3 What the hell is facebook anyway? Accourding to Wikipedia.com, «Facebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc., with more than 400 million active users in February Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. The website's name stems from the colloquial name of books given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Anyone age 13 or older can become a Facebook user.» Okay, that sounds cool and all, but what does that all mean? Right about now it means that facebook gets 4 X more traffic than google.com, everyone AND their mother is on it, AND if facebook was it's own country it'd be the 3rd largest country in the world! What facebook is not - Facebook is NOT another myspace.com! It's not a place to find a replacement for your spouse. It's not for 'hooking up.' It's not for Kids. (There are more adults between on here than other medium on the planet!) Simply put, FB is a place where everyone can communicate with each other, and share almost every aspect of thier lives. You can share stories, thoughts, pics, videos, websites and just about anything else you can upload to the web. Why should I use facebook? Simply put, «Because all your students and future students are there!» What makes it so cool is that it is completely 'viral'; based on how many friends you have and how many friends that your friends have you have the ability to get a message/thought/pic out to tens if not hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of minutes all without spending a single dollar. Once you learn how to harness this power of Facebook's numbers and see the results, you'll never want to send out a direct mail piece of pay for a pennysaver ad ever again. 4 Getting Started Your Personal Page Facebook makes it quite simple for anyone to do this. Takes about 5 minutes. All you need to do is follow the steps on the main page; After you have followed the initial steps, start importing your list and see who you know who s already on. Chances are if you re just doing this now, YOU are the only one on your list who wasn t on the site. Not anymore! Welcome to the wonderful world of Facebook. Aren t you glad you re no longer stuck under a rock? Create Your Account Your School's Business Page Another very easy, self- explanatory set- up. Again, facebook makes it pretty easy for anyone to do this. From the main Facebook.com site, click the link on the bottom right which reads: Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business. 5 Create Your School's Business Page Create an Administrator Go to the «People Like This» section and click on the actual name if you can see it there, or click «See All» and run throught the list until you find the person whom you want to make an administrator. Click their name and click «Close» and your done! They can now check their 'pages' on their account and can now update your Business's page. Full Contact Online Marketing 5
6 WARNING!!! Your school's business page can also have several administators. If you are not very 'facebook savvy' you may decide to dedicate an employee to updating and populating your facebook business page. But be warned YOU as the owner must create the page and retain ownwership of it. This way, if they employee quits or gets fired, you can easily revoke thier administrative access immediately. If you let them open the account, they could in turn...remove YOU! We have all heard horror stories of students building websites for their instructors, only to quit the school one day and take the website with them! Always retain full control of your facebook page! 7 8 Killer Student-Getting Strategies Search Okay, let's assume you already have one of our websites or at least a website that has the ability to capture names and s of prospective students. (If you don't then stop reading this, cause it ain't gonna help you much at all!) As soon as you receive a prospects name/ , plug it into the search bar on the top of facebook and hit the enter button. 9 times out of 10, you will actually find that person on facebook. We started doing this in 2009 and we were only finding about 6 out of 10, but since more and more people use facebook, we're finding almost everyone. So now you've found them...now what? Friend Request This part is super- easy. But before you start friend requesting all your prospects, you've gotta take care of one thing. You see, people get friend requests almost everyday, at least I know I do. But I also know that I'm not gonna click 'accept' if I don't know them or think they are relevant to me or my business. So here's what you do; before you hit 'send' add a little personalized message. Something like this; Hey Jane, I saw that you just [purchased one of our online specials, were looking for info from our ABC Martial Arts Website, etc.] and I just wanted to 'Hi' and tell you to hit me up with a call at the Center/Academy/School so I can [arrange your first class, give you a tour, show you around, etc.]. I'm usually in from 12-9 pm, but leave me a message if I'm not in and I'll text you back. TTYL. Joe Karate A message like this will let your prospect know who you are and greatly increase the odd of them accepting your friend request. Now you can begin a relationship with this person and convince them that yours is the only academy to train in! Full Contact Online Marketing 7
8 Keyboard Flip This one is truly one of the most powerful 'facebook moves' you can make. Picture this; you've just enrolled Jane. Your in the office or at the front desk. You've just competed her first class and she loved it. Apparently enough to sign up right? Ask her what she liked best about it. Tell her 'that's awesome!' Now ask her for a favor. Since you already know she's on facebook (see above techniques) flip the keyboard around to her side of the desk and ask her to do you a solid and please post that (what she just said) on her facebook page. She'll do it 10 out of 10 times, unless she's pressed for time, in that case you can catch her next time, but don't forget! Oh yeah, don't forget to also have her post your website link at the end of her posts. This way all her 547 friends will read that she just joined your school and how kick ass it was. AND they'll also see just how to find you and join up themselves. ;) Photo/Video Tag This one is a no- brainer. Since we are harnessing the power of social media, media being the keyword here, it's important that you take photos and video of class. Now you've caught this great pic of Jane just whaling the bag. Cool. Upload it to a photo album that you create on your page (just follow the simple directions on the photo tab) or send them Full Contact Online Marketing 8
