Data Access Column Width Option for ODBC Data Sources A new configurable MRIMPARM option is now available that allows you to select the precise column width API call MRI utilizes when retrieving data descriptions for columns in ODBC data sources. Oracle 10g BIS level 10.1 now supports Oracle 10g and has been certified with Oracle Subsequent patch sets to the Oracle level also work with BIS level BIS continues to support Oracle 9i and has been certified with Oracle Subsequent patch sets to the Oracle level also work with BIS level MQL Aggregate Functions MQL syntax has been enhanced, allowing you to use the following aggregate functions in a SELECT statement: AVG, MAX, MIN, and SUM. Outer Join Operations MQL syntax has been enhanced, allowing you to execute the following ANSI SQL outer join operations on a three-table join SELECT statement: LEFT OUTER JOIN, RIGHT OUTER JOIN, and FULL OUTER JOIN. You can also use the ANSI SQL join syntax to execute up to five-table joins for INNER JOIN and CROSS JOIN. MQL syntax has also been enhanced to support left, right, and full outer join operations using the classic SQL syntax for two-table outer join operations
Functional Enhancements Audit Enhancements Auditing has been enabled for cabinet 12, drawers E8 and D8. Audit compression for full report writes has been implemented. The size of audit files has increased. The new maximum size for audit files is 16 gigabytes. The AUDIT script has been enhanced to allow the recovery of multiple reports. The new Recover Multiple Reports option allows you to specify an audit media (active audit trail, inactive audit trail, or backup audit file) to recover updates in the specified database cabinet or drawer. See the Administration Help for more information. An automatic audit backup utility has been added to this level. The automatic audit backup allows the administrator to define a directory which keeps a unique backup of the inactive audit trail. The administrator can limit the number of backup files kept in the backup directory. The format of audit files has changed. The audit files are automatically reformatted during the upgrade process to BIS 10.1 and existing audit records are no longer available. Caution It is critical that you completely purge your database before an upgrade. Backing Up the Database The Administration program s Back Up the Database dialog box now allows options for turning off verbose messages and Limited and Summary options for output format. These new options allow for faster backup completion. Data Retrieval (Appload TOC Index) The retrieval process for specific data, like a single report or cabinet, from random locations within the database backup (Purge) files has improved. Now Appload quickly locates the requested data
Internet Commerce Enabler A BIS site can now be disabled and enabled via the Gate Configuration Tool; this makes the maintenance of a BIS site possible without the downing and upping of IIS. Note: An appropriate version of the Sun Java Virtual Machine must be installed prior to use of the Internet Commerce Enabler Gate Configuration Tool. ICE Admin now calls the LIBROWSE library routine to browse workstation files. Universal Naming Convention (UNC) format is now accepted in the Browse dialog box. icedrill now allows a table title to be dynamically determined by the title in the data source report. icedrill now also allows a default presentation for any column data without predefining the table format. However, predefined formats still provide special formats and support hyperlinks. The Component Builder XML Mapping Tool has been enhanced with the following capabilities: The ability to handle a larger set of XML documents that include one or more of the structures many enterprises require for internal or business-to-business processing. Support for XDR schemas to define an XML element tree for mapping. The ability to read in and handle a larger set of Document Type Definitions or schemas by either pruning away unneeded parts of a DTD or schema or extracting one part of a DTD or schema. Improved build and load times. Support for mapping to a set of tables joined by primary and foreign keys. An XML document that uses the new XML Mapping Tool functionality can now be transformed into tables and variables that can be processed by an ICE service. MRI Error Messages MRI now places an event into the Windows Event Log whenever the error handling routine is executed in the MRI process. MRI places the error within Event Viewer s Application Log
New Limits, Reserved Words, Library Routines, and Fields Limits The maximum number of allowable variables has increased from 500 to 999. The maximum amount of allowable variable space has increased from 27,400 bytes to 99,999 bytes. The maximum number of allowable CALL levels has increased from 10 (which includes LNK) to 40 CALL levels at the RUN level and 40 CALL levels at the LNK level. The maximum number of allowable labels has increased to 999. The new combined maximum limit for environmental and global variables is 200. The new combined maximum limit for environmental and global space characters is Reserved Words The following reserved words have been added to this release: FRESTR$ Indicates the amount of remaining variable space at the CALL level. GLBSTR$ Indicates the amount of remaining global variable space. ENVSTR$ Indicates the amount of remaining environmental variable space. MAXGVR$ Indicates the maximum number of global variables. MAXEVR$ Indicates the maximum number of environmental variables. Library Routines The LIB$DIFDATE routine calculates the difference in time between two dates entered as parameter values. The difference is returned in parameters as total days and as years, months, and days. The LIB$DIFDATR routine uses report processing to calculate the difference in time between two dates. The dates are passed in fields of a report. The difference is returned in a third field of the same report. had two new fields added: nertxt and nercod. These new fields return error text and code by the remote site if the connection cannot be (Drawer) had one new field added: vdrw. This new field is a variable to capture the drawer description. JavaScript Reserved Words There are numerous system reserved words that can be referenced by BIS scripts to customize processing within an application. With this feature you now have access to a subset of these reserved words for JavaScript programming via a new BIS Session JavaScript object
