2 Asbestos facts Millions of tonnes of asbestos were imported into the UK between the 1930s and 1970s. It was used extensively in building and industry. Although it was known to be hazardous before World War II it continued to be used for decades. Most of the asbestos imported is still present in schools, factories, shops and homes. The UK has one of the highest incidences of asbestos related diseases in the world. The rate of diagnosis of asbestos related illnesses continues to rise. Asbestos is still affecting many people decades after they were exposed to it. It is possible to be affected even if you have never worked with asbestos yourself. If you are worried, you should seek expert help immediately.
3 Asbestos related illnesses Most people exposed to asbestos will never suffer any adverse effects. For some, however, their body reacts to the asbestos and they may develop: Mesothelioma An aggressive asbestos related cancer of the lungs, abdomen or even testicles. Mesothelioma can affect workers, family members and people who came into contact with asbestos in the environment, e.g. at school. Lung cancer The risks of lung cancer increase for those exposed to high levels of asbestos over a prolonged period. The disease is rarely linked to asbestos by doctors, so expert advice is needed. Asbestosis Fibrosis of the lungs causing breathlessness in those exposed to high levels of asbestos over prolonged periods. Pleural thickening Widespread areas of thickening in the lungs which can cause breathlessness. Pleural plaques Areas of scarring on the lungs. Almost always asymptomatic.
