honourable Michael Baker, Minister of Finance, Kevin Veinotte, Susan Veinotte, Honourable David Morse, Mark Veinotte, Neil Veinotte and Luke Veinotte. Photo was taken by Patricia Amero. For all WOYA events, the Natural Resource Minister congratulated all the winners, their family members, and their employees. He also congratulated all nominated candidates for all the great work they ve done over the years to support and promote sound management of our natural resources. It s during this period that we were again reminded that sustainable woodlot management means sustainable livelihood for many generations! 1. American 2. Nigerian 3. Swahili 4. Hebrew Thinking of building a bat house on your woodlot? Bats provide natural pest management. A single bat is able to consume hundreds of nocturnal insects in just one hour! Building a bat house on your woodlot will help support a healthy, strong bat population, and keep pesky insect populations down. Some things to consider when building a bat house include, building the house out of rough, untreated wood, the bats need a surface to grip on the interior of the house. Place the house close to a source of water, away from bright lights, at a height of at least 12 feet, and ensure that the entrance is clear of obstructions. The bat house should be completely weather proof, as bats are sensitive to temperatures. Place the bat house so it receives a minimum of 10 hours of sunlight per day. Paint the outside of the bat house with a water based black paint to attract heat. And finally, place 2 or 3 bat houses at the same location with different solar exposure, as bats like to be able to move around according to the temperature.
