Electronic Recycling 101 Class 59 of the Metro Area Master Recycler Program April 22, e-waste asset recovery u-waste commodities
State of Oregon Recycling 101 In the late 60s and early 70s, Governor Tom McCall leads the charge for a cleaner and greener Oregon. Among his accomplishments: The Open Beach Bill Cleaning up the Willamette River Forming the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) The Beverage Container Act, aka, The Oregon Bottle Bill Continuing this go-green legislative agenda, the Oregon E-cycles Consumer Takeback Program is implemented on 01/01/09, banning certain consumer electronics from Oregon landfill disposal. Jan 1, 2010: landfill ban enforcement begins on all TVs, monitors, laptops and computers Jan 1, 2015: mice, keyboards and printers are added to the covered electronic device (CED) complement
Why Recycle Your Electronics? Original Electronic Manufacturers (OEMs) produce 1.8 billion electronic devices per year, and ewaste is expected to grow 8% annually indefinitely. So why should we recycle? Well It s the responsible things to do It s getting easier and easier to do It s good for the environment (duh!) Resource savings are HUGE It s the law (in 25 states) Recycling may or may not save the world, BUT if you can use less, re-use something, find a new purpose for it, or not purchase it at all, why not? That just makes good sense.
URT Steps Into the Arena (circa 2003) Processing facilities located in OR, WI, TX and NH e-stewards, ISO 9001 and certified National leader in CRT glass-to-glass recycling National educator in universal and electronic waste management Nation-wide, URT provides services in electronics recycling, universal recycling, IT asset disposition and commodities re-sale Clackamas (OR) facility processes more than 16M pounds of ewaste and uwaste annually Clackamas (OR) facility received the 2013 Recycler of the Year award from the Association of Oregon Recyclers (AOR)
Certifications (AKA, Our Street Cred ) ISO 14001:2004 & ISO 9001:2008 The ISO standard recognizes the consistent application and success of a company s environmental healthy and safety management system. The ISO 9001 standard recognizes the overall company quality management system. It demonstrates the company s commitment and ability to deliver superior quality and customer satisfaction. e-stewards Certification The e-stewards certification, created by the Basel Action Network (BAN), formally recognizes electronics recyclers that adhere to the highest environmentally and socially responsible practices when recovering materials from electronic scrap. It is the only electronics recycling standard that bans all exports of hazardous electronic waste to developing countries, and prohibits the use of prison labor and dumping in local landfills. Microsoft Registered Refurbisher This certification allows the company to install Microsoft operating systems and software.
Electronic Waste and the Environment Electronic devices require a wide range of raw minerals that must be extracted from the planet. Below is a small sample of how they are used. Lots of not-so-safe stuff. Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT glass) Lead Barium PCBs (made prior to 1980) Circuit Boards Lead Chromium Cadmium Mercury Beryllium
National ewaste Trends Key Findings on the Management of Select Electronic Products in the U.S. in million new consumer electronics were sold 5 million tons of electronics were in storage 2.37 million tons of electronics were ready for end-of-life management and/or destruction Only 25% of this tonnage was collected for recycling (Source: US EPA)
National ewaste Trends (cont d) Worldwide electronic sales topped $1 trillion in 2012 Sales of traditional consumer electronics fell as smartphones, tablets and e-readers emerged as the leaders most families owning more than one of each Materials sold versus materials being collected for recycling is underwhelming, US EPA.
People Love Watching TV (Really!) Global purchase of new TVs in 2011 Type LCD Televisions Plasma Televisions CRT Televisions TOTAL #/Units shipped 295 Million 27 Million 36 Million 358 Million U.S. population in 2011: million
The Other Stuff Just Sitting Around TVs and monitors get most of the recycling attention for two primary reasons: they make up 80-90% of the recycled ewaste mix, and since they are bigger than laptops, tablets or cell phones, they have more material (i.e., precious metal, plastic, CRT glass, wiring, etc.) that needs to be harvested then recycled/re-sold. Consumers hold on to the other 10-20% for a myriad of reasons. For the moment, SmartPhones are the flavor-ofthe-month when it comes to electronic purchases. In 2005, 3.8M SmartPhones were sold in the U.S. The projection for 2015 comes in at 51M+ in sales. A study in 2012 found that 61% of U.S. consumers kept their old cell phones. 41% had 1 to 2 phones, 9% had 3 and 11% had 4 or more. It s hard to recycle something when it s sitting in a junk drawer or in the playroom of your toddler. Americans LOVE their gadgets.
How URT is Making a Difference Work with State and Federal legislative bodies in an effort to create or endorse laws that prevent e- waste from going to the landfills Create grassroots initiatives and solutions for handling and disposal of e-waste Provide convenient, one-stop, Statewide locations for disposal of e-waste BOOYAH! Understand the problem, help create the solution by providing education and outreach initiatives
