32 nd National Medical Students Conference COMPETION RULES FOR THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE CONTEST This year, as is tradition, the 6 th year medical students from the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) are organizing the 32 nd National Medical Students Conference (CNEM) and at the same time celebrating the 10 th International Edition of the Conference. Once again, the aim of the conference is to promote interest in the medical field. As last year, we would like to offer the opportunity of participating to students studying other Health Science- related Degrees such as Pharmacy, Nursing, Psychology, Chiropody, Biology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The multidisciplinary approach to the disease and the patient has become a priority in recent years. The Scientific Committee would like to invite students from National and International Medical Schools and other Health Science- related Schools to take part in this conference both as speakers and guests. CATEGORIES: The speakers enter for the following awards: Awards given by the Scientific Committee: 1. Best Oral Presentation Award. This award will depend on the resources available at the time and/or the amount of participants and will be given by the Scientific Committee according to the competition rules for this category. These are described further below in this document and are posted on the CNEM website. 2. Best Clinical Case Poster Award. The Scientific Committee will give this award to the Best Clinical Case Poster after the student s presentation. This year, the Organizing Committee has made the decision to change the features of the poster: it must now show a clinical case. This is a good opportunity for students to bring to the conference the most interesting clinical cases they have seen during their clinical attachments.
This is also a good experience for students so they can begin doing presentations in front of a large number of people specialized in the Health Science field. The competition rules for this category will be posted in the CNEM website. Other awards that are NOT given by the Scientific Committee: 1. The Dean of Medicine Award: the judging panel appointed by the Dean of Medicine will choose the winner according to certain criteria, which will be posted on the CNEM website. To enter for this award it will be compulsory to also participate in the Scientific Committee Contest entering the competition with an Oral Presentation. 2. The Neuroscience Institute (CSIC- UMH) Award: the judging panel appointed by the Neuroscience Institute will choose the winner according to certain criteria, which will be posted on the CNEM website. To enter for this award it will be compulsory to participate in the Scientific Committee Contest entering the competition with an Oral Presentation. Extra- Miguel Hernandez University Special Mention The Scientific Committee will select a project by a student coming from a different Spanish university or International University according to their own criteria. This student will be presented with a special certificate for participating and attending the 32 nd National Medical Students Conference. This is a way of thanking the effort made by the students from other universities and promoting the diversity of students at our conference. *This award can concur with the Best Oral Presentation award or the Best Clinical Case Poster award if the Scientific Committee considers so. N.B.: Members of the Organizing Committee can participate in both categories of the contest but will not be awarded a prize. However, they can enter for the Dean of Medicine Award and the Neuroscience Institute (CSIC- UMH) Award (this decision was made by the Scientific Committee on January 30 th 2014 with an absolute majority of the votes taken). To enter the Dean of Medicine Award and the Neuroscience Institute (CSIC- UMH) Award competitions it is compulsory to participate in the Best Oral Presentation category of the Scientific Committee Contest. The Neuroscience Institute (CSIC- UMH) Award is only for projects that relate directly to neuroscience. A student s work may be granted several awards; the Scientific and Agencies Committees reserve the right to change the prizes given. If any form of plagiarism is detected within a project, it will be automatically disqualified.
COMPETITION RULES 1. Students from all years of Medical School and other Health Science- related schools can enter. 2. The official languages for the 32 nd National Medical Students Conference (CNEM) are Spanish and English. Oral Presentations and Poster presentations can be in either of these two languages. However, the Scientific Committee stipulates that the Poster itself and the presentation material used to supplement the Oral Presentation must be submitted in ENGLISH. This helps the understanding of people from other countries. 3. To participate in the Best Oral Presentation category it is necessary to submit a scientific article first. However, it will not be necessary to submit an additional written text for the Best Clinical Case Poster category but it will be necessary to submit the poster in PDF format before the deadline described below. 4. Each Oral Presentation project may have a maximum of four authors and at least one tutor. 5. Each Clinical Case Poster project may have a maximum of two authors and at least one tutor. 6. The scientific article for the Oral Presentation category may occupy a maximum of 4 sheets (plus a title page) plus an appendix containing graphs and tables. The length of the appendix is unlimited. For more information please read the appendix of Style Form Rules, which will be posted on the CNEM website. 7. The Scientific Committee emphasizes the fact that the authors have to send the complete article, not just the abstract. This is necessary to be able to evaluate the project properly. SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE CONTENTS FOR THE BEST ORAL PRESENTATION CATEGORY: TITLE PAGE Project s title.