RUNERR Variables Increased The global variable requirement for RUNERR has increased by 25 variables and 2000 bytes. The administration configuration default for the value of global run variables (maximum number of bytes) has been increased from 2000 to 5000 bytes, and the maximum number of global run variables has been increased from 70 to 100. Verify Partial Purge Media Security The PURGE script now allows the user to request verification (VPM) of the purge media to be executed after the completion of the partial purge. The verification output is displayed to the user when the partial purge is started in the foreground and sent as a message to the requestor when the partial purge is scheduled or started in the background. BIS-to-BIS and MRI-to-MRI Network Security Security for BIS-to-BIS networking (sign-on credentials only) and MRI-to-MRI networking (sign-on credentials and user data) is now available in the form of encryption. BIS Administrators can now set a minimum security level requirement for each BIS site and each configured connection (BIS Network Configuration Report), which can then be increased by the BIS script writers, when developing BIS applications. BIS script writers are not allowed to lower the minimum security level set by the Administrator. The Administrator setting applies to incoming and outgoing BIS-to-BIS network connections for that site as well as the outgoing MRI-to-MRI networking for that site. However, there is a separate, site-independent setting for all incoming MRI connections. See the MRI Administration and User s Guide and Administration Help for more information. Support for Scrambled Passwords Scrambled passwords are now supported for a primary local language other than English. A database upgrade from a previous BIS release to BIS 10.1 will migrate all scrambled password reports with a value of SP 1 in line zero to a value of SP 2. This feature does not require any manual password changes on either the BIS client or the BIS server. The BIS 10.1 release of the PSWSCR script is the only supported method for scrambling passwords
Performance License Keys There are two release media CD-ROMs for Business Information Server level 10.1: BIS for Microsoft Windows CD-ROM (32-Bit Version) and BIS for Microsoft Windows CD-ROM (64-Bit Version). Each of the CD-ROMs requires a license key for the activation of the Production Edition, Evaluation Edition, and Personal Edition. The license keys for the Production Edition and Personal Edition are entered via a dialog box during installation, validated, and retained in encrypted form in the Windows operating system registry. The license key for the Evaluation Edition is automatically placed in the license edit keys if you choose to check the 90-day evaluation check box. Scaling BIS performance scaling on Intel servers with four or more processors running Microsoft Windows has been improved. Windows EM64T Portation BIS for Windows is now supported on Intel EM64T platforms with Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition
Section 3 Release Deliverables Editions Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows level 10.1 is licensed in three editions: Production Edition Designed to provide full BIS functionality in a production environment with licensing available by named users or by processors for both Microsoft Windows Server bit and 64-bit environments. Personal Edition Designed to provide full BIS functionality for a single user of Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32-bit environment. Evaluation Edition Designed to provide full BIS functionality with a time-limited trial of 90 days for Microsoft Windows Server bit and 64-bit environments and Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32-bit environment. BIS for Windows Upgrades If you purchased a BIS for Windows level 9.1 subscription license you are entitled to a no-charge upgrade to BIS for Windows level 10.1 under the license agreement that applied to your BIS for Windows level 9.1 purchase. If you did not purchase a subscription license, you must either purchase a new license or make all missing subscription payment(s) from the date of the original purchase of BIS level 9.1. BIS for Microsoft Windows Client Upgrades Upgrade styles are available if you have purchased BIS for Microsoft Windows Client level 9.1 (the desktop stand-alone version of BIS). Starting with level 10.1, BIS for Microsoft Windows Client, now called the Personal Edition, has optionally available subscription licenses. If you purchase a subscription license, you are entitled to future releases of the Personal Edition at no cost. Please note that upgrade licenses will not be made available in the future. License Types There are two types of licenses available for BIS for Windows: Named user license Processor license
