To live in a thriving community? United Way staff, volunteers and partners have been asking this question in various forms for the past three years. We began by using the words financial stability, but quickly found the term itself problematic. To some it means paying bills and meeting basic needs, to others it means many things beyond the basics. Money itself often isn t top of mind when people talk about what s important to them. We ve heard a lot about public spaces and general upkeep of property. We ve heard about health, including food and nutrition, diet and exercise, substance abuse and other high risk behaviors. We ve heard about education and training, hope and pride. After conducting a conversation earlier this month, I reviewed notes from other conversations over the past year and I believe we need to spend a lot more time encouraging people to focus on what they directly experience rather than on reciting things they think they know from secondhand sources. The fact is, comments from all groups that relate to direct experiences are far more positive than comments based on assumptions about others. Perhaps that s one reason the issue of trust often comes up. Even in a relatively small community, we are very much divided into like-minded groups. We picked up the term thrive from another United Way and are hoping that it helps people better describe what they value, individually and collectively as a community. The need for more economic activity both as a source of employment and for consumption is frequent. Venues for entertainment and recreation are desired universally. More infrastructure to support walking, biking and public gardening is often mentioned. At United Way, we ve adopted the term THRIVE as a call to action around this community work. When children enter school ready to learn and graduate ready to continue training or enter the workforce; when emergency assistance is available; when people have access to health and also adopt a healthy lifestyle; when employers have a qualified pool of job applicants; when economic demand and a ready workforce lead to business investment; when economic growth leads to additional investments in infrastructure; when individuals and families see opportunity available, lives will change. I believe all of these things are happening, but slowly and in pockets. Change certainly hasn t yet reached a level to tip the community s collective vision, and it doesn t reflect the reality of too many people who live here. But each of us can participate in the creation of a thriving community. And we can volunteer, give, advocate on behalf of the good work all around us. United Way s THRIVE initiative is working to make it easier for everyone to do just that. Nancy Vaughan, President United Way of Madison County

MADISON COUNTY THRIVE A COMMUNITY WITH A CAUSE This year, United Way of Madison County is embarking on a bold, new community call to action Madison County THRIVE. Madison County THRIVE is not a new initiative or program. It is an evolution in our approach to supporting hard-working, lower income families in their own efforts to achieve what every family wants and needs to THRIVE: Good jobs with good wages Financial stability Success for their children WHY THRIVE FOCUSES ON GOOD JOBS WITH GOOD WAGES & FINANCIAL STABILITY 42% of county households struggle with poverty and are unable to earn enough to afford their families basic needs.* - HUD, NACARRA, USDA, BLS, IRS, and state treasury Families in our community are living on the edge, surviving paycheck-to-paycheck, unable or barely able to meet their expenses and just one doctor s visit or car problem away from crisis. They work, sometimes two or three jobs that pay low wages, but lack the means to better their situations. WHY THRIVE FOCUSES ON SUCCESS FOR CHILDREN Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3-4 times more likely to drop out in later years. - National Adult Literacy Survey, (1002) NCES, U.S. Department of Education 70% of the children in our county started kindergarten without the skills needed to succeed in school last year. Children who begin school behind often stay behind and are at higher risk of dropping out. Without an education they face a lifetime of struggle. The cycle can be broken by preparing our youngest children with the skills needed to be successful in school. Because when a child succeeds in school, it can set them, no matter their background, on the path to success. WHAT WILL UNITED WAY THRIVE OFFER MADISON COUNTY FAMILIES AND CHILDREN? Birth to Kindergarten supports that reach families and child care providers Employment training, financial skills, micro loans and more to build financial futures Emergency assistance and connection to services when the unexpected happens This is why United Way will be focusing its work around one broad goal we call Madison County THRIVE in the years ahead. When individuals THRIVE, so does our community.

Two years ago Tony Sovern was working in a factory as a machine operator when he along with many co-workers were laid off. Each hoped the return to work call would come, but it never did. For the next two years, amidst a struggling local economy, Tony was only able to land part-time jobs that paid minimum wage. Things were tight and getting tighter as Tony and his wife welcomed a new baby to the family. He knew he needed a new stable job that paid more so that he could support and make the future better for his family. While filing for unemployment, Tony noticed a sign on the wall about the adult welding program at Hinds Career Center in Elwood. He decided to go for it and within 5 days he was enrolled in the program. The program turned out to be a great fit for Tony and his goals. I ve always been good with my hands. I like seeing the pieces of things come together. Tony continues, The program has completely changed my life. When I finish and get a new job in welding, I will be making more like $18 an hour and that will make things better for my family. Hind s 12-week welding course is just one example of several ways that the partners of United Way s Financial Stability Partnership group are working together throughout the county to provide opportunities for individuals to increase their income, build savings, and gain and sustain assets. Obtaining a job that pays a family-sustaining wage is the key to financial stability. Without a job, families cannot put food on the table, let alone plan for the future or achieve financial security. Working together, the Financial Stability group is offering numerous opportunities including job training and certifications, return-to-school supports, personal finance education, small business financing and employment partnerships with local businesses. United Way knows that the beginning of Tony s story mirrors many throughout our community over the last 15 years and that s why our focus on financial stability efforts is so important to our community. When individuals like Tony seize these opportunities, they make their family more financially stable and the entire community wins. In the words of Tony, If you take advantage of the opportunities, the possibilities are limitless. MADISON COUNTY THRIVE A COMMUNITY WITH A CAUSE

If you take advantage of the opportunities, the possibilities are limitless. - Tony Sovern

The goal of the program isn t simply to teach parents new skills, but to get them thoroughly engaged in preparing their children for success in school while achieving their own educational goals and growing their job opportunities. - Lynn Silvey

Be prepared. It s more than the Boy Scout motto. It s a key to success in school for our community s children that starts the day they are born. Last year, 70% of Madison County kindergarteners came to school without the skills they needed to be successful. United Way s Born Learning Connection provides multiple opportunities to prepare our youngest children for success in school and life. Two of the greatest roles in preparing our community s children for success in school are played by parents and caregivers. Born Learning offers several supports and learning opportunities for both groups. Parents can take advantage of free Literacy Basket Parties, Blast Off to Kindergarten and Countdown to Blast Off events. Each offering is designed to help parents learn ways to engage with their children while encouraging important early learning skills all before the age of 5. Caregivers can utilize a powerful program designed just for them, Born Learning s T.O.T.E.S program. The T.O.T.E.S (Taking on Tomorrow s Educational Success) program started as a free educational lending program for home-based childcare providers. In Madison County, more than 50% of children under age 5 are cared for by a family member, friend or neighbor while parents go to work or school, shares Karen Hemberger, Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Madison County. These providers are a safe and affordable option for hard-working families but the providers often don t have the resources to support early learning and literacy development for the children in their care. The T.O.T.E.S. program provides those resources and support for free. Totes are filled with fun and informative tools to share literacy and learning experiences with the children in their care. Born Learning Coordinators deliver the totes and exchange them with new ones regularly. The program has already enabled 24 providers in Madison County to introduce early learning activities into their daily interactions with children. In 2014, thanks to a grant from the Dollar General Foundation, the T.O.T.E.S. program will expand. As a pilot, it will be available to parents who are working to complete their adult basic education while raising young children in Elwood. The expanded program will be available through Born Learning s local Countdown to Blast Off events. Lynn Silvey, one of Born Learning s Coordinators said, The goal of this program isn t simply to teach parents new skills, but to get them thoroughly engaged in preparing their children for success in school while achieving their own educational goals and growing their job opportunities.
