What you will learn in this lesson IN THIS LESSON, YOU WILL LEARN... About the Orenco AdvanTex alternate technology listing The components that make up the AdvanTex Treatment System How the AdvanTex Treatment System works Where the AdvanTex Treatment System can be used Results of the Technology Verifi cation Program for AdvanTex in Pennsylvania The contact information for the manufacturer UNIT 1-1
Orenco AdvanTex Treatment System Classification Listing In accordance with Title 25, Chapter 73, Section 73.72, DEP classifies the Orenco AdvanTex (AdvanTex) Treatment System for use as an alternate onlot sewage treatment system. This classification permits the use of AdvanTex as a treatment system used for the specific purpose of reducing CBOD 5, TSS and total nitrogen in the sewage effluent prior to discharge. The Orenco AdvanTex listing provides the information that regulates the necessary design requirements, minimum maintenance standards, the permitting requirements, and planning requirements for the alternate technology. An alternate onlot sewage system is a method of demonstrated onlot sewage treatment and disposal that is not defined in the regulations. (Title 25, Section 73.1) Advanced treatment means the system has demonstrated that it can produce an effluent which shall not exceed, 10 mg/l CBOD 5 and 10 mg/l TSS as monthly averages. Go to the PA DEP Website to obtain the Orenco AdvanTex Treatment System Classification Listing UNIT 1-2
Listing Details Technology: Orenco AdvanTex Treatment System Classifi cation Date: 25 August, 2009 Classifi cation Type: Alternate Technology AdvanTex pod with lid open UNIT 1-3
Information and Resources Required for this Training PA Title 25, Chapter 73, Regulations Orenco AdvanTex Classification listing for Pennsylvania AdvanTex Installation Manual Note: The installation video for the AdvanTex system is accessible at The Orenco AdvanTex Installation Manual can be obtained from the Orenco website. ( UNIT 1-4
The Product Orenco s patented AdvanTex Treatment System is a compact and effi cient recirculating packed bed fi lter- a proven, low-maintenance, and highly reliable technology. Unlike sand, peat, or foam fi lters, however, AdvanTex uses a nonwoven textile material for the treatment media. Orenco has been researching and developing the textile treatment process since the mid-1990s. And Orenco has helped to evolve packed bed fi lter technology for the past 30 years. Product Performance and Benefits AdvanTex Textile Treatment Systems produce effl uent that exceeds advanced treatment standards, even under peak fl ow conditions. And because textile can handle much higher loading rates than sand or gravel media, textile fi lters are very compact units. So they require signifi cantly less land area and are easier to install than other packed bed fi lters. And they use very little energy. Technology Verification AdvanTex Treatment Systems have undergone third-party evaluations and have successfully passed ANSI testing protocols. Orenco s AX20N, rated at 500 gpd, successfully passed the NSF/ANSI Standard 40 testing protocol for Class 1 Systems. The AdvanTex System has also undergone multiple third-party fi eld-testing evaluations which demonstrate its ability to perform under real life conditions. More than 20,000 AdvanTex textile fi lters have been installed in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on all sorts of sites: single family homes, commercial properties, community systems, and government-funded and monitored testing sites. UNIT 1-5
Technology Description PARTS OF THE SYSTEM Components of the treatment system: 1- A single, dual-compartment tank or multiple tanks for septic and recirculation processes 2- Pumping and control system 3- Textile fi lter treatment pod 4- Recirculating splitter valve Followed by an absorption area or a spray field UNIT 1-6
Wastewater flows from the house sewer into a dual compartment tank, through an AdvanTex pod, and out to a soil dispersal area. UNIT 1-7
How does the Orenco AdvanTex System work? For a detailed video please visit our website at: or go to Please watch the video How it works UNIT 1-8
What is the AdvanTex Treatment System classified to do? Reduces CBOD 5 to less than 10 mg/l Reduces TSS to less than 10 mg/l Reduces TN to less than 20 mg/l With UV disinfection it reduces fecal coliform to less than 200 CFU/100 ml Screened Effluent AdvanTex Effluent UNIT 1-9
Where can it be used? Prior to discharge to an absorption area or spray field On limiting zones less than 20 inches Any place where a conventional aerobic treatment tank as described in the Pennsylvania Code Title 25, Chapter 73, would be used For enhanced treatment capacity for CBOD and TSS For nitrogen reduction AdvanTex Treatment System installed UNIT 1-10
Orenco AdvanTex Listing II, a. LOCATION: THE ADVANTEX TREATMENT SYSTEM CAN BE USED FOR New Construction Repair Domestic Strength Wastewater Applications Note: Domestic Strength Wastewater does not limit the AdvanTex system to residential applications only AdvanTex Treatment System installed UNIT 1-11
How do you know it will perform? AdvanTex is the only treatment system to successfully complete the DEP Experimental Onlot Wastewater Technology Verifi cation Program (TVP) Field performance for the Orenco AdvanTex Treatment System was evaluated for a period of up to 3 years. This was not just a highly controlled test at a test center where municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent is fed to the treatment system UNIT 1-12
Pennsylvania Testing Program Per the PA TVP, 11 systems were installed and tested at homes in Pennsylvania Monthly samples were taken for BOD 5, TSS, Turbidity, NH 3 -N, TKN, NO 3 -N, NO 2 -N, TN, alkalinity, DO, temperature and ph Sample collection and data reporting were completed under the supervision of NSF Grab samples were taken by commercial laboratories approved by DEP & reported to NSF Samples were taken from... Processing (recirculation) tank AdvanTex filter pod effluent UNIT 1-13
The AdvanTex Performance Results from the PA TVP are as follows: Mean Results CBOD 5 TSS mg/l TN mg/l mg/l Influent Effluent Median Results CBOD 5 TSS TN Influent Effluent UNIT 1-14
Fecal Coliform Results prior to Ultraviolet Light Disinfection FC prior to UV Geometric Median Mean (cfu/100 ml) (cfu/100 ml) Influent 3.7 x x 10 4 Effluent 9.5 x x 10 2 Note: Following UV, the fecal coliform concentration was less than 200 CFU per 100 ml UNIT 1-15