In previous versions of BIS for Windows, users were defined by the number of concurrent sessions open at any one time. With BIS level 10.1 this method of defining BIS resource access is no longer used. All users are defined as named users. Named users are individuals or devices authorized to use the BIS resources regardless of whether the individual is actively accessing BIS resources at any given time. A device is counted as a named user if the device accesses BIS resources. For example: If one person has three Graphical Interface sessions open, only one named license is required. If ten people are accessing the BIS engine at different times, each person is required to have a license. A processor license is used when the number of named users is undefined or it is more economical to license by processor rather than by named users. Each processor assigned to a server or partition where the BIS server engine is executing must be licensed. With processor licenses, it is not necessary to identify all of the named users. Processors with multicore chips are counted as one processor. Note: For both the named user license and the processor license, there is a physical limit of 1,024 current user sessions that can be attached to the BIS engine. Software Maintenance Software maintenance is optionally available for BIS level This service provides access to telephone support, self-help via the support Web site, fixes, interim corrections, and in-level updates (for example, a no-charge update to level 10.2 if it were offered). This service does not provide for a no-charge upgrade to a major release (for example, level 11.x). For more information see Section 6. Software Subscriptions To complement named user and processor licenses in the budgeting of new releases, software subscriptions are also available. Software subscriptions are annual license fees that provide the right to receive future releases of BIS for Windows at no additional cost. It is important to note that if a software license consists of more than one style, then the corresponding software subscription must be purchased for each software style purchased. Multiple Servers/Partitions If multiple BIS engines are executing on multiple servers or partitions within a server, then each BIS engine must be licensed either by a named user or processor license. Backup BIS Servers BIS level 10.1 may be installed at no cost on a server designated as a backup server for disaster recovery. Reasonable testing on a regular basis is permitted to ensure that failover executes properly. If the BIS installed on the backup server is used for anything other than disaster recovery such as development, testing, or training, then an appropriate BIS license is required

Note: Customers that use the Sun Java VM with Internet Explorer must use version or higher
Workstation To install one of the available Business Information Server client/server interfaces on a workstation, ensure that your workstation is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. To access Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows level 10.1 from a workstation, you need to install both of the following software packages: Graphical Interface for Business Information Server level 5.2, which is included on the BIS for Windows CD-ROM Note: Graphical Interface for Business Information Server levels 4.3 and 5.1 can also be used with BIS for Windows level However, once levels 4.3 and 5.1 reach the end of their support life, you will need to install level 5.2. Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows Personal Edition level 10.1 (separately orderable) Network Requirements Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows requires the following: Network interface for each workstation on the network TCP/IP support on the Windows Server and workstations Note: If you do not have a network card installed, you must change your network configuration settings. Select Network from Control Panel and then select Add Adapter. In the list of adapters, select MS Loopback Adapter and save your change
Section 5 Restrictions, Known Limitations, and Discontinued Features This section describes restrictions and limitations applying to Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows level It presents information under the following categories: Operational restrictions and limitations ODBC server restrictions and limitations Future considerations Discontinued features Operational Restrictions and Limitations Compatibility of Existing COM Components on EM64T It is not possible to load 32-bit in-process components in 64-bit BIS. Windows restricts the loading of 32-bit dlls into 64-bit processes. However, existing 32-bit out-of-process components can be loaded in 64-bit BIS. ICE Examples The service, ASP Example 2: Creating a Cool ICE graph, is not supported on 64-bit BIS. ICE ProcessXML() function The ICE ProcessXML() function is not supported on 64-bit BIS
