Description of course: This course is designed to prepare students for clinical practice. Instruction includes lectures, videos, power-point presentations, outside speakers etc. to introduce students to all of the surgical specialties. 2. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Principles & Practices of Surgical Technology and Pharmacology for Health Professionals and Final Lab Practical. 3. Credit hours: 5 Semester Hours, 5 Lecture Hours 4. General statement of the primary purpose or overview of the course including students for whom intended: This course is intended for students who have completed the first semester of the Surgical Technology program and plan to complete the program and take the certification exam. 5. Specific objectives or competencies to be developed: General Surgery Identify the anatomical regions and structures of the abdominal wall. Discuss specific elements of case planning for abdominal wall hernias including instruments and repair materials. Describe basic pathology related to abdominal wall weakness. Describe common procedures used to correct abdominal wall hernias. Identify key anatomical structures of the gastrointestinal system. Discuss common diagnostic procedures of the gastrointestinal system. 1

Describe common techniques used in gastrointestinal surgery including anastomosis and bowel technique. Discuss common surgical procedures of the gastrointestinal system. List and describe common surgical procedures of the breast. Minimally Invasive Endoscopic and Robotic-Assisted Surgery Discuss the advantages and constraints of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Describe the preparation of the patient for MIS. Describe the function of each component of the imaging equipment used in MIS. Discuss the care of a rigid endoscope. Describe the surgical technique used for insufflation in laparoscopy. List he risks associated with insufflations. Students are encouraged to be conscientious and exercise responsibility in their work. The instructor should be consulted when difficulties are encountered with the course work and/or attendance. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Students are required to be present and punctual for all classes, labs, and exams. 2. There are only 3 excused absences: Court summons/duty Family death/critical situation Documented illness/accident If there is an absence, a student must: Call the instructor 30 minutes prior to class time (leave message on Program Directors voic ). Do not have another student tell the instructor, please call for yourself. Consequences of an absence: 2 tardies equal one absence 2 absences drop a grade by one grade (either excused or unexcused) Each single absence after 2, drops a grade by one grade 4. Unexcused absences disallow a student to make up exams. The missed exam counts as a 0". Excused absences will warrant a student to be issued a makeup exam. This exam will not be the same as the original exam. Time of makeup exam will be at the instructor s decision. It is up to the student to schedule the exam. If not scheduled within one week of initial exam, it can t be made up and will count as 0". The instructor will not issue notes, handouts, etc. from missed labs, or lecture. It is the student s responsibility to obtain them from another student. Quizzes cannot be made up. 9

Northstar Learning Online Homework = 15 pts A, 10 pts B, 5 pts C (Monday Friday to complete) Exams: 9 chapter exams will be announced. One final will be given at the end of the semester. Quizzes: May be given announced or unannounced. Values will be decided by the instructor. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES.