Name and surname of the authors and the tutor. It also must state a telephone number, the e- mail address of the authors and the academic year of their degree as at October The name of the author with whom we shall communicate must be underlined. Name of the University and country of origin. PARTS OF THE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE The following information must be included: Title. Authors: the first surname must be followed by the initial/s of the name/s. (i.e. Mary Smith = Smith M.) Introduction. Materials and methods. Results. Discussion (it can be included in the Conclusion). Conclusion. The following guidelines contain information about what each section of the article should include: 1. INTRODUCTION: The introduction must establish the context or background information for the research (i.e. main problem and rationale) and also state the purpose of the work. Both primary and secondary outcomes must be clear. 2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This section should include only the information researched before the outcomes were defined. All information obtained during the performance of the research itself should be included in the section Results. Research procedures: Observational study: - Systematic review of the literature: the databases searched must be stated, as well as all the papers used and the description of the study population (if any). - A clinical case or case- series: it must include the classification (inpatient, outpatient), the period in which the study takes place, the case description and the patient s evolution and treatment. - Case Control Studies: the description of the study (retrospective or prospective), the study population (selection procedure, inclusion / exclusion criteria, sample size, etc.) and the statistical methods used must all be included. - Cohort studies: as above. Experimental Research:
This section must include the description of the type of study (multicentre, clinical practice, institutional, etc.), the design (the randomization, the masking, etc.), the study population (sample size, selection procedure and inclusion / exclusion criteria), the statistical and experimental methods and the measures of the results. Selection and description of study participants In this section the selection process of the subjects under observation or experimentation (patients or laboratory animals, including controls) must be stated, including the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, and the description of the origin of the subjects. Because the importance of variables such as age and sex is not always clear for the purpose of the research, authors should explain their use when they are included in the study; for example, authors should explain why only subjects of certain ages were included or why women were excluded. Technical Information. The author should: Identify all methods, equipment and procedures used. Give references to the usual methods, including statistical methods. List all the drugs and chemicals used, including generic names, doses and routes of administration. Statistics: The autor should: Describe statistic methods. Quantify the results, when possible, and present them with the appropriate indicators of measurement error or uncertainty (such as confidence intervals). Avoid relying solely on statistical hypothesis testing, such as the use of P values, which don t provide information on the magnitude of the effect. 3. RESULTS: The autor should: Present the results in a logical sequence in the text and with the most important findings highlighted. Not repeat the data included in the tables or graphs. Attach the most representative graphs and tables (in the appendix). Emphasize or summarize the most important observations. Give numeric results in the Results section (for example, percentages) but also present the absolute values from which they were calculated. 4. DISCUSSION (as already specified, may be included in the Conclusion section): The author should: Highlight the new and important aspects of the research and the conclusion.
Not repeat in detail the data or other material appearing in the introduction or in the section Results. Assess the limitations and weaknesses of the study conducted. Expose the limitations of the study, and explore the implications of the results for future research and clinical practice. Link the conclusions with the primary outcomes of the study but avoid categorical statements and not draw conclusions that are not adequately supported by the data. Avoid statements of aspects of the research that have not been completed. Introduce any new hypotheses, justified and stated clearly. 5. CONCLUSION: Include the implications and applications of the research (it must be clear that they have derived from the results, taking into account their value for the field of study). 6. BIBLIOGRAPHY: The documentation used for the research should be presented according to the Vancouver style and a minimum of 3 references (the most relevant or used) must be quoted. *Example: BIBLIOGRAPHY 1. James Tait Goodrich. Pediatric Neurosurgery. Editorial Thieme, Chapter 45. Pages Khanna P., Thapa M., Iyer R, Prasad S. Neuroradiology. Perioperative Management of Pediatric Patients with Craniosynostosis. Anesthesiology Clin 2007; 25: BEST CLINICAL CASE POSTER CATEGORY CONTENTS Title: It must be clear and attractive, using a simple but correct manner. You must include the name and surname of the authors (max. 2 authors), name and surname of the tutor/s and name of the hospital.
Introduction: The aim is to motivate the reader. It is preferable to highlight the importance of the disease based on the prevalence, severity, difficulty in its diagnosis, forms of presentation, etc. Presentation of the case: This consists of the description of the anamnesis, the physical examination and the diagnostic tests carried out in the clinical evaluation of the patient. The differential diagnosis, the chosen therapeutic option and the evolution of the patient must be described. Patient confidentiality must be respected. If necessary, images, diagrams and algorithms can be included. Discussion and/or conclusion: It is necessary to emphasize why the case is relevant, its scientific interest and its input to medical science. Comments on the resolution of the case reviewing its scientific features, its novelty or how to manage the uncertainty must be included. The comments purpose is to clarify questionable aspects and highlight the message that must remain after reading the poster. This poster must have an educational purpose and reflect the desire to show other fellow students the recommendations for the management of the patient as well as the launching of other research projects. Bibliography: The documentation used for the research must be presented following the Vancouver style. RESEARCH PRESENTATION ORAL PRESENTATION The presentation is strictly limited to a maximum of ten minutes which may be audio- visually supported by a MS PowerPoint file format for PC or similar.