Oracle Support Oracle has officially dropped support of Oracle 8i. Starting with the BIS 10.1 release, Oracle 8i is no longer supported by BIS. BIS 10.1 has been certified using Oracle 9i Client software to connect to Oracle 9i database servers and using Oracle 10g Client software to connect to Oracle 10g database servers. BIS has not been certified using differing levels for the Oracle Client and the Oracle Server. The Oracle 64-bit ODBC driver returns incorrect information for any numeric column. (This is an Oracle problem that will be fixed when a patch is available for or in the Oracle release.) BIS for Windows Compatibility with Previous Versions A networking issue in versions of BIS 9.1 prior to version 9.1.E8 can affect remote database access through MRI if the database targeted by the operation is hosted on a system with BIS 9.1 installed. This issue appears as a hang condition in a script executed on a BIS 10.1 installation. You must install the BIS 9.1.E8 interim correction on the remote machine to resolve this issue. If BIS level 9.1 and BIS level 10.1 are installed on the same server, an issue might occur with BIS shared memory. To resolve this issue, you must install the BIS 9.1.E8 interim correction before installing BIS 10.1 as a second copy of BIS on the same server. Note: The potential problems with BIS shared memory do not affect an upgrade from BIS 9.1 to BIS 10.1, only a side-by-side installation of BIS 9.1 with BIS Vchar Field The Vchar field specifies the maximum number of variable characters allowed by the script. Set this as low as possible to save memory. The default is 6,616. The maximum is 99,999. The maximum number of variable characters used to include environmental session and global script variables; beginning with level 10.1, these variables are no longer included. Note: The Vchar field is ignored when you execute a JavaScript application or a registered JavaScript subroutine. WebSphere MQ WebSphere MQ must be installed before you can run the Message Queuing feature. Note: WebSphere MQ is not supported on 64-bit platforms
Date/Time If both the exact date and exact time are required in a BIS script, they both must be obtained in a or in a run command. Multiple fields of a date/time reserved word must be loaded with a command. Amount of Server Shared Memory The maximum size of BIS server shared memory available depends on the operating system build and patches installed, as well as on the features of BIS that are in use at your site. On 32-bit Windows operating systems, more than 1500 MB is generally available for use by BIS. However, if you are using the TPMAPPER feature, the amount of BIS server shared memory is limited to 1200 MB. Occasionally, installing Windows security patches has adversely affected the maximum amount of shared memory available. If BIS sites do not start after applying Windows patches, the MapAdmin program should be used to reduce the BIS server shared memory value. In general, a value less than 1000 MB will work regardless of the patches installed. Reducing the BIS server shared memory value might require the BIS sites to be reconfigured to use less shared memory. Generally, the easiest value to reduce is the "Number of Blocks for Caching Results" on the site s Capacity property page. Scripts, Functions, and Statements Be aware of the following restrictions or limitations that apply to scripts, functions, and statements: In MAPPER Query Language (MQL), the maximum number of operands or operators in an arithmetic expression or a WHERE clause cannot exceed 384. Do not use the Command Handler (CHD) statement if you are using a Call subroutine (CALL), a Run Start (RUN), or a Run subroutine (RSR) statement. If you do use the CHD statement, register it in the main script and do not access it in any lower-level routines. Using the CHD statement within subroutines or CALL routines leads to unpredictable results. Storage and Processing Capacity The maximum number of cabinets is increased to 4,000. However, cabinets 3,900 through 4,000 are reserved for future internal Business Information Server development and enhancements. Business Information Server allows up to 1024 simultaneously active reports for each site. This includes active reports for any user or software process (such as MAPQUE, DISPATCHER, APPLOAD, and PURGE) attached to that site. An active report is any report that is on display, being executed, or in use by a manual function or a statement, such as Search or SRH
ODBC Server Restrictions and Limitations Be aware of the following considerations and limitations of the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) server feature: Only one ODBC server is supported. If the Business Information Server for Microsoft Windows and Internet Commerce Enabler both are installed on the same system, the ODBC server is installed and associated with the first installation. If another copy of Business Information Server is installed as a separate Business Information Server installation, the ODBC server feature works with the first Business Information Server installation only. If you wish to install a newer version of Business Information Server and use ODBC with that version, you must perform an upgrade process on the first Business Information Server or remove it and install the later version of Business Information Server. The ODBC client driver only works in Microsoft Windows 32-bit environments. Therefore, programs that access the BIS ODBC Server cannot run on Microsoft Windows 64-bit servers. With Microsoft Access, you can use design view to design select queries. However, you need to use SQL-specific pass-through to design, insert, delete, and update queries. The Table Description and Column Comments fields in the OTBL script are not passed back to the Microsoft Access ODBC client application. Therefore, you cannot observe these entries on the Table Properties and Field Description tabs in Microsoft Access. You must restart Microsoft Query before you can view table data sets defined with the OTBL script. Future Considerations In BIS level 10.1 the RUNERR subroutine was updated by merging report 8E0 functionality into report 2E0. Report 8E0 is now obsolete and will be discontinued in a future level. See the Command Reference for more information. The Script Editor is included in BIS level However, it was not updated or enhanced, and it will not be included in the next BIS release. Discontinued Features The following scripts are no longer supported: BSRH COP RPW
