1 NORWAY -powered by nature We help generate sustainable business from renewable energy NORWAY ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
2 NORWAY -powered by nature HYWIND - the world s first full-scale floating wind turbine Norway is blessed with In 2009, Statoil installed the world s first full-scale floating wind turbine ample sources of energy, and ten kilometers offshore of southwest Norway. The Hywind demonstration over centuries we have built our unit draws upon Statoil s longstanding offshore experience, combining industries around harnessing wind industry technologies with those of the oil and gas industry. and leveraging their power. Norway is one of the world s primary offshore Hywind consists of a turbine placed on top of a ballasted steel energy producers, and Norwegian offshore expertise is highly valued around The concept is perfectly adapted to deep waters close to major cylinder, which is anchored to the seabed with three mooring lines. the world. Hydropower engineered our power consuming regions. industrial development, and powers 96 percent of our electricity. With one of After three years of testing, the concept has been verified, and the world s longest coastlines, we also have Hywind continues to perform beyond expectations. The next formidable potential for offshore wind power. step is to develop small pilot parks, and Statoil is currently Norwegian companies develop innovative assessing locations for parks of 3-5 turbines. technologies for harnessing wind, ocean tides, osmosis, sun and more. Enova SF granted EUR 7.6 million in support of the Hywind pilot. A number of public financial schemes help foster development of new renewable energy. Inside this folder are a few examples of projects currently under way. Photo, front page: Statoil
3 FLUMILL - turning tidal currents into sustainable energy Tidal energy is a predictable and environmentally friendly energy source with large potential. Made from light-weight materials with inherent buoyancy, the Flumill tidal energy mill can be towed to site, submerged and easily installed. The mill consists of two counter-rotating helixes, made from low weight composite materials and moored to a steel structure, which is attached to the seabed. A top fin controls the operational angle of the helixes, holds the turbines, and supports the upper bearings. The helixes rotation speed is restricted by the speed of the tidal current, thus ensuring no harm to marine fauna and overall limited environmental impact. The Flumill system has been thoroughly tested and a full-scale pilot is now ready for deployment in northern Norway. Throughout its development from idea to full-scale realization, Flumill has received research and development grants from The Research Council of Norway, Innovation Norway, and Enova SF. 4 KITEMILL - harnessing high altitude winds Kites have been used in science and play since time immemorial, but only lately have they held a stake in the energy game. Kitemill has partnered with a major defense and aerospace company to develop efficient and economical kite turbines. Kitemill predicts that these air borne wind turbines can produce energy cheaper than coal fired plants unsubsidized and completely clean. Kitemill s turbine comprises an airborne wing, which is tethered to a regenerative winch placed at ground level. Energy is generated as this aircraft is reeled in and out. While the tether determines how high and far the aircraft can fly, airborne wind craft generally fly above other wind turbines, to altitudes where the winds are stronger and more consistent, whether on- or offshore. The kite turbine is therefore less site-sensitive and can e.g. tap into locations that have open grid capacity, but are unsuitable for other energy sources. The lighter the aircraft is, without compromising its aerodynamic efficiency, the more excessive lift goes into energy production. Only in the past decade have new materials and auto-piloting technology become available for nonmilitary use. Kitemill s turbine requires a mere tenth of the materials used in an equivalent wind turbine. Kitemill is in the process of developing its first demonstrator. The company has received grants from The Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway. Artist s impression, Colours for Kitemill.
5 We all have a stake in attaining a more sustainable future. In Norway, public funding agencies work together to help turn ideas into research, research into innovation, and innovation into more efficient production and consumption of energy: The Research Council of Norway is a national strategic and funding agency for research activities, and an advisor on research policy to the government, the central government administration and the overall research community. Innovation Norway is the government s chief instrument for innovation and development of Norwegian industry, helps companies leverage their competitive advantage, and serves as Norway s official trade representative abroad. Enova is a governmental agency responsible for promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy and climate technology. Enova manages the Norwegian Energy Fund of more than EUR 4.3 billion.