9 to us if you have a website that we have a main FB page for, i.e., ilovekickboxing.com, trainmmatoday.com, KidsMartialArts.com, AdultMartialArts.com, etc. Quick note: when you take pics, take one's like this, where you actually feature a person. Don't take one's like this one here, where you can't actually recognize anyone, it's just a bunch of bodies in a big room. Then, click the 'Tag' botton and select Jane Smith fromt the list. Now that you've done that, Jane's pic will appear on your business pages's profile, but more importantly, it'll appear on Jane's profile for all her friends to see! Just make sure that you use your website name and school name in the name/description section of the photo when Full Contact Online Marketing 9
10 you upload it. Failure to do this will result in your computer exploding. No, seriously, if you don't add that info, then you're almost wasting your time putting the pic up. Jane's friends need to see the pic and then be able to click the link to your school when they see it. BTW when you post your links, don't post them in the format. Use is the correct way to post. In some places if you only use www, then your link may not be clickable. Do the same thing with videos. Cool thing about video is that you can get more students appearing in one :30-2:00 video clip than you can in one photo. Here are some other bits of info you'll need to do this successfully. Don't take bad pics of good people. People have the right to 'un tag' themselves on a photo. Thereby rendering your secret plans ineffective. If Jane has a gigantic butt (but has come to you to help her lose it)...don't highlight it with a photo. Choose your subject matter carefully and get people at their best. Don't do this every day. One a week or everyother week is great for some school pics. It'll get ridiculous after awhile and lose it's impact if you do it every day. And in case you're wondering, there is no limit to the number of pics you can put in a photo album. But to make things easy, name your photo albums accourdingly. Make them easy for people to find things. Seperate them by Events, Dates, Activities, etc. Little Dragon Kids, ilovekickboxing.com, Summer Picnic 2010, etc. Status Update Here is where you get a chance to tell your friends, fans and basically the world just what is on your mind today. More importantly, it's what you want to be on their minds, if you get my meaning. For your business page, you need to include things like motivational quotes (I see people do this ad naseum don't. Ilt's corny. Anyone can copy an paste quotes) inspirational messages, facts about fitness, working out, etc. Ask provocative questions. Ask people's opinions about a topic. The idea is that you want people to answer you back in the comment section for the status update. Once you post this update, after a few minutes to a few hours, it'll be pushed down on the news feed. But once someone comments on it, it goes straight to the top again. This way, Full Contact Online Marketing 10
11 one status update can stay on the top all day, provided that you've got tons of people commenting on it. Pretty cool, right? You should also update your status 3-4 times per day. Think of it like breakfast, lunch, dinner, late- night snack! «Could you do me a favor please?» Now you've got tons of friends and fans and you've been supplying them with cool stuff, motivational stuff, food facts, heath nuggets, instructional video clips, etc. It's time to ask for a little 'reciprocity'. As human's we're reciprical by nature. Someone holds the door for your, you feel it necessary to reciprocate and say 'thank you'. Unless you live in one of the rude states in the North East, right ;) Just kidding, we're based outta new york and NY'ers are as nice as they come. So you've given all this great 'content', time to call in a favor. A message to your fans/friends Hey, I hope you're digging our page with all the cool stuff we put up for you! Would you mind doing me a quick favor? We want to get our message out to as many people as possible so would you lend a hand by posting something nice (and short, lol) about us on your page and include our link? I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks so much, Joe K. Not all of them will, but if you do it this way and follow all these steps, you'll secure the hightest percentage. Somedays we have literally do this for us. If they all have 200+ friends (most people do) well you can do the math. It's a ton of people seeing your link and nice words about your school. Page Suggestions This will probably be the most time- consuming, especially if you have hundreds of friends. On your business page on the top left underneath your profile picture, there is link that reads: Suggest to friends. After you click the link, a box with a list of all your friends comes up. All you have to do is select the friends you want to suggest your page to (i.e. EVERYONE!). After you do this, have your friends do the same and so on and so on. The more suggestions, the more exposure! Full Contact Online Marketing 11
12 Wall Blast This is something you could do everyday and all throughout the day. Three easy steps: Step one: Pick one of your students. Step two: Think of something nice to say about them. (i.e. Great job in class today! or Looking forward to seeing you in class tonight! ) Step three: Update your status to the following; Quick Note: here s another variation; Smith! Looking forward to seeing you in class tonight! Any friends wanna join her? Check out how you can get started right away at By adding symbol in a status, you can tag your friends and have that status not only show up on the Live Feed, but also on their page as well. You can do this for every one of your students all throughout the day and essentially market your site right there on their profile pages. If your student has 200 friends, well that s 200 potential new students who will see your site! Conclusion With over 500,000,000 people on facebook at the time this book was written, it's clear that facebook is here to stay. Although you may not become a total facebook 'addict' personally, your school will benefit greatly if you utilize these very simple tools outlined here.
