1 University of South Carolina The Darla Moore School of Business MGSC 596 Data Resource Management Instructor Dr. Kirk D. Fiedler Room 722, BA Building Phone: Office Hours: TBA and by appointment The knowledge of database technology will be invaluable in your future career in Marketing, Finance, Human Recourses or any business field. As one CEO put it recently, There s a database in everything. The demand for database practitioners continues to accelerate in every business discipline and industry. Through the use of online modeling tools, database programs, articles, and in-depth cases this class will pursue the following objectives. Course Objectives This course covers topics related to data resource management in business and is intended for two types of students: -- students who plan to concentrate in IS and pursue a career in the field; -- students with other concentrations such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource who wish to acquire more knowledge and some "hands-on" skill to make more effective use of this important information technology tool in furthering their careers. The course consists mainly of two components: the technology component and the management component. To develop a proper understanding of data resource management, the first component presents a high-level treatment of the database management systems (DBMS) technology. This component includes: 1) evolution of data management technologies; 2) the database concept; 3) the entity-relationship approach to logical data base design; 4) relational database theories; 5) referential integrity and business rules; 6) the normalization techniques for logical data base design; 7) the standard SQL database query language for relational data bases; 8) the evolution, design and development of data warehouse; 9) the role of database in electronic commerce; 10) current and future developments in data management technologies, such as object-oriented and multimedia databases. To facilitate understanding and proficiency for the first component, a number of database design exercises supported by an interactive data modeling tool will be used. In addition, PC-based Microsoft Access database software package will be used for hands-on project, and Internet tuitorials of Access and SQL. The second component of the course, which is in many ways more important than the first component, deals with the management and strategy related to the planning and deployment of database technologies in an organization. Topics to be discussed include: 1) the management of data as a resource; concept and practice; 2) the use of data as a strategic competitive tool; 3) the impact of database on accounting and auditing practice; 4) the role of database in e-business

2 5) database integrity and security; 6) the role of database administrator (DBA) and data administrator (DA); 7) strategic enterprise data architectural planning methodologies; 8) the role of database in business process change.
